Blancmange supported by Steven Mallinder (ex Cabaret Voltaire) at the Wardrobe, Leeds

Another gig originally scheduled for winter 2020 when we all thought everything would be back to normal by then, but of course it wasn't!

The gig was at The Wardrobe, a great little venue in Leeds. It is just under 15 minutes walk from the station and I guess it holds around 300 people. I'd seen Wreckless Eric and Martin Stephenson and The Daintees there pre pandemic.

Many comedians use The Wardrobe for their pre tour warm-up gigs. So you could have seen the likes of Catherine Ryan and James Acaster back in the autumn for as little as a tenner.

Support was provided by ex Cabaret Voltaire founder, Stephen Mallinder. I'd never heard any of the Cabs stuff, as no one calls them. But I did enjoy the 30 minute set of throbbing industrial synth music. Mallinder was happy to chat with me outside the venue while his bandmate was having a cigarette.

For those of us with long memories, Blancmange burst onto the pop scene in the early 80s and their biggest hit was the 'classic' Living On The Ceiling, which I seem to remember getting as free flexi disc copy from Sounds.

Although, they were originally a duo, the group is now vocalist Neil Arthur backed by a couple of session musicians.

They played all the hits with LOTC as the obvious encore. But I also really liked Some Days These from their latest album and it is well worth a listen on Youtube or Spotify.

I have enjoyed all three of The Wardrobe gigs. They are cheap to get in, £25 to £30 and if it finishes around 22:30 I can be home in 40 minutes!

For those of you who enjoy a local gig I have hired the Mill Hall Rayleigh for 12 May and have booked American singer songwriter Dean Friedman- he is a brilliant musician and storyteller and well worth seeing. Tickets are available from http://bit.ly/3wPVtpO

My son is heading off to see They Might be Giants at the Roundhouse in Camden too
I was going to get tickets for that. Only to realise it coincides with my daughter's 3rd birthday weekend. So rather than watch TMBG play 'Flood' in it's entirety, I will probably be playing pass the parcel with some toddlers.....
