Interesting story in the Echo for all you Flavs bashers

Going back to the mid sixties we have been blessed with more than our fair share of good keepers, starting with the welsh international Trevor Roberts who so tragically died at such a young age. I have witnessed every keeper from Trevor onwards and accepting that supporters of different generations will always have their favourite, in my opinion Melvyn Cawston was the best i have seen.

If you're going to tell us who's the best Southend 'keeper you've seen, then at least get his name right!

I think he will always be my favourite, but I don't think he was the best. I do remember him in our Div 4 Championship season going 985 mins without letting in a goal at home. (In fact we only let in 6 at home all season.) I also remember his reaction when someone finally scored; he took off his gloves, threw them down and sat down against a post and sulked! That will stay with me for ever.

I remember it well, against Hereford United in the FA Cup, we murdered them 0-1 !!!

Can't think of many other games where a keeper has saved two penalties (excluding penalty shoot outs). I vaguely remember Sammy saving two in a game during our promotion season 89/90.

I remember a game V Charlton in 1991 when Dean Austin scored a penalty to end our run of 7 consecutive misses! Then Charlton were awarded two penalties and missed them both! (only one was a save I think)

What a way to celebrate. I've had my doubts over the years but I'm convinced his shot stopping heroics have balanced out his crossing/lobbing faux pas over the years. I hope he beats the record (as I'm gutted that Kev won't beat the overall one!).

How many clean sheets has Daryl kept for us I wonder?

Some one out there must have a top ten list..

I am one of those who has had their doubts about Flavs, and I still feel Collis was a bit unlucky to be dropped when he was, but I am delighted that things are going so well for Flavs now.
I think most people on here are happy to be proved wrong when its to the benefit of our beloved SUFC.
What I think hacks off many of us though is those handful of posters who give the impression they are just waiting for us to lose or certain players to have a bad game so that they can come on here and say 'told you so'.
