Reality Check

For those that know me, you'll know I actually held a Man United season ticket during the days I objected to Jobson and carried out his "if you don't like it go elsewhere" threat. (Before you point at me and call me names, it was 13 years ago now and I am fully recovered)

I learned certain things in my time there. The main one being that when Man United come to town, there is an influx of touts and there are Man Utd fans who will try any means to get a ticket. That does include local supporters club members camping overnight outside ticket offices.

If you ever thought that the home areas would be exclusively for Southend fans, you're sadly mistaken. I've been to games where Man U fans have outnumbered home fans in the home areas. In fact the only place on earth they wont do it is Leeds. Most will not respect the fact this is, for many of us, our special day and I fully expect there to be pockets of reds openly supporting Man U. If they can do it on The Kop, they can certainly do it in the West Stand.

Rather than be causing problems by spending 90 mins attempting to get people ejected, the best solution is to stand up, open your lungs and for 90 mins put your heart and soul into supporting the home team.

Oh and btw, for all those that asked me 13 years what would happen if Southend ever played Man United, on Tuesday you find out. The blood is most definately... blue.

Spot on!

Drop the pathetic witch-hunt, sing up for the lads, by thunder are they going to need YOUR support on Tuesday night ...

I agree, enjoy the game and get behind the team. if the Man U fans can't make themselves heard they won't give it large and they won't enjoy themselves

Quote[/b] (Xàbia Shrimper @ Nov. 02 2006,09:44)]Does it really matter that much? I mean Manchester United are one of the most popular teams in the world and if one of their fans was prepared to queue throughout one of the coldest nights of the year then he (or she) surely deserves that ticket, whether or not it be in the home area. Embarking on an all-out search to root out these fans just smacks of a desperate attempt to avoid the simple fact that Southend United are a far, far smaller club that Manchester United. Do we really want to have our very own "Kristallnacht" next Tuesday evening?
Yes!
Already hired my Gestapo uniform - SS now stands for "South Stand" - embroidered the SUFC badge on both sleeves to be easily recognisable as a real supporter, practiced my marching.
Just in the process of constructing a portable detention area with self contained cyanide canisters!
Slogan - " Root them out of Roots hall"

Yes...you'll have to murder about 250 Man Utd fans for it to be anywhere near the extent of Night of the Long Knives! Got my rifle ready, ha! Who plays the role of the "Ernst Roehm" of the Man Utd. support, I wonder!

As long as you've got a ticket.

Yeah I agree with the getting behind the team and all that...

But, it won't happen because the ground will be full of people who really don't give a sh!t about the score, they are just going in the hope of seeing a few superstars..

It was bad enough on Tuesday, we had over 10,000 in the ground but the atmosphere was like a morgue, because unfortunately we have too many hangers on, who have come out of the woodwork this season who don't even know half the team, let alone any chants...

The amount of times I heard, who's that number 10, is it Freddy??..

Unfortunately this is the price of a small club doing well..

Thanks for confirming the conclusion I had eventually reached. They are the biggest club on a global scale.

No, it's not. There is no such regulation.
A poor choice of wording perhaps, but I'm pretty sure that chanting for the other team is considered to be a possible antagonisation of the home fans and that the club would be expected to treat it as such. I'm not 100% sure exactly what is and what isn't allowed, hence my request to the club for guidance.

If the advice that I receive is that it will be the club's policy to remove away fans from the home end, then I will have no hesitation in pointing out anyone trying to wind us up, whether or not I have your blessing in doing so.

the atmosphere was sh!t on tuesday because the footy was sh!t.. the atmosphere against Norwich was brilliant because the last 20 minutes were brilliant.. If we give the Manc reserves a scare or are within a goal with 20 to go ,and arn't playing like we did against Hull, the atmosphere will be superb..

The club won't do it and you know that. There's going to be several hundred Man Ure fans in the home areas - possibly even a thousand or so - so it's not going to be feasible for the club to start removing people just because they happen to be rooting for one of the biggest clubs in the world and not a side bottom of the Championship. By all accounts, most of these fans are going to be dads with their kids, families, long-standing fans who couldn't get a ticket from Old Trafford; the last thing they'll be doing is trying to upset poor you. They'll be doing what you should be concentrating your efforts on - supporting their team on the pitch ...

i agree with xabia.. concentrate on the game... we can do this!

I'm not addressing the straw man element of your argument - I've said more than once that my concern is over Manchester United fans looking to antagonise our own supporters, a situation which has caused some very serious problems elsewhere. That is my point, so kindly stop fishing and tell me why exactly you feel that I am wrong on that specific issue.

Quote[/b] (Xàbia Shrimper @ Nov. 02 2006,09:59)]Yet it was perfectly alright for Southend fans to sit in the home areas at Leyton Orient a few years ago and celebrate when the Shrimpers scored?!

Yeah ...
Sorry Mike, in my opinion you are intent on looking to stir things up here on comments which nobody actually made.  No-one said it was right, but people wanted a ticket so did anything to get one, including myself.

However I sat in the Orient home end, I did not wear any colours, did not sing, I just sat there and enjoyed the game.

If I had stood up and cheered when SUFC scored then IN MY OPINION I would have been quite rightly attacked and beaten.  I've never been involved in trouble at a football match before, but if a Man Utd fan disrespected SUFC by singing/chanting etc then whatever comes their way is deserved.  You say about supporting the team, but how can you if you have a Utd fan chanting in your ear as well.  They didn't introduce HOME and AWAY ends just for the hell of it.

However on saying that, if there is a Utd fan who sits there and respects it is a SUFC home game then no problem at all.

I have friends who are United supporters who have obtained tickets in the home ends.  If they are battered and bruised then I for one will not feel in the slightest bit sorry for them.  Yes, I am a nice friend, but that is life.
