Memory Lane Favourite Southend landmark - past or present.

I liked the gasworks jetty and was gutted when it was demolished.

some friends of ours make VERY low budget films and we once used the gasworks jetty for a scene involving baraclava's, (plastic) guns, fighting the lot, in broad daylight. We attracted quite a crowd on the seafront and I still cannot believe we got away with it

Has it gone now Cyril? I heard rumours recently that it now has planning for a restaurant by Perry from Robert Leonard who are building the Hotel Opposite.

Oh that is odd then..:stunned:

I remember when the gas works was there and the bridge went overhead across the road as they loaded coal off the boats

I too heard about a possible renovation but I think it failed safety checks and so was torn down.

Never Never Land

I loved going to "Never Never Land" down on the cliffs at the bottom of pier hill. What a fantasy place that was at night, and great to take a young lady, but unfortunately it lived up to its name. :nope:  ;)

Does anyone remember the slot racing cars just pass the kursaal upstairs above a penny arcade !! and just pass that peculiar shop that sold dodgey cine films and what the butler saw machines !!

Come into this thread very late on in the day so I think most have been mentioned - Planters was a big favourite, you could smell the coffee way before you could see the shop, and the old Tomassi's on the opposite side of the road to where it is now, which used to have a downstairs cellar restaurant and Cotgroves Restaurant next door. Used to frequent both Zhivagos and Penny Farthings as well.

The old open air swimming pool at Westcliff - now the casino - just about remember it, but was already well on the way out with the opening of Warrior Square. The Kursaal fun park, with the old rides - the wooden roller coaster! The Bembridge at Leigh, Chalkwell shelter, the Crowstone, the boating lake at the pier, Never Never Land and the illuminations that actually DID use to rival Blackpool a little, the beach huts at both Thorpe Bay and Shoebury East beaches, Rosehills, the ABC, Ritz and the old Odeon. Loads of places and loads of memories.

Oh and btw, my husband used to work the doughnut kiosk back in the late 70s along near the Foresters.

The old Cannon cinema in Westcliff where Halfords is now. I don't know how big it actually was, but to my childhood self it seemed to hold about 20 thousand people.

I think I remember it when it was the Essoldo before that! Saturday morning picture club, cost some entirely insignificant amount of money back then like 15p or something - in fact, may have even been a shilling!:'(

Yes it was above Wonderland ....they also had one at the bottom of Hamlet Court Road for awhile.

Haunted House at Peter Pan's playground, man that was terrible but it didn't stop me going on it loads of times when I was down there as a kid.

The Alpha 2 (now Chinnerys) , Roller City, East Beach Shoebury--- for late night love, Roller skating rink on Pier Hill, the Cliffs opposite the open-air swimming pool--- for teenage lust, the old Blue Boar--- massive bars and first place I ever got drunk, Fairfax youth club--- hardest boys in town.

Or as it was originally called. The Intercon..which I always thought was a rather peculier name .It was attached to The Beer Keller next door where I saw Gary Glitter play a few times to the local kids.....That is a worry in itself now ..

The Old Talza Market for me and the Boating lake on the seafront.

It was the Intercon, I remember we got involved in a massive punch up in there one Saturday night. Used to love the old Talza Arcade.

The bait shop was Called "Goings".The Toy shop was half way up the high street from Pier Hill on the Left ..But the name escapes me at the moment ...wasn't it the Original "Argosy Toys " before thy moved to estcliff?

I am sure the toy shop was Bermans, Argosy have been in Westcliff for as long as I can remember.

I worked there long enough ..it was originally The Penny Farthing but went through many name changes including the ones you said ...but also the Zodiac club

Penny night on a Monday, great memories.

Anyone rember the original Dixons store where WH Smiths is now?

Dixons was a regular meeting spot for your Saturday night dates, and you could take the p*ss out of those who had been stood up until it happened to you.:'(

Bermans was the one which is now the pub isnt it....next door to the wargaming shop whatever its called, where strange men play with their small soldiers....:stunned:

Bermans used to have that old bloke who used to follow you round the store insisting that even tho you were indeed ONLY browsing, he could offer you some help regardless.....:D
