But why single Sturrock out? Nearly the whole team has been shocking one week and excellent the next. If we were going on recent performances then Mohsni would not have even been on the coach yesterday.

There is only one reason why he is getting picked on, and that is because he has a stupid pony tail! I mean because his Dad is the manager.

He's being singled out because he seems to be a special case. Zaaboub, Prosser, Bouzid, Paterson, Coughlan, Soares, Hall, Spencer have all been dropped after a bad game or two. Bilel could also have been dropped, but is a special case. Has immense potential, but needs to play to fulfil it.
Surely even you can see that if we get a deadly sharp striker in (It could be Jarvis), then he should partner Corr. What's the betting that it's Blair Sturrock?

The manager will say , to justify his selection, that yesterday he made one goal and scored another.

Sturrock 6.5 - Comical goal and an assist, apart from that, offered very little once again

Alot has been said about Blair Sturrock, which was to be expected considering the relationship to the manager. And when he plays, I support him like any other player in a Southend shirt. Now I've been to plenty of games this term, from pre season to now, And with all honesty, the only attribute he seems to have, is a great first touch. I'm sorry, but you need more than that. I've seen and heard people say he has great hold up play. No he doesn't! Lost count the amount of times he's lost the ball, been out muscled or not even get close to winning a header. I agree a strikers role isn't to JUST score goals, but there are plenty of forwards who do AND help their team in a variety of ways.
Spencer for example (who shockingly is being sent out on loan) was the one of few bright sparks we had towards the end of last season. He'll get you goals AND work hard! Not only that, defenders hate strikers like Screech. Non stop, on their case, chasing for the ball, causing havoc. We need his energy up top with Corr who does amazing work on knockdowns and holding the ball up.

Why was the goal comical? It showed the kind of persistence that you rightly rate in Spencer, a player who began well for us but who rarely got a start, even under Tilson (and before you mention it, I know he was injured for a while, but 5 starts from January to the end of the season is not a lot). Sturrock is a hard working player. He is not perfect but I don't think that we will command perfection in our parlous financial state and lowly league position. Get off his back and celebrate a performance that ultimately won us the match.

This isn't another post just to bash Blair, in fact none of mine are, but honest opinions on his performance.

But the goal was comical because he was through on goal 2/3 yards ahead of the defence he went to shoot and tripped on the ball, the keeper then cleared it against him, giving him the fortunate second oportunity to roll it into the empty net, even Sturrock's celebration was to hide his face in his hands in mock ebarrassment, he did well to be in the right place at the right time, but the execution of the goal was comical. Having seen it again on tele confirms this. Perhaps you've not seen it yet?

You see it rather differently to me and if you think the keeper touched the ball during the build up to this goal then you need to wipe the sleep from your eyes. The defender tracking back makes a good block on the ball just as Sturrock is about to shoot, that's what causes him to trip.

The fact you asked why the goal was comical tells me you didn't see it! Blair himself was embarrassed, as everyone who has eyes could see from his celebration.

Did you read Paul Sturrock's comments from the Q&A? He said that to get promotion from this division you need two things - centre-backs who can head the ball and to be able to hold the ball up up front. This is why someone like Scott Spencer isn't going to get a look in under Sturrock's footballing philosophy. Spencer is a goalscorer but when he's not scoring goals he won't be contributing much and will be losing the ball more than holding it up. The 'back-to-goal' play that you've been criticising from our forwards this season is exactly what the Manager is looking for, rightly or wrongly.

If Sturrock can bring in a goalscoring little man who also contributes outside of the six yard box then I'm sure that he'll get a chance alongside Barry Corr. Until then I expect Blair to play pretty much every week.

I think most people now expect this until his dad is no longer in charge of this club...

His Dad isn't an idiot - he's a very successful lower league manager and it's ridiculous to think that he plays Blair simply because he's his Son. He plays him because right now he's the best option for the way that he wants the team to play. When that changes then he'll stop playing.

What is everyones problem with Blair.

A striker who set up one and scored one. I would take the every week!!

He works very hard, and at this rate he will be driven out like those before him.

He is a second striker, which means if he can get 10-12 goals, he has had a great season, which he is on for.

I have eyes, thank you very much. I saw it the same way as Gremlin. His celebration with Ryan Hall could be taken a number of ways. He got in a great position, the defender got in a block but he stuck with it. I am getting really, really bored with every thread being hijacked by anti-Blair comments no matter what his contribution is to a game. People seem to latch onto one player and see nothing but their faults whilst appearing absolutely blind to the failings of anyone else. In recent years it's been Revell, Betsy, Mildenhall, Macca etc etc.. The players on the bench become the best thing since Pele and everyone's a selection expert. In the case of Blair, he takes the flack because he is the manager's son so he's an easy target. It's no wonder that so many players struggle here but go on to do well elsewhere. Obviously, this website is about opinion, and I know I've done it myself at times, but for goodness sake change the record.....

Certain people might say the same about all the defenders of BS' "talents".
He's not the best thing since sliced bread as you all would have us believe.
As I said elsewhere today (with regards to another common argument on here), maybe reality actually lies somewhere between the two opposing opinions...

I've taken the unusual step of quoting my own post - I don't say anywhere that he is the "best thing since sliced bread." I haven't read anyone else who has defended him saying that either. Just give him a fair crack of the whip. He is a reasonable striker for where we are. He has had some good games and some less effective games but he is giving us decent service in a team that hasn't had a chance to really gel yet. He doesn't deserve the obsessive negative focus that many of you are giving him. That is all.

I think that it may be a bit like 'do you really wanna be mates with the Head Boy?' syndrome. There is a natural suspicion of him amongst some of our fans because of the way Tilly was supplanted and because Daddy rode into town (or a 'Holiday Inn' not far away, cf. Porterman's reports) the same day. However, he seems an honest toiler - apart from the dramatic forward rolls every time he got bumped by the big Hereford lummox marking him - and he has a good eye and delivery for a pass/cross. He tries to hold the ball up and bring the midfielders into play which, as others have said, Daddy wants and why he will more than likely be picked ahead of others currently.
