It’s time to talk about matters on the pitch again as the first team squad will make the short journey east of the training ground on Saturday afternoon to Burroughs Park, home of last season’s beaten FA Vase finalists, Great Wakering Rovers who ply their trade in the Essex Senior League, 4 levels below the Blues.

Undoubtedly Kev will say that games like this are primarily about fitness however sometimes they can uncover a promising trialist (who can forget Ryan Leonard’s trial game at GWR?) and are an opportunity for fans to cast their “expert” eyes on any new signings.

The squad are currently down to just one professional goalkeeper, so we may well see a trialist or youth keeper on display. With the permanent signing of Joe Gubbins there are plenty of options in defence for Kev to switch things around.

The midfield is looking a little light in numbers with the rumoured departure of Wes Fonguck and Noor Husin still recovering from his operation, so again perhaps there are opportunities for a trialist or youth team player to impress.

New signing Josh Walker will I’m sure want to make his mark early up front and it will be interesting to see what combinations of strikers are tried out.

For those wishing to attend, payment shpild be made at the turnstiles on the day. There are no tickets available beforehand.

Adults £10
Concessions £6
Kids 12-16 £2
Under 12 £1

If you’re free, get yourself down there to cheer on Kev and the boys in (hopefully) the first game of the new era.

If you have any thoughts on starting line ups, tip offs about potential trialists etc. this is the thread to share your thoughts.

Apparently there is no parking at Wakerings ground on Saturday parking at the club for players and officials only plus Wakering rec not open for parking so it’s the high street and side roads around

So are they not opening the field as per usual

No offence to Great Wakering as they are a great little club but I do get fed up with playing them every pre season, be nice to mix it up a bit

Well they’ll never play Southend manor at that ground again, not after the incident involving Gary jones, they got well upset over that one😂😂😂😂

I had Gary Jones staying with me at that stage and his ankle swelled up very badly that night and it was a shame as liked that away game. Gary was a good example why it is sometimes it is best to sign quite local lads as he never settled down South so we did not see the best of him really.

A real shame that happened though for several reasons including I liked that ‘away’ game as I could walk to it.

I played in this game as well for manor, think it was a guy called Carl Richardson that challenged him that evening, was a fair good tackle, ref never gave a free kick or anything but the Southend bench went mad as it was a strong challenge, never forget it, that was the last Southend manor v Southend United friendly I think.

Gary still loves the club, he regularly comments on Linkedin posts about ex players etc. In fact, how about a SZ special interview?

Thought Luis Shamshoum was great in the run up to Wembley (maybe not so much on the actual day but hey ho)

Do hate parking there I must admit. Just over an hours walk for me, can't really do it with the kids!
