Atkinson, Leonard and Hurst should all be capable of double figures, all technically very good players. Payne also. What we badly lack is a centre back who can really attack the ball at corners and free kicks. Prosser and Bolger seem a bit too lightweight.

Atkinson ? No chance.

Decent player but never going to be scoring lots.

Agree about the others though, and certainly about defenders, no threat at all from corners.

As I said above, the best year with Sturrock we scored a lot and got 83 points, and out top scorer got 12 all season.

So its not just the fact we havent a striker scoring double figures its the total lack of goals throughout the side thats missing, which weve discussed many times.

You are right and we finished that season with over 3 times the amount of goals we have so far scored this term. Had Dickinson not got injured when he did, on 11 goals and missing the last 14 games, I suspect he would have gone on to have got more.

Only Payne and Worrall are on course to get near what they should have been targeting goals wise at the start of the season. To have only 4 league goals shared between Atkinson, Leonard, Hurst, Weston & Timlin is where the problem is in my view.

Indeed, plus we should be hoping for at least 10 goals from defence.

Its because the midfield are living up to their level. Apart from Hurst there is no genuine goalscoring ability among them. They are all good players but too many non-scorers to have in one side and should not have been assembled as such.

You take Ryan Leonard. Some fans seem to think he is the goto guy for a goal if given the chance. Since he has been at the club he has bagged 6 league goals out of 127 shots. Thats 117 efforts that could have been supplied to a striker to do the business but were squandered. How many times have we said the strikers do not get enough supply? Go figure.

We need a striker to do the business at the end of the midfields craft and endeavour because our current midfield is not going to consistently return goals.

Agreed. From the 5 I listed we should be looking for 25 in a season. That's not unrealistic in my view.

Timlin has never got 5 for us in a season nor has Atkinson. Why should they now? Some players have goals in their locker and some don't. Currently we have too many of the latter and so cannot afford to have profligate strikers as well.

We played Weston up front with Corr one game, cant remember if that was home or away to be honest.

Since then we have played 4411 since until Saturday with the diamond. Some would class that 4411 as 442 as with Payne just as a deep forward.

Corr and Barnard at home to Bury. Barnard played better on his own v Exeter despite the miss of e season.

Think with Leonard is he scored those screamers in his early days from right back so its natural to think from midfield he would be getting even more chances, but doesnt seem to have stepped up on that front.

Actually he had 18 shots in either of his first two seasons and then rocketed to 66 shots in the league last term, 78 if you include the cup. But he only managed 2 goals from the 66 league shots. The memory of a couple of good hits seems to blind many fans to the reality that he is very inaccurate. His shots would probably be better served creating chances.

This is added to the problem of our midfielders not being scorers. Whats the most Prosser has in a season? 3. Or Coker, especially White. You are very hard pressed to state with confidence that our defence can score 10 goals between them. PB has a side that has little or no history of scoring goals but people think they should. Scoring defenders are prized and so are midfielders. We have just cobbled together a squad void of goalability. Thats why i call for a better striking option because failing that you need to dismantle and rebuild much of the whole squad. Something i suspect will be done sooner or later anyway.

Wow. With a combined goal tally of 8 in 63 appearances out of Brown's striker signings, might as well have resigned Blair Sturrock for a fraction of the cost in wages ha hah lmao :hilarious:

Goalscorers at this level are few and far between. Sturrock and Tilson signed their fair share of donkeys too. As others have said, we have a lack of goals throughout the whole team. Leonard, Timlin, Hurst and Atkinson have 3 goals between them this season, that's not good enough.

I didn't say 5 each, I said 25 from the 5 midfielders. Atkinson got a 3 in the league last year, Timlin got a couple also. Hurst should be looking for 8 in a season, Weston simillar and Leonard around 5.

The problem is fairly bloomin obvious. In order to score more goals you need to have more players getting forward into attacking positions. All of our players do have the ability to score, but not when the majority of our midfielders seem reluctant to bust a gut to burst into the box and put pressure on the opposition. We look a fabulous team when we attack at pace and have plenty of players surging forward. But this happens all too rarely at Roots Hall these days. Who would have guessed Anthony Grant a few years back would have a scoring purple patch ? this was because he was allowed ( & encouraged ) to rampage into dangerous areas and be on hand to finish off the moves. What we have been fed week after week with barely any exception is Corr ( or Weston ) surrounded by several defenders , the ball banged up to him head height , with our supporting players probably 30 yards away. Little wonder we dont look like scoring.
If we want to WIN home matches , we need to ATTACK in greater numbers. We know Div 2 defenders are prone to mistakes, so lets put them under far more pressure and reap the benefit.

His forwards score from open play on average every 950 minutes(including added time)No wonder it was boring:stunned:
