Post-Match Thread and Ratings Oldham FC 3-2 Southend Utd

As you are allowed to be happy, I'm allowed not to be.

Things won't change while we accept players not performing in their actual positions.

While when chasing the game for a goal we take off the most dynamic midfielder I've seen in a Southend shirt for a while.

In the last 5 minutes 5 crosses by the same player didn't beat the first man.

Players love a bit bit of hyping up the crowd but will do something in-between a speed walk and very gentle jog when getting back into position.

Too many flatter to deceive.

Yes. Unthinkable we'd get all the way to the final.

Sadly not unthinkable that we'd **** it up.
Is there any treatment for single figure IQs?

Feel so flat today, can't fault the players but on reflection was probably one ET too many, Oldham was probably the better side but 3 disappointing goals to concede on our behalf, walkers chance to make it 3-1 on reflection was huge and would of put the game to bed. But a very enjoyable day, which I never expected to have

Apologies if this has already been covered, I haven’t had a chance to read all the posts on here but has anyone seen our penalty shout on Appiah-Forson? In the second half of normal time. From the angle we was in the crowd it looked a definite penalty! And I make that a penalty we should have been awarded in each of the playoff games.

Immaterial now I know but just wondered other people’s perspectives on it. Was it a penalty?
Dunno, but my friends were watching on DAZN, and it seems the very biased Oldham commentators were saying no, he dived, but the footage clearly showed contact! they said it looked more a penalty than theirs, I cant comment, because the other end of the pitch was a long way away!

Not the result we all wanted but what a day. So proud of this team. Not a day for recriminations but a day to acknowledge that our players and management gave everything out there. We are a club that refused to die and we have players who didn’t give up. The football gods can be so cruel and defeat is hard to take but congratulations to Oldham on their success. I have supported Southend United all my life, mostly from the West Stand but as a season ticket holder in South Upper for the last 22 years. From next season it will be away games mostly for me as my wife and I are moving to Hampshire. I have loved being part of the South Upper community from my seat in the front row and my thanks to those around me who have become my football friends. You know who you are.

And next season? Automatic promotion. Come on you mighty Shrimpers!

Yesterday was an emotional rollercoaster.

Gutted to have lost, just 10 minutes away from a return to the football league. 😢

But what at an achievement, a year ago we were days away from ceasing to exist to turn that around with an incredible run to Wembley is amazing.

Thank you to COSU, King Kev and the players who have optimized the Never Give Up attitude that has become our mantra, taking every game in the playoffs to extra time - that makes me f*%king proud to be a Shrimper.

We’ve got our club back and we’re just getting started.

Never Give Up 🦐

I said that I wouldnt come back on here, whether we won or lost, but I think I should.

Southend fans were a credit yesterday. Everyone I spoke to was friendly, but passionate. After the game too. Not an ounce of anger towards us, just disappointment. It sounds patronising, but I honestly do hope you go up next year. You deserve it.

As for the game, I thought we were the better side if I'm honest and created more. On another day Monthe pokes the ball away & it's 0-0. We get an early pen. Apparently the challenge on Pett was a red too (not seen it back)

At 2-1 we were dead & burried. Southend fans were bouncing, for the first time all game we were silent. The 2 mins turnaround is a blur. I don't really remember the 3rd other than it being a massive fluke. I'm (ever so slighty) sad in a way that is how we won it. You didnt deserve that.

I cant really remember he last 10 mins other than it being as if we hung on for dear life.

The club that success forgot, was finally remembered.

See you in League 2 2026/27.

I really don’t understand the digs at the ref today. I thought he let a lot go, maybe a bit too lenient at times. Could’ve easily seen two red cards (Miley & one of theirs later on).

None of his decisions led to a goal or was the talking point of the match.

If he was a really terrible ref, he would’ve given the Fondop penalty in the first half.
He was poor, inconsistent, whistle happy, didn’t let the game flow. Missed two penalties. He wasn’t just bad for us, he was worse for us but still didn’t give Oldham some decisions they should have got. He was dreadful. And that was a foul on fondop first half, missed the ball took the man, it’s a pen.

He gave a penalty, which I think is the definition of a ref making a decision which led to a goal.
A penalty that was 100% a penalty…

Could’ve given that penalty on 3 of our players in the same move… Goodliffe’s shirt pulling, Gus’s foul or Husin’s shirt pulling & foul…

Although our support was big in numbers too many were more worried about half time drinks and sausage rolls many left 5 minutes before half time and returned 5 minutes after the break and need not understand why the score board said 1.1 while the Oldham support was all back for half time. Also thought our support was quiet when most needed. ------------ still upset
I saw lots of people returning to their seats having missed the equaliser and not even aware that Oldham had scored.

TBH I recon the Oldham fans / Club were better organised than us with seating arrangements as they were better grouped together. I for one couldn't get my seat where I wanted it to be!

Hello

Oldham fan in peace.

Have enjoyed posting and reading this forum over the last few weeks.

A few points.

Your fan base is amazing. I know we always have good support, but today to see 2 huge, noisy and passionate supporters packing a Wembley made it a real occasion.

As for the game…..I have never been as mentally exhausted after a game of football ever. My heart rate was at 136 bpm in the last 5 minutes.

Also before the game I said that it was close to call, but felt that if we played to our best we would win. I think we didn’t play as well as I’d hoped - but that was more due to how you played I think, and you nullified the threat that we’d used so well in the previous 2 games.

The first goal knocked us - and I didn’t feel in the game for next 20 minutes, but then we didn’t play get more control and as stated we missed some good opportunities (and how Fondop missed that one near the end of the half I will never know).

Second half we got the penalty and I thought that would spur us on, but from our POV it felt like you were the better team for the rest of the half - even though we did have two good opportunities to score.

The early goal in ET seemed to floor us…team looked out of gas, our supporters were deflated and flat. Couldn’t see how we would get back in the game….and then 2 minutes of football that was out of the blue changed everything.

We are delighted to have won it, but I cannot hand on heart say it was well deserved. It was a close, tight game, and probably a draw and the penalty lottery would have been a fair outcome.

However after 34 years of waiting, I will be selfish and say I don’t care, and the memory of today - sharing it with my wife, my 7yo son and 80 year old Dad will be cherished forever.

The posts on here have been heartfelt, honest, and generous to Oldham - and I genuinely wish you success next season. There is not another team in the NL that deserves promotion more next season.

I will leave you to your angst and disappointment.

Yours in sport
Thankyou for your lovely, generous and extremely relatable post. All the best next season.

Couldn't get to watch the Dazn stream but managed to listen to the BBC Essex commentary it sounded fantastic I was ecstatic 4 mins in but knew Oldham would pressure us and was elated when Leon put us ahead so eventually we just couldn't get over the line.Am I dissappointed of course but the team gave us everything and didnt give up but overall Oldham deserved it.they had to much experience on the day it wasnt to be for us.
We go again next season which won't be easy Kev needs to strengthen to give us a chance to get automatic promotion, playoffs are great if you win as we all know from previous adventures but so horrible if you loose
