Demise of the NoTW

One of the reasons Hugh Grant was so dedicated to goin through and making sure there was an investigation (as he talked about it last night on Questiontime ). People living in the public eye were seemed as fair game even when it went beyond public interest.

Be intresting to hear Slippers take on all this , there are murmurings that in the Journalist world there are many who have not been happy about this for years and a very large lack of solidarity to allow this to happen and even revolts from within the industry to get back to "proper" journalism ?

Wasn't she linked with Ross Kemp at some time or other, partners or married to or something? Does anyone honestly think though that the NOTW was the ONLY paper that's been doing this? I'm convinced this is just the tip of the iceberg and the fallout will be felt for some time. I'd be quite pleased for Murdoch himself to be brought to his knees, although I feel really sorry for the many genuine people that will now have concerns about their jobs.

Spot on.Not only are other tabloids almost certainly involved but don't forget certain elements in the Old Bill either who've been passing on phone numbers to the hackers.
Neither Murdoch(nor his son) qualify as a "fit and proper person"to run a newspaper or indeed a vast media empire in the UK(or elsewhere).

People in the public eye are fair game, particularly in our current "celebrity" driven world where a bunch of no marks from Brentwood can win a top tv award. And particularly if you are Hugh Grant who was caught inflagrante delicto with a LA tom in his car.

We now live in a country that worships celebrity culture, where people think it's their divine right (not Divine Brown Mr Grant) to be famous. And with that fame goes the regular stories in the tabloids and other so called celeb magazines. And then irony of ironies those that sought fame and the public eye suddenly want their privacy.

Are you suggesting that the so called "quality" newspapers are scrupulous in their dealings?

The truly risible thing about this whole hacking episode is that - according to Mrs. M - the only newspaper which she can say for sure wasn't up to it was the Sunday Mirror... because they couldn't afford to pay the hackers and the hush money!! Grauniad may have been similarly strapped for cash, and may therefore not have done much hacking either.

The notion that this is limited to the Screws, or even News Int., is pure fantasy. Very sad to see that the Screws - a 168-year old title - has been sacrificed, so that the Digger can hush the story up, so as not to affect his share price and his attempted takeover of BSkyB... since that's what this is all about. The powers that be at the Grauniad Trust and the BBC hate the idea of the Digger owning BSkyB outright, so they're trying to fling as much sh*t in his direction as possible. They seem to have forgotten that when he puts his mind to something, there is next to nothing that will stop the Digger getting what he wants - including sacrificing a 168-year old title and scores of staff.

As for hacking generally, though, I can't wait until the spotlight is turned on Associated News and in particular the Mail on Sunday on this issue. That will make for jolly good sport.

Likewise when it gets to Mirror Group, will Miliband and his cronies be quite vociferous in their condemnation....

It stands to reason that the Scews is the paper most deeply implicated in this: they had the biggest readership and therefore the biggest budget. Next most likely would be the Mail/MoS which I understand is the next best resourced paper. The Mail's targets are probably a little different from the NotW's, so they probably won't have been targetting murder victims' families but they certainly have their vendettas. Newsrooms are, as far as I can tell, highly incestuous so I'd be very surprised if methods employed at one paper, weren't also employed at another paper.

I hope the decision to disband the NotW title won't stop a proper investigation into this.

Just a thought: With Rebecca Brooks warning of "worse things to come", could there be some NI scandal that brings down the Government? After all, thinking of something worse than hacking into dead kids phones is a tough ask.

I certaintly think Cameron will have to justify his appointment of Coulson otherwise he's looking at one term in office. This could be a Blair/Kelley moment after just over a year in Government.
