you wouldnt spend sixteen quid and get 5,000 other people together to watch 22 blokes kick a ball around on the street..   this is all toss, football is about beers, pies, swearing and irrational hatred of a group of strangers for 90 minutes, depite the fact that if you were on tour with england they would be your best mates..  its doesnt make 'adult' sense but there you go  its what makes it fun..   if southend f.c. want 5,000 people sitting clapping nicely and discussing that great 'one two' then fine.. they can do without my 16 quid and my mates sixteen quids and beer money on our monthly visits to the hall..
I'm with you there.

After spending the week at work being polite to everyone it's great being able to shout out 'You pr*ck!' to a ref, lino and visiting players and generally release a bit of anger at the end of the week. That's partly what going to football is about IMO. Although if i see i'm near to a bloke with his young boy, for example, i do try to keep a lid on it.

I think in the USA they have banned swearing at football matches. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried that here at some point with the way things are going. Of course it would never realistically happen here but it still wouldn't surprise me.

What was it they were saying on the news the other day about censoring out the swearing of players on televised games, what ever next!!

Very well put and sums up perfectly my feelings on this subject. Quite frankly I am big enough and ugly enough to fight my own battles with the stewards if this policy continues (not fight literally, but you know what I mean) but it is good to know that there are others who feel the same way.

It seems like quite a few people watch football for the release of their pent up emotions and this is not new to football by any means, so my question is...

What do these people do, if we have a game like say Southend 4-2 Swansea, where we were always on top and even the ref had a good game? You would still have these pent up emotions inside, which surely can't be relieved by the exstacy of a win?

My own opinion is that there are better ways to relieve these emotions than by abusing people with hand gestures and I fail to see what it achieves if like many say... that it is not directed in any particular area. By all means, the occasional swear word directed at an official with a passion, is part of the game and some (who haven't already had a sense of humour bypass) actually smile when being called a w-anchor.

Go easy on the Stewards and Security though... whilst some are not the sharpest tools in the box, if they do as they are told, they are doing their jobs. Rules are made for everyone's safety (not an issue here I know) and whilst some of you may not like these rules, it is inevitable that there will be some that are enforced more than others...

However, the real problem is interpretation and in some cases power of enforcement! Dave Jobson may have written the rule book for all I know because some of the things match-day staff are asked (expected) to do are indeed questionable... It is how match-day staff interpret what is expected of them that might be more of an issue here though, which leads us back to the topic in question of fans being unhappy about the constant harrassment by the men (ladies) in yellow, orange or white coats.

Unfortunately, for this I have no real answer and I have worked at the club (for my sins) since 1992. For us, identifying what are the important rules is of paramount importance... whereas something that is low risk, can be allowed to slide as long as we don't get a call to act.

In short, I would say react but don't over-react, if something happens on the pitch that you don't like.

What a pile of trite drivel you have posted.  Don't do this, don't do that!  Exactly the jobsworth attitude we'd expect from the club.  But there's a difference, we're just mere simpleton fans

so you'll have to be more specific than that.  Could you produce a list of suggested reactions for all situations that might occur, pretty please.  So that none of us cross the line in future.

you laugh at all the swansea fans who are giving you w***er signs

If you are caught, on camera doing something that you shouldn't be doing then you don't really have a leg to stand on.

I agree that this is a ridiculous over-reaction by the stewards but if he hadn't have been doing it he wouldn't have been spoken to.

I think boycotting the club (especially if he is a season ticket holder) is also a bit of an over-reaction.

I am surprised you consider one of my posts to be trite drivel. I thought the way it was worded explained my views ok... Am I not entitled to an opinion from my side of the fence?

Those were my views and not those of the club's. That makes this a personal attack because I have a different view to yours... how can that be right?

No, but then I don't suppose you could either.

I don't see the attraction of a job where you get hated for £20 and the fun of being ordered around by jobbo

Sucker for £20 notes methinks!

If anyone has an issue with either the ground regulations or the way they are being administered they should be addressed to the management, Shooting messengers never really works.

If however it is a matter of Bylaw then the clubs hands are tied and its a council matter. If its a law issue then its the MP I'm afraid.

In my next life I will return to support Southend United as a b***k one-legged single-parent lesbian asylum seeker.
Pick on me then , if you dare !

Where did I say you couldn't have an opinion.  That I think it's drivel (for which my thesaurus gives tosh, poppycock & rot as alternatives, take any one of those if it massages your hurt feelings) is just my opinion.  Nowhere did I say "you can't say that".  Same old, same old with this message board, state that what someone says stinks, even without a hand gesture, & they go all wobbly go on about not being able to have an opinion.

I maintain that is the attitude I'd expect from the club.  If you read that comment to say "you" as the club, not alot I can do about that.  You're the one who mentioned working for the club & now say's "my side of the fence", who's fence?  My personal side of the fence is from the fans side, but is it a 3 sided fence?  Fans, Club & Techy.  If you want to take anything as a personal attack then not a lot I can do about that either.

But then I'm not the one telling people how to behave.  Just trying to get some idea of what "react but don't over-react" is supposed to mean.  It seems a indefinable concept to simple old me!  But you may know different.

If you're addressing that comment to me & it's about Technician, then by saying that he's a messenger of the club you are now guilty of launching a personal attack on him!

I was referring to Stewards, police or anyone employed to uphold regulations or law but who have no input in the law/regulation making process...

damn, I bit......

Without volunteers the costs for the club who be considerably higher.

If Stewards, Turnstile operaters etc were recruited through agencies, the costs would be higher.

IIRC we contracted out the stearding several years ago. I believe there were many complaints of heavy handedness and the contract was cancelled after a few games

Yeah, you're right. It was ridiculous.

Personally, I wasn't involved but then again I've never given a steward any reason to complain.

Somehow, at every Division 1 ground I've been to, they've always had to say something. Not sure what I do wrong on my travels....

I always feel that hand gestures and obscene language is used by people who have a limited vocabulary and do not have a sharp enough mind to use a witty retort.

Sarcasm is so much more rewarding.

Anyway I am not sure what is wrong with using the alledged hand gesture, as it is not as if the target could deny it.

After all are not all sexually active men and most women guilty of partaking in this activity, either on one's own or with a partner??
