Loanee watch 2022-23

NL S
Jon Benton scored a free kick (anyone have the video?) but Braintree lost 3-1 at second place Havant and Waterlooville to dent their playoff hopes.

Jack Wood’s Tonbridge faced Slough who had two ex-Shrimpers on the bench in Elliot Benyon and Louis Walsh. Tonbridge cruised into a 3-0 lead at half-time but Slough pulled one back from 25 yards on 50 minutes. Jack Wood was then subbed on 65 minutes with the Angels 3-1 up. 10 minutes later Slough added a second from range and soon afterwards levelled it up.

Tommy Davis’ Hampton and Richmond took on Gus Scott-Morriss’ old club Hemel. They fell behind to a ball over the top just after the hour mark and Hemel made it safe with 10 to go.

Isthmian Prem
Oli Coker made his debut at Bognor Regis for Aveley. Aveley fell behind to a goal just before half-time but battled back to score an equaliser midway through the second half.

Isthmian North
Luke Reeve was back in the Tilbury side as they took on Spud’s Maldon and Tiptree who had Harry Phillips and Terrell Egbri in their starting line-up. It was a Harry Phillips penalty that won it in the 85th minute with the only goal of the game.

Tilly’s Heybridge we’re up against Basildon United. Louie Arrowsmith who extended his loan until the end of the season played against former youth team teammate Callum Burkey. The Swifts were 2-0 up inside 13 minutes but Basildon pulled one back from nowhere. Heybridge scored again to go into the break 3-1 up. A goal 3 minutes after the restart out the result beyond doubt and they later added an injury time fifth for good measure.

Luke Reeve’s Tilbury were in Isthmian North action the other night against high flying Stowmarket. Tilbury fell behind in the 6th minute and conceded two more either side of the hour mark. The defeat keeps Tilbury in the relegation play-off places.

No Jon Benton for Braintree presumably as they were in FA Trophy action and we refused permission to cup tie him.

Tonbridge were in NLS action but Jack Wood was riding the pine. He came on in the 84th minute with them drawing 2-2 at St Albans and they grabbed a winner 5 minutes later.

Also in the NLS Tommy Davis was in the Hampton and Richmond side that took on Oxford City. The Beavers took the lead on 54 minutes with a header from a free kick. They should have doubled it 10 minutes later when they had a penalty saved. Oxford duly went up the other end and equalised. Oxford then went down to 10 minutes after a second bookings but Hampton were unable to take advantage of their numerical advantage and it finished 1-1.

Isthmian Prem
Oli Coker was prominent in Aveley’s 1-0 at home to Wingate. Coker had his first shot blocked on 4 minutes. Aveley then took the lead just before ht. second half Oli went close from 18 yards before Aveley then missed a penalty on an hour. On 83 minutes Coker went close again, cutting inside and shooting with his left but the keeper saved. Aveley won 1-0 to move up to 5th.

Isthmian North
Louie Arrowsmith was in Tilly’s side that took on Coggeshall. The game finished goalless but Arrowsmith did break free into the box only to shoot straight at the keeper for one of the better chances in an uneventful game played in poor conditions.

Luke Reeve’s Tilbury’s game fell victim to the elements.

I went to Parkside this evening, where Oli Coker came on in the 66th minute of tonight’s Velocity Trophy fixture between Aveley and Leatherhead.

The Millers led 1-0 at the time, and Coker immediately showed some nice touches in midfield, threading a precise through-ball to a team-mate within a few minutes. Seconds later he smashed a shot from just outside the penalty area against the right-hand post.

Leatherhead went straight up the other end and equalised against the run of play, and when Aveley next threatened it was Coker that forced the visiting goalkeeper into an excellent parried stop with a rasping effort from 18 yards out.

With just two minutes remaining, Coker put Aveley back in front with an outstanding goal, shifting the ball out of his feet and advancing to around 20 yards out before hitting an unstoppable angled finish over the goalkeeper and dipping under the crossbar. It was a really special goal and earned the Millers a 2-1 win.

Oli mentioned in the interview after Aveley’s previous match that he’d been asked to play out wide in his first couple of appearances, but here he was positioned just off the front man through the middle. It gave him the chance to influence the play in an advanced position, and he made it count with his first goal for the Millers.

Jon Benton was on the bench once more for Braintree as they hosted Bath City. An injury on the half hour however saw him introduced with the game still goalless. Bath went ahead in first half injury time but Braintree fought back with the equaliser coming 15 minutes from time from John White with a surprisingly skilful effort that’s worth checking out. Then in injury time Braintree snatched a winner against their midtable rivals. Jon Benton was second in the man of the match voting with 30% of the 115 votes cast, so hopefully he’ll get a bit more match time.

Tommy Davis’ Beavers were due to play Jack Wood’s Angels but that fell to the weather.

