Outdoor smoking

Or TV, films, cartoons, magazines, music, school, friends. Smoking is everywhere, the only way to stop your lad seeing it, would be to ban it completely, worldwide. Which of course, will never happen, simply because the revenue it generates is astronomical.

And also, sticking with the topic in hand, I can't comment on yourself personally, but I'd wager that more kids pick up smoking from the above factors, than from seeing people smoking in a beer garden.

I'd even say if you made a list, for the most influential, to least influential factors that encourage young people to smoke, seeing someone Smoke in a beer garden, wouldn't rank too highly.

He's 6 years old. He didn't get it from any of those. He got it from random people in the street. The point I was making was to point out MK S was wrong, my son didn't get it from his parents. Thank you for helping prove my point.

I think you need to read the reasoning behind this. It has very little to do with health. The reasoning is to stop kids seeing smoking as something "normal". If my son is anything to go by then they have a point. He sees people in the street smoking and asks questions. He doesn't realise it isn't "normal".

You'd be surprised, smoking still goes on in several of the popular soap operas, it gets seen. Also, at school, do they use newspapers to cover tables when painting or doing other craft activities? Do you have newspapers or magazines laying around at home? Amazing how many pictures in press and publications still have photos of people smoking. Only needs to see one of his friends "pretending" and suddenly it's a cool thing to do.

Err, remove what? Smoking all together?

See, I don't wanna sound rude mate, but if it's a regular occurrence, and there's nothing you can do to stop it, why do you persist with the same place? In a fair world, I'd agree with you, half & half, designated smoking zones, fine. There's no problem. The business is still catering for those who do & do not smoke. Everyone wins.

As I've said, I class myself as a courteous smoker, who wouldn't inflict my bad habit on someone, who clearly didn't want to be around it. But there will always be a non-smoking crusader, who'll want to moan at you, whinge, chastise or preach to you. I've had it myself, where I've been in the open air, being as courteous as possible, and random strangers have had a moan. Sometimes, you can't win, Whether you're a smoker or non-smoker.

Ok, in order:
The nosmo brigade want smoking gone completely and the pubs are the first target.

You're not being rude, by the way. I like the café, the people that run it and their coffee. I used to use it when I smoked so why should I not use it now?

I don't get the ache with smokers there, but a few have the **** you attitude so half and half would be good.

The non smoking crusaders get on my man boobs

He has never watched anything that isn't childrens' TV, or a DVD. He's never seen someone on TV smoking. Don't also forget that cigarette advertising is banned, so no, he doesn't see it at school. Moreover I've never seen any newspapers in my kids' school.

We don't buy newspapers at home, and the only magazine I read is Pilot, and I can assure you that in the time I have subscribed I've never seen a cigarette advert. My wife reads Frontline (the magazine of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists) which unsurprisingly also never advertises cigarettes.

Quite frankly that is a very weak argument, and only proves my point further.

With all due respect, you can't possibly know that unless you are with him every moment of every day! Even if he hasn't, anyone else he socialises with could have.

I know that. Believe me. We know what he watches at home, and he never watches TV at friends' houses because he's too busy playing games and being in the garden. If he's not doing those then he's on a Win or something similar.

Trust me. I know what my kids do. That may change when they grow up, but at the moment it is true.

Well, if you are that sure, then you're lucky. I wouldn't have been so sure when my kids were that age.

That may well change, especially as we've just moved his bedtime from 7.30 to 8.00. However, he still has to go up 15 minutes early (ie 7.45) to read to me for 15 mins.

Aren't you a bit too old for a bedtime story LB?

With all due respect, that's just YOUR child. That doesn't mean all children are the same. Kids are exposed to all kinds of things, which parents have little, or no control of.

Lets stick on point though, have you ever taken your kid(s) to a pub & sat in a beer garden? And if so, do you blame this factor, for his intrigue towards cigarettes?

Ok, in order:
The nosmo brigade want smoking gone completely and the pubs are the first target.

Ahh I see. Yes totally agree, pubs are probably the easiest target, because of the ideology that a beer & a fag, go hand in hand.

You're not being rude, by the way. I like the café, the people that run it and their coffee. I used to use it when I smoked so why should I not use it now?

Totally fair again, and I make you right.

I don't get the ache with smokers there, but a few have the **** you attitude so half and half would be good.

It'll always be the same I think. Both sides have reasonable, considerate people (as witnessed in this thread by ex/non-smokers) and both will have the arseholes, who'll intentionally try to irritate people.

What I will reiterate though, if you're going into a place where smoking is the norm and is accepted, such as a beer garden, I don't think anyone's got the right to moan about their kids witnessing it. I realise no-one has so far, I just referring to the report which is the whole basis of this discussion.

I find te use of ones children to get smoking outside banned a tad hypocritical.

In the instances where health is cited, I assume that the health of the child was so important that they were never wheeled down the street in something which put their breathing apparatus at vehicle exhaust height

As for encouraging children to smoke, Alcohol is on parallel , health and revenue generation wise, and has a far greater effect on others, yet kids are taken to pubs, drink is indoors, alcohol advertising is allowed...

I am not saying that Alcohol should be banned, but lets have some parity here (some other drugs may fall into this too) , the choice to partake is yours , you considerably benefit from the tax revenue , either campaign about them all or not at all.

Yes I am a smoker, but I don't drink.....

The thing about smoking is that it's incredibly addictive and difficult to stop. Yes, I know you can say that about alcohol, but I don't necessarily think it's that instant.

I really despair sometimes.

Why cannot smokers(I smoke)be treated as adults.

Pub owner has the simple choice of his/hers pub smoking or non smoking,if smoking then all bar staff are smokers, anyone entering into this nasty den understand it will be smoke filled, non smokers enter at their own risk.Simples.

Hmm..smoking. Set fire to dead vegetables, inhale the fumes and pay tax to do so.

Why not just make a bonfire and breathe the smoke?
