Favourite fish and chip shop?

Best one ever, was Rick Steins in Padstow. Not the restaurant, although that was excellent, but the chip shop itself.

There's a small restaurant attached to it, but that gets rammed very early as people start queuing from 11.00am.

It's best though when you sit on the quayside and eat it from the box. Not cheap; Two cod & Chips, two kids fish and chips, 1 mushy peas, one fresh tartare sauce, one portion of bread and butter, one bottle of water and one diet coke (that was mine!) was something like £30!

Nice though.

I miss fish and chips :( How sad it that!!

I miss saying fish and chips....

Up here they call it a fish supper. You always refer to what ever you want first then say supper, for example, Fish supper, Sausage supper, Pie supper so on and so on. There is never any mention of chips unless you just want a portion of chips.

Not sure in Glasgow Rich has the same experiences??

Go to fish to go at kent elms or the one on elmsleigh drive if you haven't been there. Never disappoints.

Sorry made a quick edit probably before you refreshed the page. I've given Fish To Go at Kent Elms a few tries but find them to be pretty bad, especially when your use to really decent stuff from Henry Higgins/Oldhams etc.

Regarding the mention that was given to the one down Oban Road, I use to live nearby to that one and it was bloody fantastic before it changed hands from the Garsides to the Asian owners (that's not to say its bad now of course as it has been pointed out already as still being decent). It is a strange location but it used to get packed with the local residents in the evenings, also helped that the chap who ran it was a really nice bloke, Melvyn I think his name is.

according to Wiki

"The term "supper" usually refers to an evening meal that is eaten between 8:00 and 9:00pm. It should be noted that supper is not a common meal in many cultures." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supper

So,AS, what do you ask for if you want Fish and Chips at 6.30 ;)

In all honesty, I've only had one meal from the kent elms one and it wasn't all that nice, rather small portions too, but that was a long time ago. Since then I've always gone to the one on Elmsleigh Drive, and that has never let me down. So I thought that the one at kent elms might've improved from the last meal I had there.

Henry Higgins is the nicest. Every time I walk passed I always get a chip butty. Nice little restaurant in there too so you don't have to walk around with a bag of chips in one hand and a saveloy in the other if you were to take it away !! :thump:

No mention of Van Looeys?
Used to be very nice, still gets good feedback from what I hear. I'm sure I heard there is a new one open around too, not sure where though. The only one I know of now (before the pier burnt down) is the one by westcliff station.

20 odd years ago I use to work there. Its still owned by the same people and they are very health conscous. Also the fish was collected daily by the boss.
Very good money in owning a chippie

Never get bad grub from there, live just round the corner again so happy days!

Scotland fish suppers are awful. Always haddock, and if you want "sal n sors" it's a strange sauce mixture of vinegar and brown sauce. They deepfy everything, from pizzas to cheeseburgers.

Henry Higgins is a good shout, and Oldhams obviously. Whoever (seany t?) said that London is very hit and miss made a very good point. I've had some lovely chips round here (there's a very good place on the road down from Honor Oak Park station in SE23), but a lot of them are just soaked in oil with no bite to the chip whatsoever. Charlatans.

If you ask for Cod they look at you as if you are a freak, they all say they prefer Haddock but that is a load of b***x. They only dislike cod because the English eat it, they have to distance them selves from any think English.

Jesus if theres one thing I miss about the UK its a decent bit of fish and chips, the first thing I eat when I get back is just that.

Anyway the best fish and chips for me is run by a chinese family at the top of Carlton Drive, Leigh On Sea, closely followed by the fish house near to the Mecca of football.

Wallopppppppp..
