But what in his CV tells you that he has this ability to get the best of out of these players? He had a couple of good years at Bolton, took Blackburn to 10th, utterly failed at Newcastle and West Ham have shot up the table since he left.

Slaven Bilic got the best out of the players at West Ham. Allardyce didn't.

Sacking Allardyce was the start of Blackburn's decline under the Venkys. Most managers have 'failed' at Newcastle. He was only given half a season there.

Allardyce established West Ham back in the Premier League. Yes Bilic had a great first season but Payet was a big factor in that.

And of course he kept Sunderland up last season which was an excellent achievement given the position they were in.

They stayed up by default because of how terrible Newcastle performed. He did everything that he could have done but it still shouldn't have been enough.

Anyone - literally anyone - could have done the job he did at West Ham. He made an arse of getting them promoted and then had a midtable side in midtable playing stone age football.

Newcastle is the closest comparison to the job that he'll be expected to do with England. At Newcastle his results on the field were mediocre but not terrible but in every single other part of the job - dealing with fan expectation, close work with a media who weren't his normal handful of cronies who inflate his achievements in exchange for nuggets of information, and in dealing with his Chairman he was a massive failure.

Usually I say that I hope someone can prove me wrong. Phil Brown, for example. I don't hope Sam Allardyce proves me wrong. He's a chancer, he's a crook and I want nothing to do with him as England manager.

Met Mike Ashley a few years back, he was rather hammered but we spoke to him for a while and he said the biggest mistake he made was getting rid of big Sam. He got carried away as a fan with the romance of bringing Keegan back and said Newcastle would never have been relegated if he had just stuck with Sam.

Personally I would have gone for Howe, but big Sam will do a decent job,WC QF will be ok.

Sam did miracle work at Bolton.

Bruce called for interview too,not a bad shout for him either.

Well it could be Bruce now!!But i doubt it..how desperate are England!!
As for getting the best out of players, making them want to play for you and England,i thought Kevin Keegan proved that wrong, although when he got the job,i thought he would make a good go of it...shows you what i know

i was chatting to my mate today who goes to watch England a lot and he's up for Big Sam. my mate says he think under Big Sam we'd be structured and do set pieces well and, crucially, we'll be more likely to play the best team rather than the best players. Alli for example should have been dropped for Henderson and he thinks Sam is more likely to make the big calls.

so fair enough for me. and I want an English manager and there isn't much else

Half a season being 20 or so games, training with the players every day for 6 months.

That's like two years of being an England manager. If he needs that long England won't qualify for the World Cup:omg:

Little unfair on Bruce, but amusing nonetheless

Old PB was on Radio 5 this morning blowing smoke up Allardyce's backside - do we expect the Bolton scenario to raise its ugly head if Big Sam's name is announced on Friday?

News form sky sports

They are saying that Sam Allardyce will be named as the next England manager in a day or 2 .So on his return from spain where does it leave us .With Phil Browns dream of working will Allardyce as a coach in the England set up .

I do hope so Phil Browns stupid dreams could scupper or season before it has begun .Cant see Ron allowing that to happen some how .

Love this quote...

@BBCSport He's a revoultionary manager bringing new ideas to the table. Sorry, not "ideas". I meant pie & chips. Pie & chips to the table.
