This charge of cyberbullying seems to raise its head every so often mainly by those who think they are on the recieving end. An example of this would be Aberdeen Shrimper a few years ago who actually accused my ulta-ego Hector of making threats towards his family (complete rubbish I might add) That ended with him deleting his account after becoming increasingly nasty to several posters on here. Or you could take Osy as an example. Some of the spats I have had with him have got quite heated to say the least but he as well as I don't take it to heart or stalk the streets at night hunting each other down with lumps of wood.

Having seen some of the recently closed threads involving Barna Blue on the Politics Thread then I suspect I might have an inkling as to why this matter has cropped up. Do people on here really worry about little green or red squares on their profile?

Totally agree GHG . This is primarily an adults forum and while most of us have deeply held views with impassioned arguments and we can all get a little overheated at times , we leave it there . Anyone else who does take it further ... probably has issues that they would manifest in a similar vein elsewhere then this forum. Rep is pre , people have a perfect right to disagree with what anyone has posted and if at times some of us want the last word a bit of red helps that last bit of venom leak out then that's ok by me.

Freedom of speech is a right , however so is taking the consequences of what you say and people s reaction to it.

How do you define it though Barna? Would you include the personal attack you made on Number 11 yesterday as bullying? If so that would put you in the same category.
Oh, and one thing on here is almost guaranteed - If you moan about Rep, you will get plenty of it.

I would have thought that cyber bullying, by pretty much anyone's definition, involves one or more people ganging up repeatedly on someone else.
My riposte to number 11 yesteday was certainly not an attack-it was more in the nature of that much maligned word recently-banter.Nor was it personal since I don't know him.Nor was it a repeat, since to my knowledge, we haven't crossed swords seriously before. In the course of that debate I admitted something about myself(to my own detriment).I noticed that he(among others)was quick to seize on it.
I couldn't give a monkey's about getting rep.from you, or your miserable little right wing gang.(I have my own way of dealing with it as I imagine you've noticed).I just find your gang's extreme opinions rather tiresome and in your particular case extremely poorly argued as well(as you no doubt find mine).

Cyberbullying has been defined as-

"the use of cell phones, instant messaging, e-mail, chat rooms or social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to harass, threaten or intimidate someone."

The question is does it exist on SZ and if so what can be done about it?

IMO it certainly does exist on SZ,which is one reason why I've set up this poll to test out other Zoners opinions.

The question of what can be done about it(if in fact it does exist on SZ)is rather more difficult to answer.
Personally, I feel that withdrawing the reputation facility would be a step in the right direction.Or as others (like Mick)have suggested, allowing people to opt out of using or receiving this facility, altogether.Failing that, I would argue for the reputation facility to be made private, and not public as at present, since as it stands this can be too easily be used to create a bandwagon effect by unscrupulous people hunting in packs.

The owners of SZ need to be aware of this problem and take steps to deal with it,whenever and wherever it arises. There are guidelines for this, as I've been made aware from doing a part-time course on ICT and e-safety(I'd be happy to pass on the guidelines I have to anyone who pm's me with a request for them).

I remember a few months back you stated that anyone who gave you red rep would be given one back immediately regardless of why, and to me that suggested that you believe no one should be able to challenge any of your opinions. Whilst I realise it is a natural lefty trait to love the sound of your own voice and dismiss all other opinions as fascist bull****, I think your tit for tat stance has done you no favours at all among some posters.

For what its worth I only red rep you now for a bit of fun, but obviously you take it to heart and, therefore, I will refrain in future.

Miserable? That’s a bit harsh. As far as I know most of the gang are quite happy.

If you are unable to engage in debate without resorting to attempts at abuse / sly digs / pomposity please refrain from posting.

I remember XXL16 taking my lunch money before giving me a Chinese burn and throwing my bag on top of a bus shelter.

I thought it was an isolated incident but this thread has made me realize we all have to confront this issue.

By pretty much anyone's definition..... except presumably your own (or at least the one you quoted) which makes no reference to repeatedly or anything suggesting repetition.

Whilst on the subject of definitions "Personal: of or relating to a particular person". It's not necessary to know someone in order to make personal comments about them.

I also think you do care about getting red rep, which is why you are complaining about it.

That's certainly my stance re- red rep.As for the the second bit of your statement, (which I've highlighted) I don't recognise it as anything I've said or would say.
FWIW, I would have thought my statments are as open to be challenged just as much(or as little) as anyone else's -here rather than elsewhere.
I wouldn't agree that I take rep rep to heart but yes, I do take it personally.

You would have thought that was the case wouldn't you. Yet when anyone challenges you, seeks clarification from you or slightly shows you up, you resort to abuse and insults. Maybe showing a bit more dignity and thought in your posts will result in more respect coming your way.

Pity you can't let Stevo talk for himself. What are you the organ grinder?

When I said I didn't give a monkey's, I meant about being criticised openly in a public forum on SZ.
Obviously I do care about organised, bandwagon jumping, red rep as I've mentioned elsewhere.

or your miserable little right wing gang...I just find your gang's extreme opinions rather tiresome.

Is there an official gang? Who are the members?

What extreme opinions have been posted?

Also, what is this rep thing? I've only started posting frequently quite recently and I still don't understand the point of rep. Can anyone enlighten me?

Sorry, but on my present timetable I've only got time to give arguments or clarification on Fridays(and/or at the weekend). The rest of the time I'm far too busy to give anything more than pithy opinions, I'm afraid.
FWIW, I don't think I go around abusing or insulting people(at least compared to some on here, who seem to make a habit of just that and regularly get away with it).
I do hope this particular post shows some evidence of thought on my part.As for respect (or not)I'm quite happy to leave that to others.
ps I didn't peg you for a George Galloway fan.

I think it's fair to say there IS an unofficial gang.Obviously you're not a member(yet).

I'd rather not say here but you can check on some of the comments left on my settings profile.

Not me I'm afraid.

Simple. When someone posts something you like you add green (positive) reputation to them. When Barna posts more Guardian links, or other crap, you give him Red (negative) rep, nd when Londonfatso posts anything about anything you just give him Red rep without even bothering to read the post.

Given you have spent plenty of time this week casually posting messages containing abuse and setting up a poll (which, given your subsequent lack of inclination to actually debate the subject properly, leads to a conclusion that it was actually trolling / attention seeking) you should have plenty of time when posting in the future to self censure your posts to reduce the abusive nature of them.

You may not think you 'go around abusing or insulting people', but rest assured you have done this plenty of times in the past so please exercise greater discretion in the future. As I said above, a little more dignity, humility and thought from you may see you being given a bit more respect.
