Sorry to not be as happy as others on here - I was never a Barnard fan (though appreciated his goals) am not a fan of Corr, and feel that Freddy is ****ed - so not a lethal strike force in my eyes.

BTW never liked Gower or Constantine either.

Also got to live up to my user name, and this is SZ for goodness sake we`re not supposed to be happy
:winking:

The best kept secret EVER! Understanding that there a few on SZ who go down to B&L to watch the training.....has he been in disguise?

"Tell me we've acquired a striker (Stanley)
And a lucrative sponsorship came through (on a free)
Will you, Blue
Can we not buy someone famous
And pull a crowd we can't contain at all
All true, Blue"

Yes, we have Alison............it's not Stanley but Lee will do, he's quite famous!

I'm as happy as the next person about Lee's signing but SZ wouldn't be SZ without someone adding a word of caution to the general euphoria. When he arrived here the first time was the word 'porcelain' associated with Lee? Jam Man referred to his injury problems at the start of this thread and hasn't he recently undergone an operation on his ankle? I seem to remember noting that we had done a brilliant job keeping him fit during his last period with us, let's hope we can carry that on this time. Looking back at his one complete season with us (2008/9), I noticed that he scored on the 11th of October and then went through a long period, until March 10th, before scoring again. I don't remember but was he injured during that time? With his scoring record it seems bizaare that he couldn't find the net in five months.......can someone elucidate?

I also am surprised he was signed after Smith decided to go to Swindon, so Barney was not a first choice in that selection process. He was a nuisance hard working team playing forward who held the ball up and took shots, headers and sniffed about the box, not a lot of pace so we need the likes of Lennie, Kevan, Strakes to know that and make the runs behind.

Although he doesn't have great pace, I remember him bursting through a few defences a for a one on one. He is a canny striker, and did this with great timing, with the defenders facing the wrong way. I hope Woodrow watches him and learns, as he is faster but gets the timing wrong and gets caught offside.

Lee's "porcelain" status went by the board after he spent some considerable time close season with the conditioning coach we had at the time (can't remember his name, Lawrence Bloom possibly?), and came back the following season - I think the one when he moved on - a much fitter and stronger Barney.

I would imagine the off field problems he went through had some effect on his goal scoring.

Good to have Barney back however returns don't always pan out, Eastwood?

Fingers crossed however

How do you know this?

Does sound unlikely as fans do watch training so surely someone would have mentioned it?

Could be just fitness training that he has been doing, don't think fans get to see that bit.

If he was here training with the team Id expect him to be on the pitch keeping some sort of sharpness to his game.

He could do Gym work anywhere.

Quite happy with the signing although well aware that things that were good first time round do not always pan out as well second time around. Hope this does not turn out to be one of these occasions however. I think Barney's career was going nowhere and for that reason alone let's hope he can repay Southend for the faith we have shown in giving him this chance to come back to Roots Hall.

Yeah, just trying to think of what they might have meant.

I also thought Brown said that Barnard only joined the team yesterday, but if he had been training from November then surely he would have mentioned that.

Yep. Brown said that he only started training with the team on Friday.

So far, we seem to have some conflicting information so I look forward to hearing what the real situation was (although it makes no difference). Perhaps there is something around the birth of his child and Lee training with Southend for part of the time rather than travelling all the way down to Southampton. Who knows.

And then apparently he couldn't play yesterday because he wasn't registered. Presumably that is just a paper chasing exercise with the football authorities.

Anyway, I expect to see him on the bench for Tuesday.

Listened to the pre-game interview with Brown on BBC Essex yesterday. Barnard came to the club and trained Friday. He is fit and ready to play but Brown decided to stick with the players that worked so hard for the 3-0 win at Chesterfield last week. He told them all before that game to go out and earn the shirt for the Hull game.
