Essex CCC 2019

Monday looks on and off in the afternoon and Tuesday now looks like a wash out so yes I would bowl first.
As I’ve said, Somerset can’t take 20 Essex wickets when Essex are bowling.

Great day for Essex with county's football and cricket teams both triumphing against the odds.

This could be a very special week for Essex.

Full credit to Harmer for turning things around in T20. I was sceptical of his appointment as T20 captain as I wasn't sure if he should be an automatic selection (he'd have played on these worn pitches anyway - even before we were without Zampa) but he's demonstrated the decisive leadership we needed - dropping Chopra was a brave but correct call - and has emerged as RtD's eventual successor in the Championship when that day comes.

He's one of three who with this triumph has cemented himself as an Essex legend up there with the likes of Gooch, Fletcher and Lever. The other two are Ravi - our star man this tournament - and Ronnie Irani. The turnaround since Irani returned is nothing short of astonishing and I can't speak highly enough of the job he has done.

It's beyond my wildest expectations to be living through another era of Essex domination but with hopefully four trophies in four years (2016 Div 2, 2017 Div 1, 2019 Blast and, fingers crossed, 2019 Div 1) we are living the dream. Long may it continue!

Forecast shows rain 1 on on Monday, rain all day Tuesday and Thursday. Only Wednesday looks good.

Bowl first?

Just play normally. The last thing we want to do is the football equivalent of bringing on extra defenders and invite pressure. If there are helpful bowling conditions bowl and put them under pressure. If it is the best batting conditions put runs on the board and put them under pressure.

After a long lifetime of supporting both our beloved teams, this has been a great weekend and is shaping up to be a happy week too. What days they are for Essex cricket, right up there with the breakthrough Championships way back. Old man here with gladdened heart. COY both teams.

Harmer, a Essex legend? Well maybe but come on then, let’s have your all time Essex eleven.

1. Graham Gooch

Your turn!

How are we judging this: best players to have played for Essex or players to have done most for Essex?

Are we judging players at their peak or over their entire career?

How many overseas players are we allowing?

Really, he was shi** wasn't he?
He was supposedly the 6th best bowler in world cricket when he signed.
Friend of mine remarked if he is the 6th best then he (my mate) was the seventh.
Bit of a pie chucker if I remember rightly.

What a summer of cricket we have had! As an Essex and England supporter I don't think 2019 will ever be topped. 2 finals that went right to the wire.

On the greatest Essex XI Stuart Law has to be in it for me

Weather report from Somerset. Sunny, but with cloud arriving. I am 15 miles east of Taunton, so will be slightly behind the approaching weather from the Atlantic . I would guess maybe play until about 3 or 4 pm today.
