The lack of starts and current transfer status of Martin for me, is just another projection of how much of numpty our manager is

Not happy about this at all.

Bad, bad move.

By my calculations, we have a squad of 20. Which includes Coughlan and Bentley and Belford (1 month)

7 of those are currently injured or not 100%

1 is looking for a move.

1 has been transfer listed.

And that does not include Bilel!

What a total ****ing disaster. How anyone can say otherwise is beyond me.

Some people are saying that this is a good move because we are winger heavy and need to free up some funds....how do you buy too many wingers by mistake?

Not sure im too disappointed by this news, he just didnt do anything whenever i saw him, certainly at home I dont remember him having a good game. If it lightens the financial side to enable another CM then all well and good

By my calculations we had 21 players on the books at this stage in 04/05 including three keepers, two kids who'd get two sub appearances between them all season (Lawson & Kightly), a guy with a broken leg (Pettefer) and three players (Broughton, Husbands & Corbett) on the way out.

20 players topped up with loanees is about right for a club our size. 30+ like last season was ridiculous.

Agree with Smiffy and Onceknownasarab. Too many panic buys in January who hardly played or unbalanced the team, players unhappy about not getting a game, the whole Mohsni saga, The Ryan Hall situation, only one fit centre midfielder (you've had 3 months to get someone there Mr Sturrock), its really not a good way to start the season. I thik if we dont get off to a flyer then Sturrock will be under serious pressure by October. Whats the odds on him gone by Christmas?

Because you get a winger, Martin, who doesnt live up to expectations so you sign replacements so then need to sell him.

There are a lot of players who fail to live up to Sturrock's expectations. They normally suffer from not having a run in the team or playing and watching the ball career through the air past them and then get blamed for not getting involved in the game. The transfer policy from Christmas onwards can only be described as 'mental'. We clearly laid out a lot, only to be in a position now without a full midfield and a permanent Goalkeeper. The future under this gaffer does not seem bright.

Flood was not a Sturrock signing by his own admission, and neither Benyon or Martin are Sturrock type players. AB is alluded to it earlier in this thread and I wonder how much of an input the manager had into a number of the signings made in January.

We played decent football the last half a dozen games. Martin started one of them and looked very ordinary.

I am not at all surprised he isnt in PS' plans

Our best keepers over the last 5 years have all been loans, so not sure what that matters....

Can someone explain the difference between a 'Sturrock signing' and I assume there's such a thing as a 'non-Sturrock signing'?

I cannot believe he was a failure to the extent we had to play 2 full backs at Peterborough the other night :nope:

Going on what i saw there i'd rather we had kept Gilbert for left back duties

Anto Flood, for example was signed by the Chief Executive as per his quote below:

"Southend didn't work out for me, it was the Chief Executive who signed me and not the manager so my face didn't fit with the manager and I left after a few months."

I wonder whether he was the only one to 'be signed by the Chief Executive' which i assume means the manager did not want to sign him.

Flood was quoted saying "I wasnt bought by the manager" (or along those lines) and it appears he wasn't/isnt the only one. DM has obvious talent, but we didn't see much of it, although i feel he never got a good run of games and thus didnt get much of a chance to prove himself. As has been alluded to, its a worry this has happened so close to the start of the season, especially with such a threadbare squad and a lack of quality in the centre of the pitch, but Sturrock appears to giving it the "we lost the first 4 games at Plymouth and finished with 104 points" business so by this i hope he will have it all sorted by the end of the month but it seems a touch silly giving teams a few games head-start, in what is going to be a tough and tight division!!
