Deadpool 2024

US post-punk musician Luis Vasquez aka Soft Moon and techno artist Juan Mendez aka Silent Servant (along with Mendez' wife) all found dead in an LA apartment. Suspected fentanyl overdose. Absolutely tragic. Big problem out there right now.

Tony Clarkin, founder, guitarist and the sole songwriter of the rock band Magnum has passed away aged 77.

Magnum never really made it big, but they did release 23 albums, with one certified gold and one silver.

It turns out I saw Magnum three times in all, twice at Reading festivals in the 80s, as well as at a Butlin's Giants of Rock festival.

Clarkin onstage in Minehead in 2018.

Barry John, Wales rugby legend, 79.
What a strange world Rugby Union was prior to it going professional. John only played 25 times for Wales, retiring at 27 as the record points scorer (90) for his country. He had to give up his job as a PE teacher in order to tour South Africa in 1968 and he spent six weeks unemployed on his return.

In those days, to stop players from defecting to Rugby League, top professionals were given what become known as 'boot money.' These were illegal payments, as the game was supposed to be purely amateur at that time, from their Union, kit manufacturer or sponsors. Envelopes of cash would be stuffed into players' boots.

Barry John was never charged with receiving such payments, though others have since admitted giving him boot money.
