Lee Barnard

He's the exception that proves the rule!

He's repeatedly failed at Championship level, mainly because of his penchant for 3rd division players. He might be a decent coach, but he's a crap manager.

I think saying Peter Taylor is a cr*p manager is a bit harsh - whilst he wasn't doing that great at Palace, he got Gillingham promoted on a shoestring budget, and got Hull to the Championship, and kept them there - That in my book is the same amount of promotions as Tilly, and one more successful season at Championship level with a promoted team. :)

Stats can be deceptive I know, and I am not comparing him to Tilly, but I think he sometimes gets a bad press, and I don't think he is anywhere near as bad as some people make out - he is certainly having the desired effect at Stevenage right now.

He got Gillingham promoted by keeping the same team that came within 30 seconds of getting promoted the previous season.

He didn't have a shoestring budget at Hull.

His record in the transfer market is incredibly depressing: from £5m on Akinbiyi to £25,000 on Mark Hone he's consistently signed dross above their level. Even his few successes, Junior Lewis, he's tried to take to too high a level.

For me, I think that just killed your argument!

Teams who narrowly miss out on promotion through the play-offs often struggle the next season. To lose a Manager it makes it even worse. Lincoln are a prime example this season!

One more promotion than Tilly... you missed out taking up Brighton as champions! :flamer:

Taylor is at a non league side because his severance package from Crystal Palace was dependent on a Clause preventing him from managing a league club this season.

I'm afraid this is not true, and the Sun made an apology for suggesting it.

Is that Lincoln who made the play-offs for seemingly 7 or 8 consecutive seasons?

I think Spud's major problem as a coach is in the transfer market. At Gillingham he already had the team in place and therefore didn't have to rely on his skills in the transfer market.

No doubt critics will say Tilson's record is awful, but Tilson has made a number of excellent signings - not just Eastwood, but Bailey, Barrett, Prior, Goater, Bentley etc.

Try 5.... However, note the Manager bit, John Schofield kept them together for one more season of play-offs (Taylor got Promotion at first attempt), when Schofield failed, they are now falling apart, racking through new Managers and in danger of plummeting out of the league.....

Give the lad a chance...I just took a look on this page on the Spuds website, and it makes for quite confidence-inspiring reading.... http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/players/first_team/leebarnard.html

He was top scorer for Spurs in their Premier Reserve League campaign, and scored 17 in 17 in 04/05, and 18 in 19 in 05/06....regardless of the reserve element, he would still have been facing some half-decent players.

Perhaps as somebody else wrote in an earlier post, he may just need a local club to sign him permanently for him to start recreating that kind of form.

I have a Spurs supporting mate (who knows his stuff) and he seems to think that Barnard will be a good signing for us. He says he always seemed to score in the reserves and apart from having a bad injury, would have been more prominent in league games (not the Prem). He was never going to make it at Spurs but thinks he should score a fair few for us under the right circumstances.

I say lets wait and see!

When we played them last year I read the Crewe pre match interview with him and said some nice things about Southend United... ie we have great support etc....

That goes a long way with me anyway....

Agreed. I have also heard rumours of him being a donkey yet his time at Spurs in their reserves would seem to show otherwise and a few of the Spurs fans I know seem to think he's pretty good. His brother is friends with my brother so maybe I'll be able to find out if there's any truth in this...
