I knew we’d missed a few penalties recently but didn’t realise it was that bad. Missing 4 out of the last 6 and 6 out of the last 10 is ridiculous.

Having Hyde, Cardwell, or Murphy on penalties would improve the conversion rate. But unfortunately that’s not going to happen for at least 6-8 weeks.

So the question is who takes them in the meantime? Standout options for me are:

Ralph: Captain and one of our most composed players on the ball. Would be confident if he stepped up to take one.

Kensdale: Centre backs always seem to take good penalties when they have to in shootouts (Barrett and Bolger at Wembley prime example), and Kensdale is our best centre back on the ball. Worth a go?

Wreh: Good goalscoring record at Banbury which presumably included some penalties. So why was he not taking tonight?

So, overall in the last decade, including shoot-outs, we’ve taken 97 penalties, scoring 66 (just over two-thirds) with 31 unsuccessful.

Of the regular penalty-takers (8+ penalties) in that time, Demetriou’s 9/11 is by far the best success-rate. Cox scored 5/8 and Corr 6/10.

Powell was obviously the designated pen taker.
It wasn't a great pen, it wasn't a shocker either, gk went right way.
It wasn't a powerful strike for sure and I am hopeful that Callum will not dwell too much on it, and being the type he is will work and work some more on it and step forward for the next........and score.

Maybe he's been smashing them in in training.

The ability to perform in practice vs the ability to perform on the grand stage is what sets people apart.

Jury is out on powell, but my hope is once he gets a few goals under his belt he will go from strength to strength.

He also scored in shoot-outs against Leyton Orient and Macclesfield in the preceding two seasons, so his overall record with us was 6 from 6.

I would actually because he was a pure striker of the ball.

Oh it was more that he wouldn’t have come to mind as one of the best pure strikers of a ball - you don’t tend to think of fullbacks plus he’s barely in the last decade.

I had confidence in his penalties in a way I most certainly don’t for Callum Powell. I’m ashamed to say my heart sunk when they said on the radio he had the ball in his hands. I’m not sure I’ve been so resigned to a miss since Broughton stepped up v Bristol Rovers.
