I'm hearing Hampshire are after James Foster to replace Nic Pothas.

Whilst it could make some sense given Adam Wheater's emergence and Hampshire's reliance on slow-bowling - eg Briggs, Tahir, Afridi, Cork etc - bugger off!

I presume if his contract is up we stand to make nothing in terms of compensation.... Hopefully he decides to see out his career but I wouldn't blame him if he is being given the chance for 1 final pay day. England has now passed him by and Hampshire do seem to be bringing through a decent batch of youngsters. Would be sad to see him go but I don't think I would blame him. I guess much depends on how highly they rate Wheater.....he probably wouldnt want to hang around for another 3 years if Foster does get that contract.

That said, Hampshire's young keeper (Bates?) looked very accomplished yesterday.

Any vague hopes of promotion we had are taking a bit of a battering today, 79/6 against Gloucestershire up in Colchester. Though our successes seem to have come from poor first innings starts so you never now!

We're taking advantage, Wheater has biffed 80 off 65 and the last ten overs have gone for 72. 160/5.

Ton up for Wheater.

Marvellous effort, his hundred coming off just 86 balls.

Ryan bellDoeschate is back in the runs, and has just got his half century. That's about 40 more runs than he got in his previous seven innings combined.

Cracinfo has given RtD out twice now, on 10 and 111, but he's now 120*.

Second time he was given out, it appears it was actually Napier who was out.

Essex now apparently 359/9.

**stat alert** If this 10th wicket partnership can put on another 70, it will mean that the bottom 5 wickets have put on more first innings runs than the top 5 wickets have this season **stat alert**

A couple of quick wickets and Gloucestershire are 157/5, 46 shy of avoiding the follow on.

Speaking to someone who was at the game, the first RtD dismissal was the last ball before lunch. He was given out by the umpire after a long long delay and clearly disputed / remonstrated over the decision. During lunch the umpire overturned their decision! THought amongst the crowd was that the umpire may have thought RtD was walking (ie giving himelf out) and therefore confirmed the out with a raised finger, but in actual fact he was just heading off for lunch........

Needing to make up time after yesterday was rained off, we won the toss and bowled out Derbyshire for 132:happy:

However we're 20-3 in reply:'(

Some good news today in that both Tom Craddock and Tymal Mills have put their time out of the team to good use by each signing new 2 year deals.

A leggie and a quick. Got to like that.

At Fortress Chelmsford (c), we've got a slender first innings lead, but it's basically looking like an one innings game.

We need to invest in a quality overseas batter or two for next season. We cant rely on the batting line up we have this season. The bowling depth is good, especially with the two signings mentioned above and with the likes of Topley coming through thy system as well...

I'm pleased that Mills & Craddock have signed on, but I'm still surprised that Topley was only signed on a one year deal. Our bowling strength must be good now as Essex have allowed Chris Wright to go on loan to Warwickshire, and they aren't offering him a new contract. YB must be in mourning. :'(
