Is Phil Brown the right man for the job?

I cannot believe so many have voted no. Im not sure what is expected, considering the restraints he is working under. Quality and consistency costs and we cannot buy, most good players are already at clubs and will have contracts so he is making the best of what he has. At the start of the season the bookies had us down to be nearer to a relegation struggle than one for promotion and in this context he has done pretty well up to now and although I'm not convinced promotion will be there for us this year, I don't think we will be far off.

This thread is originally from March last year when Sturrock was sacked.

I'm glad Brown is in charge, especially as he's got us playing some lovely football at times. I wasn't a big fan of the appointment at all and I thought Sturrock was very harshly treated especially just a couple of weeks before a Wembley final. While I don't agree with how it was done I am now in no doubt that Brown is the right man for the job.

Having said that though I have huge respect and appreciation for the job Sturrock did down here, with just a handful of players on arrival we could have easily slipped into the Conference that season under a manager who didn't have the wealth of contacts and knowledge that Sturrock had. He steadied the ship and then accumulated the most points we ever achieved in our history during that second season - with only a dodgy set of floodlights ultimately costing us promotion. To take us to Wembley for the first time in his final year was a huge achievement too and he deserved to lead us in that - Ron made a complete mess of that one.

To sum up though both Sturrock (even though he couldn't get us up) and Brown have been excellent appointments by Martin, you can't really fault him for either.....

Even some Millwall fans saying what a good manager Phil Brown is.I think we are lucky to have him to be honest, dont know how long we can keep him though, hopefully long enough for him to take us all the way to the premiershite division.

As a paid up member of the "I don't think Brown is the right man for us (too full of himself, media animal etc)" at the end of last season, I also said we needed to give him six months to bring in his own players and get his style of play ingrained into the players. Not full of hope but more trepidation I sat back and waited.
Early signs were unconvincing but as weeks rolled on I started to enjoy watching the boys again. My Season Card was becoming a thing of pleasure and not an unwanted family member i had to go and see every Saturday. Ups and Downs followed but a spirit and a way of playing that was pleasing to the eye emerged, a will to win, a desire not to lose, a never say die attitude with fierce tackling and a squad fitter than any i can remember.
So we beat a poor Millwall team, so what ! , what I say is how we played as a team in terrible conditions, a willingness to pass the ball rather than using route one, a desire to win,a team spirit that shows all for one and one for all.
Gone are the Mohsni episodes with the squad, Gone are the dreary boring games we put up with for so long.

Welcome Phil Brown, keep your media jobs going, keep the tanning lotion topped up, keep that funny accent going, because for this 47 year old Shrimper, THERE'S A SMILE BACK ON MY FACE .:smile::smile::smile::smile::smile::smile::smile::smile::smile:

Like it or not, we have Paul Sturrock to thank for the Orangatango one being at Roots Hall. Had he not have brought in those players, stopped a rot and given the fans the belief that we can again get out of the basement division we would never in a month of sundays had been able to attract Brown.

I know he would've taken ANY job at the point of coming to us, but would he have fancied a low end conference/mid table conference south team?

I doubt that very much.

Not sure if he would have gone to many other League 2 clubs. I'm sure that RM having tried to get him before was a big help.

Yeah why would he go to any other League Two club when he can come to one thats crippled with embargos :dim:

Im sure he would have had an easier time of things at quite a few clubs at this level and would have been grateful just to get back in the game.

Don't agree. We were a struggling team when PB joined - and continued to struggle for the remainder of the season. Our attendances were falling and to be honest, if it was not for Wembley, there would have been a far greater air of despondency and despair. A huge thank you to Luggy for Wembley. However, he failed (under difficult circumstances) to gain promotion and we were losing support by the droves as his tactics were the dullest in more than 40 years of attending Roots Hall. I would accept the pitiful "football" only if it led to promotion and it did not. Did anyone enjoy going to see Southend United under PS?? I found it appalling and depressing.
There was only Wembley as any positive when PB took over.

Now, with plenty of Luggy players, we play far more attractive football and in my opinion have a much better team spirit. There are still many challenges but we are in far better shape than we ever were under Mr Sturrock.

Phil is now the tenth longest serving manager in English leagues; just over 4 years and 150+ days at the helm of The Hall.
(Arsene is No.1 & approaching 21 years.)
The only managers in Div 1 at present with same club for more than Phil are Ardley at Wimbledon and Hill at Rochdale - both approaching 5 years.

Well done Phil, and well done Ron for backing him; stability and loyalty are often under rated AND while we may not be "pulling up trees" so far this campaign we are not boring or stuck in mire.

Brown has done a good job and he deserves time now. He's improved our league position every season and got us back into L1 so I have no complaints. I'm worried about the defence and PB/GC have to sort that quickly because team selection is all wrong at the moment. Opinions can change over time but - for now at least - I still think Brown is the right man for the job.
