Nelson Mandela Dead

I'm not here to defend the IRA and the size of Thatcher's balls can probably wait for another time but a very basic search on Pinochet will tell you that he is not the kind of person that the leader of a democracy should be associated with. Mandela was convicted by a racist undemocratic state for actions intended to create a democratic state. Why would Thatcher need the support of Pinochet? Surely the rest of the world would ask 'why is the leader of the UK hanging out with that ****?'

She needed Pinochet my dear *** because the entire continents of both North and South America dropped us like hot **** when Argentina invaded The Falklands. Even her best mate Regan was prepared to hang her and us out to dry. The irony of it all was South Africa offered help in the form of refueling and supply facilities which she turned down due to sanctions that where already in place. As the rest of the world, including our so called allies and commonwealth and the UN refused to condemn the original invasion by Argentina in the first place then Thatcher quite rightly tipped the lot of them bollocks and sought support from wherever.

Sounds like her balls were a bit shrivelled on that occasion. How compromising. Shame on her for being so desperate that she would associate our proud nation with any dictator that would give her the time of day. What a sorry tale. How embarrassing for us all.

You are quite right. Perhaps she should have just rolled over and handed The Falklands over without a fight. Then Gibraltar to the Spainish and Ulster to Eire. Then she should have handed all governing and sovereign rights to the EU, put us in our rightful place. Wouldn't that have made us proud eh?

Seeing her shrivelled balls in Pinochet's hands doesn't make me proud and that actually happened.

I am pretty sure France provided the UK intelligence regarding Exocet missiles.

Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinions but I think we can say as a matter of fact that Mandela does seem to be held in high enough esteem for some of the things he has done and campaigned for by billions of people worldwide (including many who have a far greater knowledge and understanding in world affairs and politics than any of us on here) for his passing to be mourned rather than celebrated. I think he had built up enough credit to make him generally a good icon rather than someone like Saddam Hussein or Bin Laden whose history doesn't seem to contain much to write home about and certainly nothing that would be missed (on a global scale of course) after they departed.

May I suggest that to avoid hypocrisy diverting threads like this, that all those who gloated about Thatchers death apply the same standard and allow people to do the same about NM

Likewise those who objected to the Anti MT posts when she died apply the same sentiment in this case.

A 95 year old man has just slipped away, after a long illness, hardly surprising news.

The difference with others he is being compared with is that his cause has generally been accepted as a good cause and that he handled the situation one his cause was affirmed in a publicly acceptable manner.

This.

As usual, people are taking polarised views which is frankly ridiculous for a man like Mandela - a man guilty of unquestionably terrible things (albeit in an open war against a brutal regime) who then went on to inspire a nation to tackle its ills.

He was no saint for sure but his legacy needs to be seen in balance.

Hank, if you're banging on about balance perhaps you should consider changing the baiting nature of the title of this thread.
