Interesting story in the Echo for all you Flavs bashers

Come on, accept it, he's the best ever and your beloved Collis will always play in the Essex Senior Egg Cup!

Flavs is a good keeper and doesn't deserve the stick he gets on here at times.

He's no Roycie though.

Harry Threadgold would have played more games for us but he had trouble with the new floodlights that affected his vision. Damn the new technology.

Blinded by the lights....think it's a song

Flahavan can be rightfully proud of his achievements between the sticks for us and keep the clean sheets going hoepfully.

Wouldnot lace the boots on Mervyn Cawston, one of Southends finest between the sticks

Yes have to agree with that one! Cawston was a great all round keeper, dominated his area, came and caught, rarely punched the ball, a big physical frame but very agile, for those old enough to remember in the Pat Jennings & Phil Parks mould, another keeper I liked was Neil Freeman, same sort of build as Merv but not as popular with Blues fan's at the time as
he follwed Merv in to the side and was always subject to comparison and from memory picked up a few injurys in his time, I think Flav's a fantastic reflex keeper but I don't think you can beat having a keeper with physical presence who can claim the area as his own, especially the higher level you go, also a great advantage to have when defending corners, of course we have not had any problems in that department this season have we!

Sorry wiggles if you seriously think that Flavs is our best keeper ever you seriously need your head read. Better than Cawston, Sansome, Stannard, Roberts, etc etc I don't think so.

Going back to the mid sixties we have been blessed with more than our fair share of good keepers, starting with the welsh international Trevor Roberts who so tragically died at such a young age. I have witnessed every keeper from Trevor onwards and accepting that supporters of different generations will always have their favourite, in my opinion Melvyn Cawston was the best i have seen.

Hear, hear Tony.

I knew this already because it was on the OS at the beginning of the seasons
he would have made the record if he didnt get injured at the beginning of the season
anyway,
Well done darryl :)
You deserve it

we've had some good keepers. I agree Mervyn Cawston was one of them as was Trevor Roberts. However Flavs is a decent keeper and his record is one to be proud of. Well done Flavs.
BTW he holds the record for clean sheets behind what some consider a dodgy defence. Better than Roycie, better than Sansome who played more games. That in my view makes him a very decent keeper indeed.

Flavs kept more clean sheets because Royce played a fraction of the games before he was snapped by a Premiership club.

And we were playing at a higher level when Royce (and to some extent Sammy) were her.

The level you play at is irrelevant when it comes to clean sheets, surely better strikers should be balanced by better defenders? That said, Roycie was truly incredible for a couple of seasons, and would be in my All Time Blues XI. Flavs has been a great servant, and like Roycie, has won us games we had no right to win. Sammy was a gent and a Blues legend, but would be behind both in terms of talent, but that's just my opinion.

Merv Cawston was custodian when I first started watching the Blues in 1980, and young as I was, I remember him being very solid and commanding of his area. I thought Andy Woodman did well in his brief time here, and Bart Griemink never let us down in the few games he played.

Sammy was in goal when I first started coming to Roots Hall but whilst I remember him being a good keeper, it seems like such a long time ago now that I don't really like to judge him.

Royce, though, was simply incredible. Particularly in the 95/96 season when he almost single-handedly got us a Play-Off spot. He was as agile as Flavs but was a better all-round keeper even if his kicking was very poor.

I've always rated Flavs and as I said I think he takes an awful lot of stick for being 'just a shot-stopper' when even England have found that finding a goalkeeper who can command his area AND make brilliant reflex saves isn't easy. But he's not in the same class as Roycie.

Agree 100%. He was also fantastic the next year despite playing behind a comedy defence.

Was nodding in agreement till i came to the bit about Woody and Bart!

of course the level you play at is relevant otherwise there would be no divisions...der, daryl is a good keeper at this level but no one can deny he looked like a midget numpty in the ccc.

I have to disagree......Trevor Roberts was the best IMO nobody has surpassed him....But DF is close..

Ray White was outstanding as was Sean Rafter.

I have moaned about flavs in the past but you have got to give to the guy, he pulled it out of the bag on a big day for him and a shame defence let him down and he couldn't keep clean sheet
