General betting

Time of first result would be a good shout. We've been told that the ballot boxes need to be at the count before 10.30 which means once we shut up after 10, the head Clerk will probably go directly there, leaving the clerks to clear up the mess.

I can see a first result before 11pm, especially with the smaller constiuencies.

One of the Sunderland seats is normally first to declare.

We were betting on that, but have suspended betting as Sunderland South (I think) was backed off the boards.

Yeah their counters are actually sent around the round to help in other countries elections they are so good (think that was on Radio 4 ??).

Someone claimed the result might be delayed till late on friday due to expected turn out ? We can but hope !

I think the sitting MP is Chris Mullin(s). It was definitely first to declare in 2005. Basildon used to be quite an early one. They declared early in 1992 when Amess retained the seat and it quickly became apparent that Kinnock had lost.

He is stepping down in this election; his book about his time as an MP in the New Labour era, "A View From The Foothills" is next on my reading list.

He's not be confused with thr erstwhile Golden State Warrior of the same name though.

Next Labour Leader
David Milliband 11/8
Ed Milliband 7/1
Alan Johnson 7/1
Harriet Harman 8/1
Peter Mandelson 10/1
Alistair Darling 12/1

I reckon Harriet Harman at 8/1 isn't the worst shout as a sort of not particularly safe, safe pair of hands.

I had James Purnell down as my tip for long-term Labour leader, but he's leaving politics.

Not a bad shout that; I quite like Alan Johnson as he could campaign as someone who will bring Labour back to its roots. Incidentally, there has been a bit of a move on David Miliband:

David Miliband 11/10
Ed Miliband 8/1

Peter Mandelson 12/1
