Post-Match Thread and Ratings Oldham FC 3-2 Southend Utd

Finally calmed down. Disappointed is an understatement. Though the game perfectly reflected our season; despite being the better team on the day the game was lost by defensive errors and our strikers falling on their asses whilst trying to take a shot.

Ref seemed distracted and missed fouls both ways and called others that weren't, again both ways.

"We go again." Full pre-season, ability to go after their actual targets and no near certain peril hanging over their heads. No excuses left

Yeah, I’m bored ****less with non-league football and the ****ers who keep making excuses for our lack of progress. Tifos are prawn sandwich ooh I love to watch continental football bollocks.
It was a gesture paid for predominantly by the fans, signifying what we have been through to get to where we are today, clearly completely lost on you. We are all bored with non league, but given where we were just pleased to have our football club. I want to be out of this tin pot league as much as all of us, but show some respect please.

Respect for what? Failure?

I just spent about 72 hours and a couple of thousand dollars to try and get from Eugene Oregon to Wembley and thanks to a bunch of useless ****ers at Portland airport I got as far as Iceland. Never mind, I have my phone, I can still watch the game. I can watch us throw it away and stay another year in non-league football and then be told I should be proud and happy and well done Oldham. **** Oldham and **** feeling happy. A few ****ty cards in our end doesn’t change that.

Another point I’ve pondered on throughout this second half of the season at various times, Nick Hayes isn’t good enough. Responsible for roles in goals against Rochdale and FGR which in the end didn’t affect the outcome but there’s a reason Barnet dropped him mid season for a new GK when they were in a title challenge…
Yeah he ain’t good enough. Better off with Colin.

Haven’t read the thread, so apologies if cover things that have been done already.

Ref was awful. And I mean ****ing awful. He didn’t give any 50:50 our way, which completely stunted us, especially moving forward. May as have well thrown on a blue shirt. No idea why he run off at the end? Did he have to add another hour to his parking? ****.

Not sure on some of these players. No point in digging them out, but Kev knows what he needs.

This little run has earned us close to half a mill. That’ll do. Now we need to recruit a proper striker:

Fans / as always, best in the league

I really don’t understand the digs at the ref today. I thought he let a lot go, maybe a bit too lenient at times. Could’ve easily seen two red cards (Miley & one of theirs later on).

None of his decisions led to a goal or was the talking point of the match.

If he was a really terrible ref, he would’ve given the Fondop penalty in the first half.

On reflection...
I thought we played well in patches
A good line after a defeat like this... It's too early for this team to go up.
We showed we have some good players and can play good football by getting to this final.
We have to be in the promotion mix next season.
Maher did well I think and was one of the better games I've seen u splay.
We were fit, well structured and attacked at times.
We scored 2 goals but have to be able to win in 90.
Too many draws this season or silly losses.
Final jigsaw piece needs to be added whatever that is - consistency in attack, better players etc

Negatives
We play some nice football around the channels but don't have the attacking width quality
Our forwards really are powder puff
We lack a quick ball and speed up front to make a difference
Too much aimless hoofing at times

Positives
Controlled the game at times - towards the end of the first half and in extra time until....
Had some really good passing moves including the goal in extra time

Ratings from a dazn view...

Hayes - 7 - mostly played well. Kicked well, punched when needed and saved at least 3 goals. Don't think he could have done anything more in that game. The third goal was just one of those moments.

Taylor - 8 - absolutely brilliant other than that incredibly rash tackle which should have been a penalty. Skill, control, defensive masterclass other than that.

Goodlife - 6 - played ok. Just not smart enough on occasion against fondup and especially on such a big pitch. Was caught for speed a few times and tired aignificantly. Some great pressure at the other end and could have scored 1-2 on another day

Ralph - 7 - played well without being outstanding. Did everything be had to although I thought he could have covered better for goodlife for their second goal

Husin - 7 - commentators loved him and was an option for their mom. I thought he played the defensive mid role well. His job was to break up the game and tackle back which he did.

Miley - 6 - didn't really do much in the game and nearly got an early red card. Not sure what he and husin offer when playing together other than more defensive cover

Appiah-forson - 9 - was everywhere all the time he played even when he had cramp. Love this guy. My mom. Just covered so much ground in defence and in attack always seemed to find space in the wide right channel. The move and ball for our second was awesome

Bridge - 6 - I now think everyone is right. His day has come and gone albeit he worked really hard for the team. Can't really get past the defender and constantly checks inside. Still a good passer of the ball with some neat dunks but not as impactful.

Gus - 8 - was also everywhere front and back and played well. Some of his passing was a little off but just gets into some great positions.

