OBD is right to say that Tilly did use a succession of targetmen while he was manager here. We were never really a long ball side though, or even particularly direct, and whenever we'd sign a Harrold, or Revell, or when we'd be linked with donkeys not fit to wear the shirt like Jon Parkin, Chris Iwelumo and Grant Holt people would ask the question of why Tilson persisted in playing targetmen when we never really seemed to play to their strengths.
It was a fair question. Matt Harrold rarely got into the box beyond those early cameos in the Championship. He'd end up coming deep, holding the ball up 35 yards from goal and bringing other players in from there. Sturrock plays through a targetman but generally far closer to the opposition goal. Shaun Goater is the only player that Tilly ever played in that role who ever played in positions to hurt the other team.
The most direct we were under Tilly was when we were playing balls over the top for Theo Robinson to run onto.
