Breaking News Callum Powell joins - now official

Southend United are delighted to confirm the signing of Callum Powell from Kettering Town for an undisclosed fee.

The 26-year-old forward, who celebrates his birthday today, has agreed terms on a two-and-a-half-year deal at Roots Hall.

Powell has been in terrific form for Kettering in the Vanarama National League North, topping the Poppies’ scoring charts with 14 goals in all competitions and adding seven assists too.

And the former Northampton Town, Wrexham, Tamworth and Stourbridge player is excited to be joining and can't wait to get started.

He said: "It’s a massive opportunity and I’m really grateful to Southend for giving me the platform to kick on and show what I’m about.

"Since I spoke to the club, I’ve been really excited about everything that's going on and the project that is happening here.

"I’m going to do everything I can to help the team get to where they want to get to and fulfil my own aspirations and goals as well.

"I’ve worked extremely hard for this opportunity, and I’ve proven myself and scored a lot of goals this season. But that’s not to stop now, that’s for me to kick on again with a great club like Southend and take my journey to a new level, scoring more goals, making more things happen and winning more games.

"I can’t wait to get my teeth into it and I’m looking forward to Saturday and starting this journey as I mean to go on.”

Blues head coach Kevin Maher said: "He was brought to our attention quite early on and another one that we’ve watched a lot of.

"I’m sure he’s going to excite the fans with how he plays. He’s direct, he goes at players and he’s been having a great season at Kettering so we’re delighted to have him on board.

"His numbers have been great this season and speaking to him he’s determined to improve.

"He’s at an absolutely perfect age for us and I think he can come in and contribute straight away.

"We're delighted to have him on board and he adds to the competition we’ve already got in them attacking areas, and something slightly different to what we’ve got.

"I'd like to thank the Chairman, the CEO, everyone involved in the recruiting team and the coaching team too who have all once again played their part in bringing another excellent addition into the squad, and one that I’m sure the fans will take to straight away.”

Welcome, Callum!

Thing that really stands out is just how all these signings see us a big club and a real chance to improve there careers and be a part of something.

Compared to last pay day big time charlies who see us as a little swansong.

Did anyone do any scouting before? Or did PB just pop onto wikipedia to see who had won stuff in the past..

Personally I think the club should pay more attention to how this is going to affect Shrimperzone. Clearly they don't care enough about us. Recently we've had Chris Powell come back as manager and now we've signed Callum Powell. What with the ever present Chris Philips, how on earth are we going to know which CP we're talking about?

Shambles.
Gives me some great ideas for some mugs though.

Just need sticky tape and a felt tip pen.

Ps: I do not know if you are all aware but Callum uses the term "Wiggle it just a little bit" Coincidence eh. ?

Anyone else think we're signing all these players in a rush cos we'll be back under an embargo in a month's time.. :Whistling:

Only kidding (I hope), long may the positivity continue, makes a nice change thats for sure..

ECHOSPORT talks to Jon Dunham, sports reporter at the Northants Telegraph, to find out more about Southend United's latest signing Callum Powell.
How would you describe Callum’s time at Kettering and what moments stick out?

"Callum signed for Kettering last season and there were plenty of signs of what he was capable of, so much so that the club were fairly quick to put him on a contract.
"Obviously, that campaign at Step 2 was cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic but it’s this season where he really flourished.

"Certainly in the first couple of months of the campaign, he was pretty much unplayable at times and scored both goals in an early 2-0 win at Gloucester City.
"I think his best game this season was in the 1-1 draw with AFC Fylde - one of the National League North title favourites - where he ran a very good side ragged.
"His form dipped slightly during a tricky period for Kettering but, just recently he has been flying again with two goals in the recent 3-0 victory over Curzon Ashton.

"He’s scored 14 goals in all competitions this season, an outstanding return."

What kind of forward would you say he is and what can Southend fans expect from him?
"When he first signed, it was primarily as a winger which is where I think he has played most of his career.
"This season, he has played as one of the wide players in a three-pronged attack but also as a striker in a two up front and hasn’t looked out of place at all in that role.
"He’s lightning quick, he has a bag full of tricks and he’s an entertainer.
"When things come off, it delights the crowd and, because of that, he is forgiven when things might not come off the way he intended.
"It’s fair to say his performances have made him a real favourite with the fans at Latimer Park and there’s no reason why that shouldn’t be the same at Roots Hall."

How do you feel he will cope with the step up to the National League?

"It’s probably a bit difficult for me to say, given I haven’t watched a huge amount of National League football this season.
"But I have seen enough from him to suggest it won’t be a problem.
"I firmly believe he’s too good to be at Step 2 and he is a confident lad who will certainly back himself to flourish at the higher level.
"And remember, he’s no stranger to the National League having previously been at Wrexham.
"He knows full well what he is getting himself into and I am sure he will have no fear about showing what he can do."

Looks more like a rugby player. We're going to have a big, physical strikeforce with him, Dalby and Cardwell, which you need at this level.

I've realised that we're finally building a squad that has the types of players I always hated seeing us play against, but at the same time wished that we had in our squad. Well, one by one, we're now acquiring those types of players, and I'm very excited about the future of this club for the first time in bloody years.
