No rude hand gestures allowed

It also bemuses me the way some people need a smiley before they realise that anything's ironic. Perhaps, in future, instead of hand gestures, supporters should take with them a selection of printed smileys, so that stewards and fellow supporters know exactly what you mean when you say anything during the game.

Do I win £10?

I'm too old to argue with a 2nd, who lets face wasn't ever & still isn't fit to wipe Vic's arse, b*stard even that he was.
The annoying thing is that we were sticking with the club during the dire Alvin Martin era when they would have had trouble dragging people in from the streets to watch us play. As soon as we start to get a little bit of success and some bigger crowds they are alienating the loyal few as it appears we are now surplus to requirements.

Sorry to harp on about it but it really annoyed me and I'm still fuming. Next home game will be interesting I have to say, could go a long way to deciding my future as a Southend fan.

Maybe a few Saturday lunchtimes in The Swan before heading down to watch Heybridge Swifts could be in order next season. Add a few trips via Stanstead to watch Monaco, Valencia and a couple of other continental teams for variety as well. What do you reckon Hooly?

Perhaps Alanis Morrisette should have tried that eh?

I think a swift kick up the ar.se and a dab of Andrews Liver Salts would've done more for Alanis Morrisette that her post-ironic female-ironic-angst music. Though she looks cute driving that car with a tea cosy on her head.

She'd make a good steward. If you misbehaved she'd moan and moan and whinge and snivel until you eventually gave up and started taking sennapods for your kicks. Again. And she's sort out our current stewarding. After all, I'd always take a middle-aged woman against a bunch of old women.

I do hope someone from the club is reading this (cheap, ironic posts aside). If they think the way to encourage people to the Hall, whilst the team is on a crest of a wave, is to alienate long standing supporters and season ticket holders, then someone needs a good kick up the jacksie.

It's a sad state of affairs when it comes to something like this, and our pathetic stewards and Dave Jobson are the root cause of it! He's a right one as well, that Clive who is a stewards supervisor over on the east stand. He thinks he's a copper, W****R!!!

Our stewards dont want to know about away fans, cause their scared!!!!

I would feel just like you mate if the same thing happened to me!

Our stewards are p****s!

P.S. I liked your pictures of Cardiff on here that you posted, very good. When everyone was waving at the CCTV camera yesterday i noticed you, i woundered what all the trouble was about!

Im a steward in the East End Blacks, but after hearing about this I think thats it for me. Its ridiculously over the top and annihaliting loyal fans who have stuck by the club through thick and thin is a disgrace.

The standing ten minutes before the end of the game is a waste of time and annoys people because you are in the bloody way, the stewards on my side of the ground generally havent got a clue what they are doing, a couple of times yesterday they were standing up because a bloody free-kick had been given.

I might finish this season but I'm definetely not doing it anymore after that.

Of course the reaction of the stewards seems over-officious and entirely unempathetic with the passion that being a supporter brings to these moments and we all know so well. And as all these incidents escalate, when stewards with an extremely limited brain capacity continue to bathe in their limited power it only goes to incite us fans even more.

But let's not try and pretend that making such hand gestures is all good and great and should be actively encouraged - as seems to be the growing feeling in this thread. Would you make a gesture like this to someone on the street or in a bar without expecting repercussions? No. So why should it be any different at a football ground, surrounded by children and women?

And to confuse this issue with fans who don't care or show passion is to hide behind am extremely thin argument.

Yep, talk about over-reaction. If someone wants to get on the pitch then they will.

I wouldn't make that gesture in the street no, I do it at football because I feel that is the time and place for it. I am not in a family stand but behind the goal - traditionally the place where the more vocal and passionate fans congregate. To my mind if you go in that part of the ground then you must expect to see and hear certain things.

I have no problem with people who choose to watch the game in a more sedate manner, but feel there has to be a place in football for a certain amount of passionate support.

Sorry DA, I think you're way off the mark there (as is so often the case!!)

If you make such a gesture on the street or in a bar, then the gesture is aimed at whomever may be standing in the direction of the gesture. At a football match, a certain level of goading must be allowed, else most of the ground would be ejected at some point for some menial abuse of human rights.

The parties I represent have assured me that, while they think it's a bit naughty, it can, and will, be permitted in the eyes of God, and all subsidiary companies, whilst in a football ground. Especially the said gesture is done towards Orient or C********r fans.

Notice that they dont do anything when away fans stand through the entire match.  Too scared aren't they!
I wrote to the club a few years ago and complained about this. Their reply was along the lines of the fact that away fans only visit the ground once a season and therefore they can't really react effectively to persistent standing. I replied that they obviously missed the point by a few hundred yards; if you get the away fans abiding by the rules and regulations of the ground ~ and many other grounds do exactly that ~ then the home fans are likely to abide by them as well. They didn't reply so I guess they realised that something COULD actually be done about it and didn't really want to ...

The stewards should stop hasling people who are contravening stadium regulations and stop those who are breaking the rules by smoking....

or does this board only want the regulations they like enforced ?

I think the point is that the stewards should be applying the rules and regulations to all FOUR sides of the stadium in an attempt to achieve a required level of compliance. Targetting only home fans ~ irrespective of the level of offence ~ just serves to provoke and antagonise. I think the club needs to understand that. Such gestures might be deemed unsuitable for Roots Hall as laid out in ground regulations but should there be a certain level of discretion applied here?
