Leon Clarke Goes Back To The Owls

Sounds to me a bit like this boils down to the aforementioned issue between Leon, his agent and Wednesday....

The issue between between Leon, his agent and Wednesday is almost certainly regarding Leon's signing on fee/bonus.

The agents involvement will be that he is negotiating on Leon Clarke's behalf.

As I understand it, players when they sign a contract are given a signing on fee, a substantial part of which is deferred. If the player requests a transfer they lose their entitlement to this signing on fee. Sheff Wed don't want to have to be liable for this amount, particularly as it is bringing forward a payment that they probably wouldn't have to make for a couple of years but for the fact that he is leaving. Southend presumably don't want to pay it and are saying it wasn't part of the transfer fee that has been agreed so it is therefore an issue for Wednesday and Leon Clarke to resolve. Leon Clarke (or rather his agent) will be saying that he is contractually due this amount.

It will probably come down to who wants this move to happen the most: Wednesday to get him off the wage-bill, Southend to get him playing, or Leon because he wants to be at Southend.

As far as the scum are concerned,as soon as they sold all their big players and replaced them with all the wrong players who couldn't go around kicking everyone they would go downhill from their on .
They actually deluded themselves they could play a bit and Teddy Sherry would poke 'em in.
You have to laugh.

Our site has been updated with Team News for tomorrow but no mention of Clarke being on his back up north.

Well if we loose Clarke and loose tomorow against Rovers, it looks like we might be heading into a freefall down the league! I am sure Tilson wont let it happen though.

As YB said, there's a contractual dispute between Clarke & Sheffield Wednesday which is holding it up. I'd be very surprised if Leon doesn't move here sooner rather than later though and it wouldn't surprise me to see him start tomorrow still.

Either way, sorting out the defence should be the priority in the window ahead of signing Leon Clarke, Freddy Eastwood or anyone else.

Why does it look that way? We're on a bad run but are still one of the better sides in the division and Leon Clarke isn't one of the very best players at the Club anyway. Regardless of who plays upfront for the rest of the season, I don't think we'll have any real problem in scoring goals.

And how do you propose to do that?
There doesn't seem to be any ready made experienced centre-half a la Spinner/Sodje who's available to even be mentioned as a potential target.
Or do you subscribe to the "full-backs aren't defensive enough so that pulls Barrett/Clarke out of position constantly" theory?
Wouldn't getting in another defensive minded coach help us to learn from our mistakes and combat such abysmal errors that were in evidence from set-pieces at Donny?

I think the earlier comment somewhere else about the spine of the team being somewhat suspect these days holds a lot of weight. In my opinion, we need to strengthen both up front & defensively (possibly even a new GK too) as well as stop Bailey & Macca picking up silly needless bookings!

Bloody agents!

That is pretty much what I have heard. Apparently the money is due at the end of the season, as a kind of loyalty bonus.

However, my source has never got anything right yet!

No idea... I'm not the manager!

There are obviously major issues with the way that we defend and they've been there for a good 18 months now right from the end of the 05/06 season. We have a lot of talented defenders at this club but as a unit it isn't clicking. If we could get in a Sodje or a Prior then that would go a great deal of the way towards sorting this out but as you say this is a lot easier said than done. A goalkeeper of the standing of Mark Crossley or someone like that would go a long way towards solving our problems.

I think we lack leaders on the pitch which is probably why we are so bad at defending set plays, which is mostly an organisational issue. Two years ago we had the likes of Sodje, Prior, Goater and Bradbury. Maher, Barrett, Peter Clarke, Bailey and McCormack are all players with a great deal of character and msot have a decent level of experiance but not at the same sort of level of those previous four.

Wish I could be that optimistic. Our strikers have 2 league goals between them all season!

As I suspected, thinking along similar lines to me there!
