And if you think things are bad at Roots Hall, then perhaps a visit to places like Hull, Huddersfield and Leeds is required! :nope: You can't hear yourself think at times - let alone build some pre-match atmosphere.

Which begs the question - Why, oh why, do we need a ground announcer?

I would rather have the fans singing before the match kicks off to create atmosphere - rather than being forced to listen to music I've never heard before and then being patronised by some twit saying "get behind your team" - what does he think we are there for?

A return to how it was in the 70's with the odd Slade and Wizard 45 being played would suit me fine ........... and the fans did the rest on their own .............

I agree , this thread is just negative for the sake of it.
This is a guy doing the best he can.
He doesn't have the most original lines or ease with the microphone, but we've not come to watch Sir Ian McKellen at the National Theatre.
In fact this thread just shows up the worst about some of clubs supporters - negative and quick to jump on the bandwagon.
I'd like some of those critics to have a go and see how well they can do.
Great in your heads no doubt , but imagine the mouth might get a little dry at 2:30 on a Saturday......

Fully agree. There's not that much wrong with the announcer that couldn't be put right with a bit of coaching (within the limits of how far FL regs will allow) and adopting what constructive, as opposed to destructive, confidence-sapping, criticism, there is in this thread.

On reflection yes my origional post was more damning then constructive - I still think though it would be suited to somebody else

Micky G does a good job IMO.

And anyone who was at Roots Hall on 2nd Jan 2012 must admit that pre match and half time music definitely adds something.

Very harsh thread, yes I know him and yes he does support Southend.

He's a top man trying to do a decent job with poor tools, he always comes across clear and says what he can, he doesn't get anywhere near a good wage for this either I might add!!

I guess we must be doing well on the pitch if people have to moan about the off-field staff lol

I'm not having a moan about the Roots Hall announcer in particular :nope: .......... I'm having a moan about the whole bloody lot of them  and I ask again, why do we need all this "rubbish" (for that is what I call it) that they come out with - I know who our team is (but the away fans may not) and I just want to hear who is playing for the opposition ........... and even then I can't always understand what is being said ......... so let's get rid.

......... the sooner we have a ground with a big screen to provide this information, the sooner we can do away with the racket and noise from an announcer that only gets in the way of my friends and me talking about the game or trying to shout in support of the team.

Pleased to hear the announcer is a Southend supporter (I never thought otherwise) and I am sure he would be better employed taking up a seat and joining in with the other fans roaring on their team.

This is the problem though why are we paying somebody when I would do it for FREE!

I have been to many many other football stadiums and ours is very poor compared to other announcers not all but most.

I have spoken to Micky before and hes a decent bloke but for me the announcers role is one of trying to gee up the crowd where possible

I think we should have an announcer in the mode of good old Frank Gill, he didn't need to be on the pitch, and given the usual communications gremlins that we still have 30 years or more on his announcements were always clear.

Fair enough in those days all he had to do was announce the crowd changes to the teams.

I was the match day announcer in 1982/3 and can attest to the problems that we had in those days with the PA system! Still I enjoyed doing it and would certainly consider doing it again! 30 odd years of radio presenting and djing....not scared of a microphone or making the odd faux pas either!

I guess it was lost in the air of despondency following the Swindon game, but I'd just like to give full credit for the announcer taking account of some of the constructive criticism on this thread e.g. calling out 'your team the Superblues' at the start. Interesting to see whether he takes on board the other comments that normally only apply to Saturday games such as half-time scorelines.

Yep full credit Micky G
