Breaking News Jack Sampson signs on loan

@SUFCRootsHall
-------------------
Southend United have today completed the loan signing of striker Jack Sampson from Bolton Wanderers for an initial one month period.

Goodness me, is there enough space in the changing rooms for anymore players!

Whilst I welcome the addition of new players, I will point out the obvious - this is a loan player - and whilst we may benefit from a goal or two, the main loser in the long term is the lower league clubs who have far fewer opportunities to develop and sell on maturing players.

And he is not, to my mind, a "premiership player" - but an 18 year old lad who is in the reserves ....... just like a couple of loan players we tried last season (and are now in the 4th division?).

But I wish him all the best whilst he is with us - it is not his fault that the loan system is out of control ..........

Makes you wonder if we're preparing for the exit of Hall. With so many forwards on the books now maybe it'll take at least two of them to replace him. Hope not though.

It makes you wonder that because you seem to be obsessed by the idea of us selling players.

Someone like Sampson is a great option. I doubt Bolton will be expecting him to play every game at his age and he'll be costing us either nothing or next to nothing. Just hope he's any good.

Looks like a great signing to me - especially given how highly rated he is - before he signed his 1st pro contract at Bolton he was allegedly a target for Man Ure Man City and Liverpool. At the beginning of this season, according to Sky, a number of Championship clubs were chasing him for a season long loan - including Middlesborough and Barnsley. Even in January there were a number of League 1 and 2 clubs chasing him.

Although we have a few strikers on the books at the moment, Dickinson is our only fit target man. Therefore when he gets tired we have no option other than to leave him on or change the style of play.

My guess is Sampson will be on the bench on Saturday and will come on for Dicko for the last 20 minutes or so.

Presumably at his age, Bolton will be happy for him to be getting experience in and around the first team and to get further advice from a quality old pro like Neil Harris.

Good luck to the lad - for so many clubs to be interested in him there must be something about him. Well done Luggy, Tara and Ron for attracting him too, in the face of such opposition.

Luggy loves a target man. Can you play two target men in the same team though? It could get confusing having two targets if so.

I disagree; this is the element of loan signings which I think serves the game well. A young, English player getting League experience and benefitting a lower League club too, hopefully.

I don't think the players we had on loan last season had (or are likely to get) international recognition. I do think this is one of our more exciting signings. It's only a month, but if it goes well I suspect it could be extended.

I agree with Mick, this is the sort of signing that the loan system is there for. We need an extra, cheap, body to cover for Dickinson and Bolton want one of their young players to get first team experience in the League. Everyone wins.

Blimey, compared to Blue79 even Mick is coming across as very upbeat.

Last loan signing with international recognition - would that have been Scott Malone the season before last?

Was saying on Monday that the first priority was to sign a target man to either replace or fill in for Dickinson as we have been lacking in this area so in theory I am delighted with this signing. Lets hope he can have the impact that Robson-Kanu had when he signed, the last 18 year old signed from a Premier club I believe.

After these 4 signings in the window, I am certainly more confident than before that we can get over the line.

Sturrock delighted to bring in Sampson

SOUTHEND United manager Paul Sturrock is delighted to have brought in Bolton Wanderers forward Jack Sampson on loan.

Yes, I was excited about this loan signing, but at Shrewsbury yesterday I was absolutely staggered by Sturrock's failure to involve him. Is he stubborn or stupid? Apart from the fact I would have started him instead of the lightweight and ineffective Benyon (1 League goal in the last 12 months and none since February last year), his failure to take off Dickenson after the bad head injury to the Shrews player was ridiculous. It was obvious to everyone there that he was just one tackle away from a red card and could not play anything like his normal game.

So our potentially best loan signing for ages gets 9 minutes football in virtually three weeks of his four week loan. Madness.