Isthmian Premier
Oli Coker was on the losing side as Aveley fell to a hard luck 1-0 home defeat to Cray. Aveley were on top for much of the game but Cray scored with their first attack on 38 minutes and despite waves of attacks Aveley couldn’t quite find a way through.

In the Isthmian North Luke Reeve scored his first senior goal to salvage Tilbury’s first point since 3rd December. New manager Scott Dash had an immediate impact that left Tilbury looking on course for a rare clean sheet until the New Salamis scored in the 83rd minute from a corner. However in stoppage time Luke Reeve rose highest at the near post from a corner to grab a much needed point against the team in 8th to move out of the relegation places. Reeve was also booked just before halftime.

Louie Arrowsmith’s Heybridge fell to a home defeat against Grays. The Swifts fell behind in the 55th minute and despite five minutes later Grays being reduced to 10 men, the visitors held on to leapfrog Tilly’s men.

Another Monday evening trip to Parkside, where Oli Coker started for Aveley against Hastings United in the Isthmian League Premier Division.

Aveley went 1-0 down after about 90 seconds, and they struggled throughout the first half with Coker, playing in a central role again, unable to get onto the ball.

However, in the second half it was a completely different story and Coker got the Millers back on level terms with a clinical left-footed finish before Kenny Aileru put Aveley in front.

Coker almost netted a second, this time with his right foot as he attempted to sweep home a right-wing centre, but the Hastings goalkeeper gathered the ball at the second attempt.

He was substituted on 80 minutes, and Aveley held on to register a 2-1 win that lifts them up to third in the table, one point behind leaders Hornchurch, albeit having played four more games.

Tommy Davis’ Hampton and Richmond had the long (by NLS standards) trip to Weymouth. They won’t have been too chuffed when the game was called off at 7pm.

Jack Wood was on the bench as Tonbridge hosted Dover. He came on with Tonbridge 3-0 with 13 minutes remaining and scored an injury time fourth for Tonbridge. It was his second of the season and should give him a boost as he attempts to regain a place in the starting XI. Both Wood at Tonbridge and Benton at Braintree have found themselves on the bench recently. Wood is under contract for a further year so it’s not quite make or break for him but the clock will be starting to tick, especially when his progress is measured against Lewis Gard, who was released last season but is a regular at Tonbridge. It is however worth noting that Wood is a couple of years younger than Gard. Hopefully this goal helps kick him on.

NLS

Jack Wood’s Tonbridge took on Jon Benton’s Braintree as Braintree travelled to K*nt, however Jack Wood was on the bench again and there was no Jon Benton (injured? Braintree only named 4 on the bench). Wood came on with about 10 minutes left in an attempt to break the deadlock but it finished goalless.

With his loan just extended until the end of the season, Tommy Davis was in the Hampton and Richmond defence for their trip to 3rd place Havant. Hampton needed points being 19th in the table. It was goalless until the 67th minute but Havant scored from a free kick. Hampton equalised with 5 minutes left to grab an impressive point.

Isthmian Prem
Oli Coker’s 4th placed Aveley traveled to leaders Hornchurch. They took the lead from an Oli Coker free kick whipped over the wall. Second half Hornchurch drew level from a controversial penalty before Aveley regained the lead. An impressive away win for Oli Coker that moves them up to second. They’re level on points with leaders Enfield but have played 3 more matches.

Isthmian North
Tilly’s Heybridge made the short trip to struggling Hullbridge with Louie Arrowsmith in their side. They took an early lead on 7 minutes. They doubled it on 16 minutes when Arrowsmith won the ball back and set up a cross that was knocked home. With 10 to go Hullbridge pulled one back which set up what might have been a nervy finish but Heybridge got a penalty to make it 3-1 with a minute remaining.

Luke Reeve was in the Tilbury team that hosted Felixstowe and Walton. Whilst Heybridge took a 7th minute lead they only needed 5minutes to get in front but their playoff chasing opponents pegged them back on the half hour mark. They then fell behind after the restart and Felixstowe made it safe with 7 minutes remaining. It finished 3-1.

I saw Jon Benton at Rootshall before the game today and asked him why he’s not with Braintree today and he told me his loan expired and is unsure if it’s being extended etc

In the midweek action Tommy Davis’ Hampton and Richmond made the long trip again to Weymouth in NLS. They fell behind after 9 minutes and Weymouth scored again straight after half time. Although Hampton pulled one back they felt to a 2-1 defeat.

Tonbridge were in K*nt Senior Cup action against Gillingham. Jack Wood came in as one of just two changes as they fielded a strong side. They took a lead after 3 minutes and should have doubled it when a penalty was saved. The Gills equalised on 77 minutes and it went to penalties with the Angels winning the shootout 4-1.

In the Isthmian North Luke Reeve dropped to the bench for their relegation clash with Great Wakering. They didn’t seem to miss him as they kept a clean sheet and even pinched all three points with an injury time winner.
