Breaking News Jack Sampson signs on loan

Yes, I was excited about this loan signing, but at Shrewsbury yesterday I was absolutely staggered by Sturrock's failure to involve him. Is he stubborn or stupid? Apart from the fact I would have started him instead of the lightweight and ineffective Benyon (1 League goal in the last 12 months and none since February last year), his failure to take off Dickenson after the bad head injury to the Shrews player was ridiculous. It was obvious to everyone there that he was just one tackle away from a red card and could not play anything like his normal game.

So our potentially best loan signing for ages gets 9 minutes football in virtually three weeks of his four week loan. Madness.

Spot on I'm afraid. Very baffling by Paul Sturrock, from a Manager that gets so many things right.

Was a very strange decision. Everybody at the game was expecting Dicko to be taken off before he was sent off. Even when it was 1 all, just before they scored, Sturrock was getting ready to bring on Ferdinand but surely after they scored he shouldve then got Sampson ready to come on instead of Ferdinand as we needed to get back in the game. Poor tactics against 10 men imo.

I was not at the game yesterday but in The Zone Chatroom with about 20 others and all to a man could not understand PS's thinking yesterday..Keeping Dicko on with not just a Yellow card to his name but a warning as well was stupidity. Why we have got Sampson and do not play him baffles me as much as everybody else, especially when he went on to put Mohsni up top leaving Gilbert as a centre half and Martin as a left back.We should of taken the game to them when they went down to 10,we did the complete opposite.

Agree with most of that except the criticism of Benyon. He's only just come to the club and I think we should give him more time to show us what he can do, your statistic looks bad until you remember that before Dickinson came to the club he hadn't scored since the 2009-10 season and he is now a decent scorer for us.
However if we aren't going to play Sampson then I agree I don't understand why he's here

We're challenging for promotion and the League title; we can't afford to give an underperforming player an extended run in a key position in the off chance he suddenly regain his goalscoring touch from a couple of years ago.

(Dickenson was "not scoring" at a higher level than Benyon was "not scoring" and got into gear pretty quickly; maybe I'm missing something but I haven't seen anything in Benyon's play to justify persevering with him at the moment.)

i too was astounded Sampson didnt come on for Dicko on saturday ... but i trust Sturrock 100 % + i would hazard a guess that maybe young Sampson hasn't been too impressive in training + the gaffer wanted to show him that unless he works hard every day then he cant expect to just turn up + play. I didnt like Sampson's interview after his debut which to me sounded like he expected that he was going to start the next game. If there's one thing we all should have learnt from Sturrock's spell here is that unless you are a team player then you will be dropped... remember how Ryan Hall struggled to start in his 1st year despite the fact to us fans he should have started ahead of Soares. A bit of discipline has improved Hall's game no end + i reckon the gaffer gets great pleasure from looking around the leagues + seeing how his coaching has helped players careers in the long run . ( Look how he turned a sluggish defender in Kenwyne Jones into a £9 million striker ) Lets see if young Jack learns to work his socks off this week + if he does , i feel sure he will shine on his home debut tuesday week .

Sturrock said he wanted to bring on Sampson and was going to but due to injuries picked up during the game it wasn't possible.

Sorry, that's garbage (not your comment, I mean Sturrock's).

A straight swap for Dicko when he nearly got sent off would not have been impacted by the injuries.

Similarly giving him the last however many minutes Ferdinand had would also have been possible.

Starting with him would have been a real option too.

I disagree with your guesswork. Any player coming from Bolton will certainly have a good training ethic. Of course he expected to play. If you're loaned out down 3 divisions to get match time, you'd expect to play. You do really well in a short cameo debut, yes you expect to play. He hasn't been sent down here to "learn how to train", he's been sent to get match time, perhaps a few goals and to return a better more experienced player. If I were Owen Coyle, I'd think about recalling him and sending him somewhere else; nine minutes football (and a good nine minutes) in 20 days is not going to help him or, unfortunately, us.

