Memory Lane Favourite Southend landmark - past or present.

Bermans was the one which is now the pub isnt it....next door to the wargaming shop whatever its called, where strange men play with their small soldiers....:stunned:

Bermans used to have that old bloke who used to follow you round the store insisting that even tho you were indeed ONLY browsing, he could offer you some help regardless.....:D

Yes you are right. Talking about being stalked in stores, there used to be a mens shop in the High Street, and the manager was an old gentleman of four bt twoish persuasion. You could go in there buy a handkerchief and his stock response would be "Would you like a nice suit to go with it".

Surprised there has been no mention of the statue of Queen Victoria which used to sit at the top of Pier Hill. For many years her hand had been broken off, is the statue still along the sea front?

The statue is now along Clifftown Parade..That Men's shop was on the corner of Clarence Road but the name of it escapes me ....I do remember Brent and Collins of course which changed it's name to Take 6 I think at some point.

What was the computer shop in the precinct with the yellow sign round the corner from Estuary? I used to buy my Acorn Electron games in there.

That is really going to bug me now B ...I know it began with the letter C ..and they became a wholesale computer game place in Basildon for awhile.

Estuary used to be a couple of doors along from the Spread did it not before that estate agents expanded....or thereabouts anyway.

The mens shop was Peter Browns.
Blimey, Brent & Cillins, didn't Take 6 eventually become Harry Fentons?

Was it not Software Plus?

I spent most of my childhood in Software Plus buying the "latest" games for my Amstrad 464.

The thing i miss most is the old Esplanade pub/club on the seafront. Saturday nights after footy spent in "the cage" dancing to quality choons and drinking Newkie Broon. It was plastic glasses only but you could have a hefty bottle of NB no problem! I have witnessed people buy bottles of the stuff in there soley to hit people over the head with without even drinking the contents. :punch:

My dad was best mates with the chap who owned "Goings" tackle shop so we used to get all our bait free when we went fishing as kids

Prestos next to the old odeon, also the old odeon, the ABC and the classic. I remember queueing at 10am to watch Ghostbusters and was 2nd in the queue, only for a fight to break out 10 minutes before the door opens due to people pushing in and I was nearly the last one through the doors. Made up for it by hiding in there for the next 2 viewings.

I could also mention Keddies although in a sense its still there, also there was a pub on the corner of Alexander Street where I spent many a saturday night after a hard days work at Sainsbury (the old one)

And also the bait and tackle shop on the left at the top of Pier Hill, think it was the last shop on the right before the hill?[/QUOTE]

wasn't that Goings?

Haunted House at Peter Pan's playground, man that was terrible but it didn't stop me going on it loads of times when I was down there as a kid.

When I worked at Peters Pans there was a fight in there and the staff had to go in and throw out the fighters.
