I think the FL try to encourage impartiality from the announcer, I seem to recall one of the previous announcers having to stop his "come on you Blues" when he announced the crowd with 10 minutes to go

He must have learnt his trade up the A12 at our 'friends', I believe they announce their crowd to the players before the game... :hilarious:

After Elizabeth the queen mother died there was a minutes silence at the next game. Our hero announced it as a minutes silence for the death of queen Elizabeth the first

Don't remember it myself but from what I've seen of him at work, he reads a lot of stuff off a script anyway so maybe it wasn't a **** up by him, although maybe he should have questioned it. Just couldn't see what Barna was referring to in that wiki link.

I think its an age thing .. my dad was always Southend/Tottenham as we had so many games on a Friday night he had ample opportunity to go up to London on a Saturday

In the early 70's most of the North Bank also supported Chelsea, West Ham and Spurs, and as we played most home games on a friday night, loads of us used to go to a game in london the following day. Imagine the cost of doing that today?. Back then it was around 30 -50 pence admission price to stand up at 1st division london grounds. Also bunking the train fares was easy, and if you used the underground from Stratford or Barking, you could get to central london for 20 pence. Sounds ridiculous, but it's true.

Couldn't agree more. Think the Matchday Announcer is the poorest we have had. He is so corny. Agree wholeheartedly with the comments about the half time scores. By the time you have worked out who was playing who then he is on to the next division !! As for asking the kids what the full time score is going to be. I am waiting for the first one to say we are going to lose. Time for a change I think and quick.

Bloody hell Barna, care to say where in that lot?!

Come again?(I thought I explained it clearly enough).

Jeff Allen was under the impression that the Queen Mother was Elizabeth the first(presumably on the basis that the present Queen is Liz the second).Obviously he missed the classes on Francis Drake,Shakespeare,The Armada and all that historical stuff at school.

Come again?(I thought I explained it clearly enough).
You said it made Private Eye and then gave a link to a Wiki page on Elizabeth I, thought it was going to refer to the incident somewhere within that page?

I said the gaffe made Private Eye,which had been previously explained(by Firestorm) earlier on the thread.Sometimes in life you need to scroll back to get the full picture you know.:winking:(I thought you lot were supposed to be good at multi-tasking)?

I knew what Firestorm had said just expected a link to Private Eye, instead of which I read a load of stuff about Elizabeth I that I already knew! Not sure what multi-tasking has to do with it either.....I think we're on totally different wavelengths here!

:off topic:Although Private Eye is online these days I'm not sure they archive their stuff.
Even if they do, I doubt if it goes back to the era when Jeff Allen was our matchday announcer.(Just checked and it's not in the PE archive).
I still get my fortnightly fix from the print edition, btw, which is where I first saw the story.

We all have "second" teams, however Mick is a long standing supporter of SUFC, I remember him from the old "away club" weekend trip to Plymouth in February 1974 when he shared the room I was in, as well as many other trips when the "away" support was about 30 each match. Perhaps you should go to Fulham as listen to Diddy David Hamiltion asking the supporters to welcome chairman "Mo" as he enters the ground!

I don't!

yes, Southend reserves!

A nasty thread slagging off a person doing his bit for the club.
We are all entitled to opinions but this for me appears nasty.
People these days are often too ready to post negative remarks.

I agree , this thread is just negative for the sake of it.
This is a guy doing the best he can.
He doesn't have the most original lines or ease with the microphone, but we've not come to watch Sir Ian McKellen at the National Theatre.
In fact this thread just shows up the worst about some of clubs supporters - negative and quick to jump on the bandwagon.
I'd like some of those critics to have a go and see how well they can do.
Great in your heads no doubt , but imagine the mouth might get a little dry at 2:30 on a Saturday......

For me the best we have had was Brian the Wet Sham chap who left to live in Cyprus. Forgave him for being a Hammer and ShrimperZone bought him a SUFC jacket to wear on matchday so he didn't have to wear his claret and blue tank top.

Good bloke.

Brian Wheeler you mean Macca. I maintain the marketing side of things has never been the same since he left.
