I'm gutted but to be honest I travelled to the game in hope rather than expectation. The Crewe side we faced last night was significantly better than the one we beat 1-0 during the regular season, and with the exception of Swindon I don't think I've seen a better performance by a visiting team this season.

This morning tetchy and irritable. I have to say that when I was checking the availability and prices for flights back to see the Final, I never really believed that it was going to happen. However, the fact that I didn't believe we were going to win, hasn't made the pain of defeat that much less. It's been a roller coaster of a season which I have enjoyed, even allowing for the bitter pill from yesterday. I prefer that to a season of mediocracy, where we end up mid table, with nothing to play for in the last couple of months.
I do have a fear that the close season will also have its fair share of ups and downs and I am preparing myself to face the, shocks, surprises and disappointments with equanimity.

Was very disappointed last night but in the grand scheme of things we are all still alive and healthy.

Back to the Hall next season then.

Wonder if we could put in a request to have Morecambe and Fleetwood away on a Saturday and following Tuesday? Would be a cracking short break!

In all seriousness, time moves on and hurt heals. We spent the season in and around the automatics for pretty much of the time, we finished 4th in the division and failed to win promotion via the play offs. I'd far rather have that disappointment than be looking at destinations in the Conference like Hereford and Macclesfield, or wondering if we'd even have a club like Portsmouth!

Must say that I went to the second leg with the gut feeling that we weren't going to make it, so I had steadied myself for the worst and was not at all surprised when we failed to win. Make no mistake, Crewe are a very good team and I for one, would rather lose to them than the likes of a team like the Creepies. Speaking of which, at least we will have the pleasure next season of meeting up with our old friend, the pig with lipstick who now manages the not so Merry Millers.
So, enjoy the close season, forget about the past and look forward to next season when to be sure it will be another roller coaster. As you know Southend don't do boring or easy! UTB

Could not agree more.

Time's a great healer. Let's forget about Freddy's shot hitting the inside of the post and not going into the net..... and even forgot those damned Aldershot floodlights. It's actually been a good season, but with a hole in the middle when we lost form. Let's hope Paul Sturrock realises that we played better in the second half of Wednesday's match because he changed the personnel and tactics, and keep to that next season. Having got rid of Swindon and Shrewsbury and with little to fear from the relegated outfits, League Two looks easier next year - although Bristol Rovers should do better, and Fleetwood will mac a difference........

Really? I am sure that Chesterfield will be there or thereabouts as will Wycombe, who yo-yo back and forthe between Leagues 1 & 2. Quite right about Bristol Rovers, plus there's Oxford & Rotherham with the fat crook Evans in charge appear to have money to spend. Then there's Northampton managed by Hoofroyd. I'm not sure about Fleetwood they may have money to spend as it's rumoured that Vardy will sign for Leiceser for £1 million +.

IMO this division will be tougher next season.

Think you're right mate.
Depending on who we keep and/or buy , and assuming Sturrock tries to play the way we did in the last few months , when we put together some good performances and results , I think we will be in the mix , but people shouldn't assume that because we came 4th , we will run away with it next season.
I think there will be 5-10 teams capable of promotion

Its a football match!!

Hardly important in the overall scheme of things is it?

If you are depressed after this then you need to get a life!!:winking:

I'm merely adding this huge disappointment to the other few hundred I've had in my 50 odd years of suffering our great team. Get over it everyone and move on. COYBB for next season.

Not actually as gutted as I thought I'd be. Maybe because my expectations are so low after all these years, maybe because I'm old enough to realise there are worse things in the world. Disappointing yes, end of the world no. Plus it's more fun to be in the promotion race in L2 than battling relegation in L1 which I think we would have been if we'd gone up. Maybe another year building a stronger squad isn't such a bad thing in the long run.
