A great idea, but what about the fans who don't take their phone to a game ( i don't! ) , and those who don't use their phone to scan a QR code?.

QR codes have a bad rep for fraud and so I'd assume these QR locations are going to be well signposted around the ground.

If you don't take your phone to a game, then I'd expect the results of the QR scans to be posted here anyway.

Things, as people have been suggesting, are moving behind the scenes.

There is a blue Notice pinned to the telegraph pole next to the West Stand Ticket Office. It is headed 'Licensing Act 2003'. Sub heading 'Notice of Application for a variation of Premises Licence'.

I'm afraid I'm not clever enough to post a picture of the Notice! However, Dadds LLP Solicitors acting for and on behalf of Southend United have applied to Southend Council for the following:

  1. Amend the plan attached to the premises licence to add two bar servery arears within the curtilage of the Stadium serving the West Stand.
  2. To make no other alterations to the hours or conditions of the premises licence.
All representations to be made in writing by 11th October 2024.

The times they are a-changing...

Is there an application number shown on the notice? If so we should be able to get a link to the application which may enable us to support it during the consultation period.

No, unfortunately there is no application number. It just says:

"Interested parties and responsible authorities may make representation to the Licensing Authority (Southend-on-Sea City Council). All such representations shall be made in writing, by 11th October 2024. Representations should be sent to the Licensing Authority, Southend-on-Sea City Council, Civic Centre, Victoria Avenue, Southend-on-Sea, Essex SS2 6ZG or emailed to licact2003@southend.gov.uk"

This is all positive news and shows that the club are taking notice of concerns from fans. Nice to see they added two new doors to the bar for yesterdays game.

I spoke to TL when he popped over to the West about the Fanzone and apparantly they haven't agreed a spot for it yet.

One thing I really like that they’ve done, and something I’ve never seen in all my years attending at Roots Hall. During the first half, someone comes around with a selection of fizzy drinks and chocolate bars for all the stewards in front of the East from the dug out to the away end.

I assume it goes all the way around the stadium, but I only have clocked it in front of me and this season.

It’s little things like that that make Southend United a much better place to work.

Assuming the FanZone will be situated somewhere in the East Car Park, it would be a great idea and a help to the less mobile if the West Stand fans could get to the West Stand via the stadium, rather than having the long hike back up to St Mary's Church, along West Road and then down Shakespeare Drive. With the handheld kit the stewards now use I couldn't see it being a major problem.

It's a nice idea, but not sure how feasible it is. The South is too congested, the only possible way may be behind the North (up the slope) but this will very much depend on whether they want to use this area for away fans.

I had a quick chat with John Watson and TL yesterday. The corner reopening of the West Stand is well under way and the kiosk and toilets have been sorted, the seats are done and there are just a few bits to be finished before the council? go to the ground Monday/Tuesday to see whether it passes their rules re H/S etc They of course would like it open for next week so's to bring some money in from Charlton fans. The redelvopment of that area is costing the club 100k.

JW said that the Rats sorting of FF is still ongoing with AFL being talked with the council in about 6 weeks time ,if that gets done he can then apply for planning. He also added that the club should be fully owned by the consortium in about 6 months. We shall see on that point.

AFL

AFL is an abbreviation for "Above Finished Level" in the context of the construction and building industry. It refers to the height or elevation of a particular point or surface above the finished floor level. This term is commonly used in architectural and engineering drawings, as well as in construction contracts and specifications.

The AFL is an important consideration in many aspects of construction, such as determining the placement of fixtures, appliances, and equipment, as well as calculating the amount of materials needed for flooring, walls, and ceilings. It is also relevant when planning for accessibility features like ramps or elevators.

In addition to its practical applications, AFL can also have aesthetic implications. For example, a designer may choose to raise certain elements above finished level to create visual interest or emphasize their importance within a space.

Overall, AFL is a crucial concept in construction and building industry that helps ensure accuracy and consistency in design and execution.

The container/new beer area at the back of the West stand is still awaiting licensing permission but the club hope to have it in place by Xmas.

The training ground is coming on and the temporary cabins will be in place later this season as there are still a couple of months work alone sorting drainage/water/electrics etc.

The council questioned the changing of the floodlights to LED as they thought they might be to bright, TL told them they would be 150% of capacity light that would have to go up to 250 were we to get promotion to the EFL so they should be sorted sooner rather than later. The fanzone is a bit of a way off yet as they are talking to the council about parcels of land situated at the ground, mainly the house and land adjacent to it by the club shop which they hope to purchase.

Justin is away in Aus atm but comes back in November probably to see his dog (Oli) who is still in the Netherlands and believe it or not Justin actually went back there from Southend for his dogs birthday as he said Oli would miss out on his birthday walk to which JW replied to him, he doesn't know it's his birthday. 🙄

There is still lots of work going all on all around the stadium but TL said it will all take time and money. The main development of the East stand was being discussed with relevant parties in the industry apparently including our own @Sherif H as to use it the best way re seating and other facilities although of course that is a long way off.

It was nice of TL who was with me at the time to speak to Trevor Bashfords wife and offer his and the clubs condolences.

If i remember anything else (which no doubt i will) i will add it to this post.

Well done Cricko, great update. 👍

What progress are the COSU currently making on having a live stream of the Charlton FA Cup game next Sat in place? I see the Beeb plan to show Tamworth V Huddersfield next Fri .night.Now while that may be of interest to some good people in the Midlands & Yorkshire I'd wager it's of little interest to most people in South Essex or indeed South London, whereas a livestream of our cup game on Sat .would monetarise the game for SUFC.Since there willl be a camera ontop of the West stand anyway why not give punters who can't see the game in person a chance to watch? After all Yeovil managed to do it with their game in the cup against us last season.
