decent restuarant in SOS

Just to finish this little episode I ended up in the Karalma (something like that) down clifftown road next 2 the Amina curry house nr Saks.

Karalma is an South Indian restaurant so very few of your usual suspects on the menu, but if u want something different get urself down there, food was excellent and because its just open the manager is giving away free food dishes and booze, £40 spent for a 3 course meal with a bottle of wine and 3 of those large goldfish beers

Will defiantly be returning

Masala Hut in Hamlet court road will get you the most authentic ruby in Southend without question.
Looks a bit cafe style bit it's the business.

Just thought i'd let you know there's an Indian called Annalashmi here in Perth, Western Australia that has no till !!
Basically you pay what you feel the meal is worth, you can eat as much as you like and walk away paying only a $1 if you want.
Theres also a restaurant in Northbridge that will let you wash up if you can't afford a meal,
Shame there both 9,500 miles or a 19 hr flight away from you guys!!!!!!!!

In a country founded by criminals I would have thought that is a risky business plan........

Indeed, but it's run by some sort of Indian Charity and not a stagecoach thief from Whitechapel.
Incidentally there was a guy sent to Australia for 'Impersonating an Egyptian'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a great crime!!!!!

I like a curry and don't mind a fairly hot one but don't go for the stupidly spicy dishes. However I found that when I went for a curry when visting the in-laws in Brisbane (bless 'em, they thought I'd be missing the English national dish) the dishes weren't nearly as hot as their equivalent back home and I was quite comfortable wolfing down a Vindaloo. Is that generally the case Perth Shrimper? Could it be0 that Indian food isn't as much a part of Aussie culture as over here and they are building the tolerance level to hot currys slowly - or did I just go to a wimpish curry house?

i also found currys werent on par with the UK strength scale, this was untill I dined in a restuarant in Sydney and ordered a Vindaloo, on Oxford St and it blew me head off !

Not wanting to look in trouble I almost cleaned the place out of VB

Indeed you are quite correct.
Other than Annalashmi which i mentioned, curry's haven't really pushed far into aussie culture.
Most curry places provide runny, boring and very similar flavours that leave you screaming for a u.k curry.
Thai and Asian food is the buzz here, though as you've visited you will know that not every city is the same as aus is so huge.
Even the supermarket sauces are a bit boring.

We've got f**king brilliant seafood though!!!!!

It annoys me that curry heat strength varies massively between restaurants.

My weapon of choice is the chicken madras yet I have had some that were as mild as a Korma and some that were hotter than vindaloo.

There should be an international standard established so that you can order a madras anywhere in the world and it will contain the same amount of heat.

The Chinese have been playing this game for a while. The numbers on Chinese menus were standardised as part of Mao's great leap forward and as a consequence you can walk into any Chinese restaurant in the world, order a (say) number 39 and receive the same dish.

Good idea,
Thus eliminating the disturbing concept of 'ring sting'.

Mumma Mia isn't too bad, not the greatest Italian but nice food and location, nice to have a stroll along the sea front after your meal.

Yeah good place, cheap as well.

Deep fried brie as a starter i would recommend,

I remember they had loads of French waitresses there which was nice.

Waitresses have always been top quality when i was there, smile on there face and very helpfull.

I work with a bloke who can eat those finger chillies, the really hot ones, like crisps, seeds as well. Lunatic. he says you just go over the pain threshold and you get a sort of high. I've managed a raw one without the seeds so far and its true, if you try to get rid of the heat by drinking it doesn't work. Just open your mouth and let the heat swell and it suddenly goes POW. Your brain gets a rush and then its no problem.

But I need to try it with the seeds yet.

I like a really Sour Madras and may I recommend a chilled Hungarian White Wine , fantastic combination.
