Why? He played up front in that game and has stated he prefers to play up front. Barry Corr is not going to score loads because he is playing a more supporting role in helping others get goals. Barnard hasn't started any and it is difficult to come on and make an impact in the short amount of time he gets.

Anyone who is labelled a "goal scorer" at this level will cost us or likely be snapped up by a higher division team. I'm curious as to what classes a player as a "goal scorer", it is getting 15+ goals a season or a rate of 1 goal every 2 games in recent seasons?

Well weston has never been labelled a striker any club has has played at, and he doesn't look like one to me, winger yes, striker no. As for a goal scorer Tubbs is an example of a goal scorer who didn't cost anything I don't think. Look end of the day I'm fed up of people trying to pick anargument on here, I'm not the only one who thinks we will struggle up front this season. If you think we will get promoted with the strikers we have at the club then fine, for me we won't.

Agree, in my opinion we need a goal scoring Centre Forward and a creative Centre Midfielder and the squad will be complete.

Sorry for having a debate on an internet forum. I asked a genuine question as to what you would class as a goal scorer. Matt Tubbs is a good example, but he is only on loan at Wimbledon and I bet his wage at Bournemouth is a fair amount - whether they are paying that is another question altogether.

I do think we will get promoted with the strikers we have as goals will come from all over the team. Leonard, Clifford, Hurst and Weston are capable of getting a decent amount of goals at this level. We have 2 relatively unknown strikers in Williams and Layne who could come good, but I'm not going to bet they'll get anywhere near Tubbs will.

All it takes is a couple of goals, confidence rises and they could go on a decent run.

I think that is a bit premature. The two new lads from Charlton and Billericay - Ellis Brown and Isaac Layne - have not yet been given a chance. And I do not buy this 'you win nothing with kids line'...Virtually all the good teams in League 2 have some promising teenagers in their ranks.

Time to give them a chance then. I saw Layne quite a bit at billericay and he had shed loads of pace, one thing we lack up front.

Just back in North Wales after 3 hour journey back from Carlisle.
What a frustrating game to watch, Southend played some neat stuff at times but have a poor habit of giving the ball away when pressing forward. Coker and Coulthirst had loads of space down the left and posed a threat but little else. Bentley kept us in it 2nd half but twice he wrong footed us by throwing 30 yard balls straight the Carlisle midfield.
Leonard seems off his game but did have a couple of efforts on goal.
To be fair the Carlisle goal was a cracker after good work from 2 going at White and then a sublime cross and a cracking headed goal, but Clifford took a cracking shot on the left of the box and put it just inside the post to left the teams spirits.
Surprisingly in the 2nd half when Hurst and Coulthirst were starting to impress, Brown hooked them both off. Worral looked lightweight but Atkinson did well and should start the next game.
Did not realise that Paynter was playing, probably because Prosser was in charge. Bolger escaped after a few slip ups in the 1st half, dwelling on the ball and being given the run about from Marriott on the left and cutting in at pace in 1st half and doing the same from the right in 2nd half. Corr is playing so deep that he offers nothing in my opinion, yes, a bit of closing down, but poor touches and no pace.
Weston was on the left wing mostly and worked hard but is not going to score many from there. Barnard is a shadow of his last time with us.
My ratings
Bentley. 7
White. 6
Coker 6
Bolger 6
Prosser 6
Hurst 6
Coulthirst 6
Clifford 7
Leonard 6
Weston 6
Corr 5
subs
Worral 5
Atkinson 6
Barnard 6
MoM Clifford worked hard and got us back level with a good accurate shot.

So frustrated to see 2 points lost, but I suppose a point from a difficult looking away fixture may be good enough as the season continues.
Well done to the 200+ Southend fans making the long journey from Essex, it seemed long enough for us doing the 300 mile round trip.

Just had some lovely Cumberland sausage, gravy and onions and some (proper, nice chunky) chips and a couple of pints of Jennings. In fact the performance today reminds me of the beer I am drinking - looks nice, shows well but come to the taste and it's okay but a little disappointing.

3 points there for the taking and it looked like we would win for the whole 90 minutes - pressure on us came from our own defensive hic-cups and one cracking cross and we are 1-0 down.

