I would have thought there'd be more away fans behind the goal in the South Bank if it was Peterborough. Even then, there'd have been a hundred or so minimum. Scunny and the other average northern teams would have struggled to fill their coach those days.

I did think that, as well, but it can't be any other game, by process of elimination.

It could be that Peter Mason kept Pennyfather in the Number 3 column in his book, for consistency. It was the only game Lampard featured in at the end of that season. Lampard probably wore 3 that day (his normal number) and Pennyfather switched to 4.

If you work that season through, there is no other game it could be.

Not strictly true. I would question the No. 7 as not being Paul Clark, but instead Glenn Pennyfather. I think the game was the FA Cup 1st round home defeat to Newport County on November 16 1985. This was the infamous match where big Roy was red-carded after 7 mins for Kung-fuing Tony Pulis. I checked the picture in Red Card Roy, and it does tie up. The black Newport player I think was Steve Mardenborough and the referee was Tony Ward. It all depends on the No.7, but if you look closely, it could well be Pennyfather (similar hair) rather than Clark.

Do you know what. I think you might be right. I hadn't thought of the FA Cup match, but if 2 is Stead and not May, then that could well be right.

Would Newport have worn white rather than orange?

Edit : See post below :-

They did wear white, as well! :-

Yes, as I said the picture in Big Roy's book shows them in a similar strip for that cup-tie as the one in your photo.

I reckon you are spot on with that

Interesting point as his only start he wore the number 10 shirt, apparently, so that suggests you are right.

I've not got a clue. I couldn't even find a photo of him, let alone a Wikipedia entry.

Pryer also featured in the match which drew the lowest ever crowd to Roots Hall for a first team competitive game. Probably not his fault.

I'm reckon the 7 is Clarky as it's his build and he appears to have a beard.

I think the ref was Alf Buksh too.

One of the things that has really changed is that no-one in the crowd seems to be wearing colours. There's maybe one guy in a scarf and that's it.

I was convinced it was Clarky, I have to say.

The key is who do we think the number 2 is?

Stead played against Newport
May played against Peterborough

I must admit, I'm swaying more towards Stuart's answer. The pic also does have a November feel to it, rather than Easter.

The ref in the photo is definitley Tony Ward. Alf Buksh was black. Tony Ward had this vendetta against Roy - always booked him or sent him off. Another clue is that we seem to missing a forward in the photo! He was already in the bath.

I think the photo is miss leading. It could be someone obscured in the crowd that makes the 7 appear to be looking up top his right rather than just the back of his head.

Have you eliminated any late season Friday night games as did we not KO at 7:30 in those days, so could be an early action shot during one of those matches.

Yep, I had that in mind, as well.

The only other game it could have been is Port Vale, which was the final game on 5th May and played on a Monday. However, it just doesn't look that late in the season.

I think Stuart is right, in all honesty.

Yep you're memory is going old timer. He was definitely a centre back. He actually started in the Spurs youth squad.

I've found another game Terry Pryer played in.

It was the 5-0 win at home to Rochdale on 2nd May 1986.

Looks like he played centre-half, as he replaced Shane Westley and wore the number 5.

I was just looking to spot any 80's fashions on the terrace and noticed some open coats and even a jumper so it must have been a mild day in November.

Equally there might be some amber in a couple of scarfs behind the goal.