Hopper - 5 - didn't see him at all and got booked. I know he plays a role in attack and defence but his job is to score and never looked like doing so at all.

Kendall - 6 - didn't score the goal but put the defender under enough pressure and that was pretty much it.

Subs

Parillion - 8 - scored and did so through smart movement and awareness. Love this guy. Lots of energy, skill passing ability. Will just get better.

Walker - 7 - thought he played well when he came on. Ran and harried their defence well and showed some great skill and touch. Should have scored when he made that chance for himself with some lovely skill again.

Bonne - 6 - it's been mentioned a few times. Not really a good striker. How he scores so many before is a mystery. Put himself about a bit but nothing in terms of real chance creation or real goal scoring contribution.

Coker - 6 - he was ok but as usual nothing special. Not really any shots on goal or creative attacking play.

Other not long enough to rate

To next season...

Can't believe that when I was clapping our players off of the pitch someone pinched my match programme from under my seat. Talk about 2 upsets in one day. I hope our fan whoever pinched it goes to sleep tonight and never wakes up. My mate got 2 for his sons so he gave me one of his. Your a top bloke Lee. Who steels from there own? COYBs
You can have mine if you like Blue Blood. Im try to off load a lot of mine and will only end up in the loft in a box.

Do you really believe that a Manager of any Football club changes his tactics etc because he gets booed 🥸
Of course I don't believe that but surely after a defeat KM logs into SZ to find out where he went wrong and ponder over the helpful advice available from the knowledgeable posters. Once he has digested all that he can then turn his attention to tactics and team selection for the next match.

It was a game we could well have won but lost but then Rochdale was a game we should have lost but won and Forest Green was a game we could have lost in both real time and penalties and yet won.
Being a play off game with a glittering prize for the winner makes yesterday's result very hard to bear but in truth it was a typical winner takes all final type of game. It featured chances missed and taken as well as penalties given and not given and many decisive moments decided by the smallest of margins. We turned up and the players put in a shift but just lost. That's just competitive football. All of this was all in front of 52000 people at one of the most iconic venues in world football. That we there at all was a decent achievement in my book but perhaps I am too easily pleased.

I know it is a pointless thought but I could not help but wonder what would have happened had the take over been completed two months earlier, say in May last year. For sure our team would have looked completely different but would they have made Wembley or done even better? As I said a pointless thought but it keeps returing

Yesterday's team was the one that made the late run and saw us unexpectedly finish in seventh place but it only came into existence on January the 29tth when LCP joined us following the recruitment of Goodliffe and Hopper earlier in the week. We did not immediately gel but went on to produe a string of results at the end of the season and play offs which suggested they were a real force. Defeating both Rochdale and Forest Green (albeit on penalties) were serious results. Are we really that good or did we just over perform over a short period?

If, as I believe, we are good we then have much to look forward to as there is potential for improvement among this set of players, both as a team and individuals. Never mind Carlisle, York, Barnet or Forest Green all we need is some shrewd close season recruitment to make us a at least equal to anyone. No opponents will look forward to playing us (especially at Roots Hall) although having said that the National League will remain a brutal competition and hard to escape from.

I cannot sign off without expressing my support and admiration for the 30,000 or so Shrimpers who made the trip yesterday. It was an amazing turn out and I salute you all.

Last but not least my thanks and appreciation for the efforts of the manager and coaching staff. My admiration for you all remains unstinted. Despite the early season chaos made worse by the departures of Cardwell and Kensdale and subsequent difficulties before Christmas in not being able to sign any players let alone the ones we might have wanted to you guys came close to overseeing one the greatest miracles the history of English football. 'Nuff said.

Someone remind me of when exactly was the last time we entered the close season with the ability to sign players. I am looking forward to that as I am looking forward to next season.

Up the Blues

Got back to Cornwall at 11.45pm yesterday evening. Bloody knackered.
I think we will mostly agree that the team will need strengthening next season if we want to take promotion seriously.
I’m not going to slate anyone after yesterday’s performance, I thought generally we give it a good go and we had long periods of possession.
Oldham were a big side and we often got bullied too much. Wouldn’t say they were a dirty side but more than capable of putting it about.
I was proud of how the team played yesterday. To get to Wembley was a major achievement .
Just loved the atmosphere and we mostly out sang the Oldham supporters.
It was a brilliant moment when the league officials were introduced and they were booed by both sets of supporters.

Yeah, sure. A proper football club would be in the football league. We need to straighten out our priorities
The definition of "proper" varies. For me it includes paying our bills, paying our players, rebuilding the relationship with the fans, regaining respect in the local community, regaining respect from the football community from a doing business perspective and getting back into the EFL.