Good goal from Clifford and whilst there were no "easier to score than miss" moments (and the Carlisle goalie made some good saves including a double save from Sharkey) we could have seen Worrall, Weston and White hit the net.

Corr was trying too hard, Leonard made some good runs, some arguments between Prosser and Bolger early on, Weston and Sharkey were missing for part of the game, White and Coker coming forward well. Clifford was good in the 1st half - full of running, composure and good passing.

It is true that Dan made a couple of good saves but Carlisle were weak and for most of the game it was as if we were the home team.

And the grass was almost "Cambridge-esque" (for those of you of a certain age) with the ball sticking at times rather than running out. Used to our advantage at times but really Weston and Coulthurst (and also Hurst and Worrall) should really have done more down the wings.

I suspect Barry Corr is in the dressing room telling his team-mates that he would score with his head if they managed to put in one decent cross during the game.

Anybody know the dimensions of the pitch? It was in great condition but also seemed to be rather large.

Man of the match: Clifford (by a country mile)

Weston needs to play down the middle, that is all.

Showed in preseason that he is our biggest goal threat so play him where he wants to play, down the middle!

What like Fulham you mean?

Nope.

Fulham are a Championship side (for this season at least).

(Actually there's a nice parallel with 67/8-when Fulham were last relegated from the "old" First Division.

In the last home match programme, when Fulham were already certain to be relegated, the Chairman, stated there was no point in removing the flags of the other first division clubs, which used to be flown around Craven Cottage.

Obviously he thought Fulham would be back at the first attempt.

In fact they were relegated again the following season and didn't return to the top flight until Mohamed Al-Fayed took over).

I can only go by what the commentators said and from what I heard it was end to end stuff and I wasn't given the impression that we were that dominant. True we squandered a number of chances but from what I heard, if Marriott had his shooting boots on we could have been punished.
Our formation in the first-half caused us to be outflanked and White was exposed on a number of occasions. It honestly didn't come as any surprise when they scored. If the problem with not taking our chances is worrying then surely so is the way we appear to have been opened up at the back and a better side could have done us far more damage.

Draw was probably fair though we looked a bit more likely to take all three points. It's not a bad result but Carlisle won't be in the top 7 come the end of the season so we should be looking for all three points regardless of whether it's home or away.

For me, Coulthirst was wasted up front as he struggled to get on the ball and should have played out wide in place of Weston who had a disappointing afternoon with no end product. Coulthirst has shown he can make things happen.

All in all not a great performance one way or another.

An end to end game which either side could have won had both keepers not been on form, and the finishing had been better.

I thought their number 25, Marriott was the pick of the players on the park today and I was surprised when he was subbed.

I am not sure about the long throw tactic. I don't recall one of Leonard's throws being met by one of our players today.

Just like to back up what others are saying, that we do need a new goal scorer. We have made bucket loads of chances against Carlisle and Wimbledon, enough to win both games, but only a point to show for it. Corr has not only started playing deeper, but is also failing to get on the end of things as Weston and Coulthirst are getting past their man but Corr is much slower and is way behind the action, normally meaning that they end up shooting from a silly angle instead of crossing it. I remember Lee Barnard smashing the ball past the goalies so many times the first time he was at Southend, now he seems to be shooting with much less power and trying to place the ball. The goalies are now getting their hands to his shots. Get back to the power shot Lee, if they see it before it's past them then good luck to them. Weston is not very accurate as well, a shame because he has got past so many defenders, he should go for power as well.

Just heard phil brown on talksport...he is disappointed with a point due to missing clear cut chances to win the game.

Spot on. Thought Barney added a bit more pace when he came on - but far too many players passing the ball to another player to shoot just outside the box and no-one taking the initiative to get the shot away.

Well deserved point. Solid performance in the main but no cutting edge once again. BBBC offerred little in the system we played. Weston could have done better from the good positions he put himself in and Bolger nearly cost us a couple of times with some sloppiness. Would like to see Mads and Payne start for Bolger and Coulthirst. They might offer something a bit different. Maybe go 4-4-1-1 away next with Weston playing more central behind BBBC.
