BIM Pepple has revealed his desire to make Canada’s 2026 World Cup squad was a factor in his departure from Southend United.
Pepple scored 11 goals in 23 games while with the Shrimpers on loan from Luton Town.
But the 22-year-old will now spend the second half of the season playing in League Two after being recalled by the Hatters last week.
And Pepple is eager to play higher as he strives to secure international recognition.
“With the World Cup coming up in 2026, Canada are hosting and it’s a goal of mine to be on that plane,” said Pepple.
“I know what kind of level I need to be playing at to make it a possibility.
“The chance to move up with the World Cup coming up was hard to turn down but it was a very, very tough decision and I’ll always be thankful to everyone at the club.”
Pepple was selected in Canada’s under 17 squad during his youth but has yet to make his senior debut.
The striker had found first team appearances hard to come by before joining Blues in late August and relished playing regularly at Roots Hall.
“I was craving that chance to get regular football and really show what I can do,” said Pepple.
“There was definitely a lot the gaffer, the whole staff and team-mates taught me as well.
“They would give me pointers, we’d sit down and look at the videos too and it’s something I’ll never forget.
“It really did help me and I’m so grateful for the opportunity.
“When I came in I didn’t have a big reputation so to be trusted like that was amazing.”
And that led to what the striker has described as his most enjoyable spell of his career so far.
“It’s the most fun I’ve had playing football and it was amazing,” said Pepple.
“I started off a bit slow and I didn’t score for a couple of games but as soon as the goal at Solihull went in it just took off.
“I felt the love and it was amazing.”
Pepple’s form and goals made him a firm favourite with the Shrimpers fans.
And the forward relished the support coming his way.
“The fans were some of the best I’ve ever experienced and were brilliant,” said Pepple.
“My parents came to the Ebbsfleet game on Boxing Day and were stunned with the fans and the atmosphere.
“I felt the love during my whole time here and I’m going to miss it.
“It’s making it really sad to leave.”
Chesterfield are now rumoured to be Pepple’s next club.
But the striker was not solely responsible for his Roots Hall exit.
“It wasn’t fully my decision but obviously I had a bit of a say,” said Pepple.
“It wasn’t all in my control, there were a couple of clubs and I had to speak with Luton as well.
“It was definitely very, very tough with how much I loved it at Southend.
“It just had to be done but it’s very sad and bitter-sweet.”
However, Pepple stressed he will continue to keep an eye on what is happening with Blues.
“I told my team-mates it’s not goodbye because they’ll definitely be seeing me around,” said Pepple.
“I don’t think I’m going to be too far away so hopefully I can get down to some games.
“I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on all the scores.”
Pepple’s contract with Luton expires in the summer, although the Championship club do still have the option of a further year.
And when asked about the chance of a return to Roots Hall, Pepple added: “You never know what can happen in football.
“I’m not going to make any promises but I will certainly not rule anything out either.
“I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.”
