Post-Match Thread and Ratings Leyton Orient 1-2 Southend United

Grant: I can't stand him. At fault for the goal with three mistakes in the space of two minutes. Just not good enough. Some good tackles and positioning but how many more goals will he cost us before the fans can see his is a massive liability.

Me thinks your dislike of Grant is clouding your judgement!!! Did well up until the goal (yes, he was at fault) and is an important player for us.

Fell part after it though, whether that's through injury or not is open to debate

The fact we won this game against a dreadful Orient side must not hoodwink Tilson into thinking the 4-5-1 worked. Frankly again we never looked like scoring when we had loads of possession in the first half, we were too deep and had no attacking options. Scannell is coming in for unfair stick, he was a good outlet, providing much more than Moussa has been doing on the left. We actually got some balls into the box in the first half, but of course only Barnard was in there attacking it.

I was again impressed by Morrison, and felt Grant did well until taken off. But he was arguably at fault for their goal, why oh why do we have to shoot ourselves in the foot time and time again?? We did it on Boxing Day, against Hartlepool, Exeter and today and against a half decent side we would have been ruined.

Overall, important three points to keep us away from that danger zone and always satisfying to beat Orient although not enough to make up for Boxing Day.

Thing was, for me, why did we have to complicate things? 4-5-1 when defendeing and 4-3-3 when attacking.....WTF? Confuse the hell out of anyone!

Its not that confusing though is it?? I am fairly sure teams have been playing with this sort of formation for some time - when you haven't got the ball you have a solid five and when you have got the ball you have more attacking options with the two wide players and the central striker as well as the potential for at least one other midfielder to join in.

I know footballers aren't known for their intelligence but I am sure they could work it out. TBH I was more shocked that Tilson opted to try something different - I seem to remember him trying it at Oxford(I think!) and it didn't go well.

It's really not all that complicated: when we have the ball Laurent and Scannell push on and when the opposition have the ball we ask them to track back into midfield.

It's not exactly rocket science, is it?

When we have the ball, it allows the two wide players to push into advanced positions in order to recieve the ball. It's not a traditional 4-3-3 as such with 3 out and out strikers, more of a 4-3-2-1 using wide "Wing Forwards" in order to expose weaknesses at full back.

When we're defending, the Wing Forwards can revert back to a more conventional winger role in order to assist in defensive duties.

Just a shame we still only had just the striker plus one other in the box trying to be on the end of crosses.
We have all this possession and this is why it accounts for nothing all too often. Still, we won.

Players obviously struggled with it!

I wasn't there, but on the radio it sounded like we won the game...

It also sounded like we had the lionshare of posession in the first half, creating a few half chances and, on another day, could've been far more comfortable winners. A notable improvement on our recent away form.
I'm not saying it's a tactic we should use week in, week out, but it's something we should definitely be getting familiar with to use for tough away games... Especially against teams that rely on their midfields, i.e. Norwich or Southampton.

Ah alright, we're judging players on temporary form then? In that case, McCormack should've gone in the Summer.

Temporary form? Moussa has had a hell of a lot more mediocre games for Southend than he ever has had half-decent ones. He's been rubbish on the wing (obviously not his position) and none of us can judge him on his ability to play in the middle because he's barely ever played there.

He might be the player that certain people on here claim that he is, but based on the 40-odd games he's played in the first team here in which he's done very little I just don't see what that belief is based on.

Yeah you're right - a professionally-trained coach definitely chose today's formation because he read it on here and not because half of the Premier League have used that formation for the past five years. Why would Tilly pay any attention to that, eh?

Tilly has tried to change the formation on numerous occasions in the past but I believe that today was the first time that we've ever won under him playing anything other than 4-4-2. Personally, even though we won today I hope that we revert back to 4-4-2 sooner rather than later as it's what lower-league footballers have grown up with week-in-week-out for their entire lives and that's why 95% of teams in the bottom three leagues play that way.

Alright alright Beefs , 'twas only tongue in cheek - I'd never seriously claim to have influenced our mighty leader - just thought it might help enlighten
la vieille dame en bleue :)

With the lack of respect that some people on here show for our manager, nothing would surprise me.

Totally agree. Anthony Grant is definitely one of our most talented players and has proved this season just how versatile he is.

He plays where he is asked and performs well wherever asked. As a holding midfielder he has proved to be the best we have and never shirks a challenge showing the same commitment in every game.

He's probably one of the only players we have who could command a fee and I can't believe anyone can't see his value to the team.

Like you I believe someone's dislike of a player is clouding their judgement on his ability.

Sounds to me as if that's a comment that could be applied to people on here in relation to another CM.