I'm confused as to why people are so shocked that Sampson didn't start on Saturday. He played 10 minutes of football and is 18 AND as Sturrock isn't in a rush to sign him, he probably is going to sign a longer loan deal. He also wanted to bring him on earlier but couldn't due to an injury to Kalala. But ohwell I guess that means Sturrock is a clueless, hoof ball merchant who has somehow by luck got us to the top of the league. LOL.

If you're not going to play him, why sign him even temporarily? Bolton are probably just as narked off and as Mick said, it wouldn't suprise me if they recalled him and loaned him out to a club that will give him first team football.

But maybe they agreed verbally that the loan spell would be for the remainder of the season but kept the paperwork short for other reasons. All players have to learn that they earn first team places and are not just gifted them; perhaps Luggy is showing Sampson that throughout his career (and I suspect it will be successful) you have to wait your turn then grab and keep your place.
We have also seen in the past that playing loanees just because we have them, has not always been the best for the team.

Depends what is in the loan deal agreement.
I would say that some managers loan players out not JUST for first team experience but also to experience lower league football. It's all experience isn't it. Even if he doesn't play every game, he is still learning.

Whilst I agree that he does look to be very good. Maybe it wasn't the right game.

If he was played and was poor, everyone would be saying what a poor decision it was to play him. Let's cut the grief. Give sturrock some credit for once. He has brought him to the club for a start, and I expect him to start with Big Dicko on the weekend!

Sturrock isn't in a rush to sign him ??? Sturrock has no chance whatsoever of signing him permanently. He is a current England U19 International and will probably change hands for millions in the future.

We may not have got to the top of the League by luck, but too many decisions like the ones he made Saturday and we won't be staying there very long.

Not really, clubs don't just loan out players to get them minutes on the pitch (although that's the main thing). Owen Coyle will appreciate why Sampson isn't starting (or didn't come off the bench on Sat), and Sampson will be learning and benefiting in other ways. I'm sure Sampson's chance will come, and fingers crossed he'll take it.

Often players at PL clubs have a heightened sense of entitlement, and expect to walk in and own the place (a la Kerrea Gilbert, maybe even Sanchez Watt), and they may also be dismissive of the level of quality in this division, and they have a bit of a culture shock. Sanchez Watt was rubbish for us but I saw him a few weeks ago for Sheffield Wednesday and he looked a different player (and he also had a good spell at Leeds), so Watt no doubt benefited from his experience with us even if he didn't perform great on the pitch.

Yes, maybe he will start but we've missed a great opportunity. Shrewsbury were there for the taking. What a boost to our confidence being the first team to win there and putting three points between us and the opposition.

Do you have selective sentence syndrome? Jesus.
I said, 'he probably is going to sign a longer loan deal'.
What 'mistake' are you referring to? That he didn't just put in a loan player in straight away? That he played Benyon who we've signed for money? We wont be staying there for very long? Are you having a laugh. Because we don't play an 18 year old loan player who has only featured once? In case you have forgotten we have won a lot of games without Jack Sampson this year.

Get a grip chaps.

EDIT - Yes, we definitely did miss an opportunity, but is that down to not playing Jack Sampson? NO.

Were you at Shrewsbury ? Did you see how close Dicko was to being sent off ? Did you notice he couldn't put a challenge in for the last 20 minutes? All that was to teach Sampson a valuable life lesson ? How many current England Internationals have we played to the detriment of the team in the past ?

In case you missed Kalala, was injured this is why we took him off.
We then shuffled the back four to suit us pushing Mohsni further up the pitch.

I actually would prefer to have Mohsni on in this situation (rather than Sampson) as he causes so much mayhem and gets in good areas.

For the record and incase of seeming like I have some kind of hatred to Sampson, I DO NOT. I think he will score some important goals this season, I hope he starts on the weekend, and I hope we can sign him on an extended loan deal!
