Mate who supports Fulham says we've enquired about Matt Smith according to their fan site. I really like him - cannot see that coming off though at all.

I'd much prefer Michael Smith , big centre forward who we've faced several times in the past 4 years , now at Pompey.
He always looks a threat with a touch of class...

Here we go again ... couple of things !

- every signing , for every club , for any amount is a gamble !
- non league players .... can be far more expensive than you think. Firstly the top non league players ,but either be on a full time contract or targeted by teams with bigger budgets than ours . Secondly , other players may not wish to move to league clubs as the football is the secondary income and for them a move could put the into a worse financial position, only to end up on the football scrap heap 2 years down the line.
- do you not think that any manager, PB doesn't wish he could pluck a world beater from obscurity? Of course they do. Harder than people on her make it sound !

I'm not joining in on the debate of Cox again. Any one with eyes can realise his class. End of.

Who mentioned Cox this time round ?

Spot on.

He is one of the most aware footballers I've seen at Roots Hall.

Whenever he receives a pass, he already knows where everyone around him is. Constantly looking for gaps.

I always judge his type of player on whether you can see the pass coming and often with him, you can't. He picks out passes that just seem like they are not there.

The reverse pass in to Macca, for one of his goals this season, was a different level.

Matt Smith is a very good player and was key in Bristol City's promotion from this level a couple of years ago. Would be a good signing if true but I struggle to see it. Perfect replacement for Ranger if he's kicked his last ball for us.

On the pitch yes. Off the pitch. They have made multi millions in player sales.

So have we in the last few years. The good thing about investing money in the academy is none of the players cost anything in the first place. You don't get any expensive flops and you aren't paying high wages on someone you hope comes good.

By the way Posh lost £1m on Tyrone Barnett. We are in no position to gamble that sort of money. It is clearly not a club policy to sign these non league 'gems' and that won't change in the near future.

That just means the owner of Peterborough has a bigger house and drives a better car than Ron...

I seem to remember them paying 2 million for assombalonga to sell him a few months later for 7 million.

Darren mcanthony has always put his money into that club and has reaped rewards. He also spent millions on a new stand.

Dont we say on here i struggle to see it with just about everyone we are linked with. People said in the summer we didnt have a chance of signing Cox and yet he is now a Blues player?

He also used to be a time traveler, maybe he could go back and score a few against Gillingham, Fleetwood and Rochdale:smile:

Just to add, I think we're best ONLY signing players on free transfers [or maybe nominal fees]. Tilly's team was built more or less on free transfers until The Championship and the £200k for Foran, £200k for Harrold, £200k for Paynter, then £200k for Walker! All that money, what a nightmare!

If you pay nothing and get nothing, oh well, better luck next time. There will always be that one in 'x' that turns good.

It depends on the clubs ambitions and how much of the ambition is realistic. We have several 'quality' players but generally they are on the slide down, long history of injury/not playing and/or looking to redeem themselves and rescue their career.

What you say is historically the way clubs such as ours conducted themselves. The problem with the modern game is the shove on effect from having so many foreign players, particularly in the prem, which means very good quality players are now plying their trade in the league/s below the prem but are still good enough to command a transfer fee.

There are occasionally clubs that exceed their expected status but few that maintain it for very long. We used to look at the top flight and talk about the top four and the also-rans. The top four has extended to perhaps six or eight clubs and the also-rans go down to the middle of the Championship table.

To be genuine contenders, with longevity, well spent money is a must. With what we spend we are in as good a league position as we deserve and may occasionally have a tilt at promotions that in the short-term will result in relegation again. Even to be a long-term, bottom half of Championship contender, we need to be able to dig deeper than we do.

SSD thanks for posting the article, very interesting stuff!!
I was interested in the comments " Its a SECURE Business model in one of the most volatile environments "! and " its a surprise others dont follow suit" or perhaps they are just not good at it . 8 gems all picked from the lower leagues, also 3 from our patch. They had to splash out 870,000k though to get £13.5m back on their investment, although one was a free, and 3 other players cost £125,000. "Peterborough are the standard bearers for how to run a football club " Surely not, there are no gems out there as we know

Not sure we paid £200k for Harrold but I know we definitely didn't pay £200k for Walker. He failed his medical due to a heart condition and we got him on a reduced fee.

Our academy, and developing young players is our biggest asset at the moment.

As it was said in the Burt Finley thread, Man City's [and other big clubs] resources are so vast I can't imagine how many players must get released season on season... If it's about playing the long game, and the longevity of the club, being able to pick up these players and developing them would be a safer gamble for me - bit of a dreamer maybe - I'd love us to scour the non-league and find that gem but players are falling down the leagues without a second glance faster than they're rising through them and that's where I think the opportunity. I do agree with you on the ambition, and money being well spent, it's just something we haven't exhibited very well and I'm reluctant to change my opinion on that! Haha.

To be fair, I only remember the £200k being quoted at some point, and it was a long time ago.
