Essex 2017 (archived)

The way a cricketer gets the big wages is by getting international recognition (well at least in England, that's obviously not true in West Indies, NZ etc) and a central contract.

I have vague recollections of at least one of them turning down the same wages and saying it wasn't for money but for career opportunity. Does that ring any bells with anyone? Maybe Foakes as he wanted the gloves or maybe Mills as Sussex aren't a test ground.

But yes, good to see Cook back and hopefully that should give us the impetus to get us over the line.

Yes to be fair you are correct, however Topley and Mills would of broken into the red ball squads international squads at Essex. Mills moved to Sussex and from what I was told got a nice pay increase to go, I think you are correct that Foakes moved to get the experience not for cash.

Is that a pay increase over what he was on previously at Essex or a pay increase over what Essex were offering? He'd have been due a substantial pay increase having broken through at Essex and become a first team player.

I'm not sure how much the decision to move on was made before numbers were discussed, what doesn't help is that there have been so many departures they seem to merge into one!

I don't think Essex are always quite as poverty stricken as they sometimes make out. Chelmsford is always sold out for T20 with beer flowing and there's been a few big splash signings who won't have been cheap - Owais Shah, Shaun Tait, Dwayne Bravo for one day only etc. I think that probably puts them in a better position than a few of the minor test grounds (Durham, Glamorgan) and it's also worth remembering that all the counties are subject to a wage cap (although I think Middlesex and Surrey get a London allowance).

K*nt don't seem to have been struck by defections quite as much and they were in all sorts of financial trouble not so long ago.

I think there were a combination of factors at play - money, league one status, opportunity and getting away from the Grayson era. One without the other might have changed everything or nothing. In other words we don't really know!

Still I like to think we can now all agree we should get promoted this season and then win the T20 next season:winking:

huge game tomorrow.
it could potentially be important that we're replacing an opener averaging 26 in the championship with one averaging 114, long may that continue.

also, if Brown and Westley don't have stinking ends to the season we may have TWO batsmen getting to a thousand runs in a season for the first time in many, many years.

lets hope we get it right with selection etc and get revenge for the losses at our place this season and last.

Enough of Div 2, let's get that promotion

A great early start with 2 wickets in the first over for Jamie Porter but it's gone a bit quiet since then.

Would be nice to pick up another before lunch.

Posted at 12:58 - you were only giving the bowlers two minutes to do that!

But five down now. Keep at 'em boys...

Very good day, (so far) Leicester 238 all out. We picked up the maximum bowling points and denied them additional batting points, which could all help come the final day of the season.

Would be great if we don't lose a wicket by the end of play today

Update: B0ll0cks!.. Cook gone for just 4, & Porter gone for a duck :'(

Essex are now just 12-2. We never make it easy for ourselves, do we?

End of Play: Essex 13-2.

45 minutes ago, I thought we had this in the bag, now I think it's 50/50. The beauty of cricket i guess.

without being there or seeing the pitch or anything, i'm fairly confident here. we have the batting to do this but that Klein sounds bloody good.
knowing us we can throw it away but we can properly bat all the way down

Cook was disappointing just because you'd expect him to get a big score against this quality of bowling. Losing the nightwatchman isn't a big deal though. Think we are in a good position today, Browne has dug in well of late and we have a strong batting line up behind him.

(watch Browne get out early now )

Well done KS he made 2 :'(

If ever Ravi needs a decent knock pray its today,10 runs in 42 minutes, that's the way to play Ravi, its four days not a 20/20 bash

Not going to plan this, from memory (probably wrong ) do we always lose to these? Didn't they beat us to end there ridiculous streak without a win

:sad::'(

Yes, but obviously we don't always lose to them otherwise they wouldn't have been on such a massive streak without a win!

I wonder if we'll be getting in another overseas player now Ryder has gone home. Hardus Viljoen has made a difference for K*nt. Whilst a bowler like that would be a great signing we obviously lack a spinner. Maybe a move for Yasir Shah after the ODIs and then the following season?

Or has Irani/Essex been stung once too often with Pakistani overseas players, particularly leggies?
