Post-Match Thread and Ratings Oldham FC 3-2 Southend Utd

Couldn't be prouder of the team and the club. It was a painful way to lose, after bossing most of the game, but our season's success cant be defined by 2 minute lapse in concentration! Oldham, to their credit, are free scoring and they took those chances!

When you think that in June last year there was s good chance our club would have been gone, and a year later we are part of a record breaking crowd and a fantastic advert for the 5th tier, you cant help but be proud of the players, Kev and the coaching staff, the backroom teams and of course COSU ! And what a turnout at Wembley!!

We missed out on promotion today, in the most painful way, but we will come back stronger and with a full pre-season and a couple of signings i am confident that we will be up there again.

And for the record, I thought Taylor was man of the match today.
Well said, and I agree with your MOM.

I only have one comment at moment and that is how surprised I am to see people saying Walker was crap when he came on. I thought he was immense, and never seen him put such a shift in. He kept the ball up top and just ran out of puff for his Sitter… he made a massive difference but I understand that doesn’t fit agendas
I like Walker a lot. Get him firing and he’ll transform like Kendall.

Re the ref, I'm not sure constitutes a foul anymore these days. I felt that Hopper was man handled near enough every time he went up for an aerial challenge.
Plenty of the neutrals in the pub where I was watching felt the same.
One time he nearly had his head ripped off. The ref gave nothing. Fondup won nearly every header against us. We didn’t have the nous to nearly rip his head off. The ref was one of the ones who didn’t see anything above waist height as a foul. Probably why he gave quite a few fouls against Keenan.

Hello

Oldham fan in peace.

Have enjoyed posting and reading this forum over the last few weeks.

A few points.

Your fan base is amazing. I know we always have good support, but today to see 2 huge, noisy and passionate supporters packing a Wembley made it a real occasion.

As for the game…..I have never been as mentally exhausted after a game of football ever. My heart rate was at 136 bpm in the last 5 minutes.

Also before the game I said that it was close to call, but felt that if we played to our best we would win. I think we didn’t play as well as I’d hoped - but that was more due to how you played I think, and you nullified the threat that we’d used so well in the previous 2 games.

The first goal knocked us - and I didn’t feel in the game for next 20 minutes, but then we didn’t play get more control and as stated we missed some good opportunities (and how Fondop missed that one near the end of the half I will never know).

Second half we got the penalty and I thought that would spur us on, but from our POV it felt like you were the better team for the rest of the half - even though we did have two good opportunities to score.

The early goal in ET seemed to floor us…team looked out of gas, our supporters were deflated and flat. Couldn’t see how we would get back in the game….and then 2 minutes of football that was out of the blue changed everything.

We are delighted to have won it, but I cannot hand on heart say it was well deserved. It was a close, tight game, and probably a draw and the penalty lottery would have been a fair outcome.

However after 34 years of waiting, I will be selfish and say I don’t care, and the memory of today - sharing it with my wife, my 7yo son and 80 year old Dad will be cherished forever.

The posts on here have been heartfelt, honest, and generous to Oldham - and I genuinely wish you success next season. There is not another team in the NL that deserves promotion more next season.

I will leave you to your angst and disappointment.

Yours in sport
An honest and real report

Oldham looked like a team/squad that had the kitchen sink thrown at it to get promotion.
They had superior players and had recruited the manager who has done this multiple times.
We are in year 1 of a rebuild after being reduced to a pile of rubble of a club.
This play off run has been wonderful and that night at FGR will be hard to match let alone the Rochdale scenes.
Can't wait for next season...and its been a while since I've said that lol.

Our journey from almost total destruction to today has taken 3 years.

We do have a squad and manager that has been assembled to achieve the goal we did today…but it took time, and if we are honest, we finished 5th and have then won a cup competition….not done a Barnet, Chesterfield etc.

There would have been a very different view on our forum if you had seen the game out. For the amount of money we spent, to be as far off the top of the table was a disappointing season.

The rot that bad owners create takes time to completely change….your support will create an income/budget level that means you will be competitive.

Over time (hopefully not long) it will come good.

It`s a forum, and certainly not yours alone? If you don`t like certain posts or posters scroll on. Any form of negativity on here gets slammed. We all have different views, and that`s what makes it balanced. But, please stop trying to be the voice of reason all the time.
Nothing to do with trying to be a voice of reason. I welcome genuine, well thought-out opinions.

But "Maher Out" trolls gleefully hopping straight on here minutes after the match has finished to say "I told you so" and to try to wind people up?

Nah.

Just watched the highlights. It was never a pen, bodies falling over everywhere. How tge ref worked out it was a pen no idea. Appiah forsons was more of a pen as there was contact. Didn't realise how much of a chance walker's miss was, could have placed it to the left of the keeper. On another day, we'd be playing in the efl.

Obviously any time your team loses at Wembley it’s a massive disappointment. We were 20 minutes away but it wasn’t our day. I’m not gutted and genuinely happy for Oldham fans who have gone through incredibly similar turmoil due to gross mismanagement over a number of years and they’re back where they belong in the football league. I’m proud of my club to have been there today. The same club that was fighting bailiffs away 18 months ago. The same club that had no hot water for months. The same club who’s most frequent fixture was HMRC (A)

I think when we all sober up and see it a bit clearer we will agree that less than a year under the new ownership to have got to Wembley, we’re possibly a little ahead of schedule.

I think the most important take home from today is we WILL live to fight another day and I haven’t said that with a whole load of confidence before 🦐🦐🦐

Well that was gut wrenching. Hard to take. When 2-1 up, we only had to game manage by keeping the ball between the backs and midfield, and waste every second possible. Instead we pumped it up to them and gave them the ball back when they were at their most dangerous attacking wise. Yes I agree Hayes made the wrong decision and was stranded for the equaliser in extra time, but we shouldn't have gave them the ball back in the first place. The winning goal is one of the most perfect flukes you will ever see. The ref, Jeez, he was very reluctant to give us free kicks. He let nearly all of their shirt pulling and wrestling go. Aside from that we should have seen the game out and won, but in my opinion, Oldham were the better attacking side.
