Brown considers Smith call up

However, that does imply that we have given up on promotion this season. FWIW I don't think we'll make the playoffs, but whilst it's still possible we should put out our strongest team.

Great so we can put Barrett on the bench then?

Not as simple as that though is it, you wouldn't be saying this if he had made a few saves that won us games we have lost since xmas and we were sitting in the top six and went on to go up via the play off's, how much would promotion be worth vs the lower tribunal fee ? These things are always a gamble, in this case it's backfired but credit to PB & RM forgiving it a go.

In this case I don't think it has backfired. We went to Coventry with just 2 points on the board. Bentley had a fantastic game including a penalty save. Anyone who was there will tell you that game was worth more than just one point. We won our next game v Peterborough.

We went to Millwall with a patched up side and again Bentley was MOM, it was the start of a good run, winning 6 from seven. We had achieved the most important target season, not to be near the bottom at the end of October. From then on we had the confidence of knowing relegation was never going to be an issue.

On another thread people have questioned our permanent and loan signings but have forgot that they all did their bit in that vital period. Hunt, Mooney, Rea, when Thompson and Bolger were injured, even Pigott won us some points. They certainly deserve more marks than the 2 or 3 that some have given.

Alternatively you could easily take the view that better quality permanent or loanee signings would have assured the play offs?

That would cost more money, which of course we don't have. You don't seem to understand that Rea, Pigott and Kamara were loaned on the cheap as back up players. They were never brought to Southend to be first choice.

Hunt was injured because he was booted from behind on two occasions. He didn't break down on the pitch or in training but of course it suites your agenda to blame PB. We don't condemn Leonard for being crocked against Col U.

Wordsworth and McLaughlin have had serious injuries and no player at any level has their best season when they have such an injury. Ask Ben Coker.

Overall you have to ask how many clubs have spent less than us but are higher in L1. Burton maybe but no one else. So that means we have used our budget wisely.

Why is that wrong? He has a contract here!

I'm so done with the Bentley charade now. All this coming onto the pitch last to milk a separate round of applause just for yourself, patting the badge on the shirt after the game. If it all means that much to you Dan sign a contract, if not, **** off.

He had a contract, and the club made the decision to think first and foremost about the club. Now he doesn't have a contract, he has the right to think first and foremost about himself. You can't have it both ways.

The trouble is, not selling him has sent out a message to the others that we will hold them back. Had we sold Dan, then maybe Payne would have felt more inclined to sign?

Wow, someone has finally summarised our season rationally, which has been of course a very much positive one.

Great posts Rigsby! 👍🏻

Thank you sir, I know its a forum and we are all entitled to views, however I do feel the moaning and nit pickers are over represented on this forum. I personally have always found a much better attitude amongst the fans in the grounds or the Spread Eagle etc.

I will be with a large group this Saturday, some who post on here now and again. All of them seem very aware that our club has limitations and that will always be reflected on the pitch. All we ask is that the players and staff look committed and have the right attitude towards our club. From that point of view we have no complaints in the last couple of seasons. From where we were about six years ago facing extinction and with 4 players registered we have made some huge strides forward. I only wish people would see the bigger picture at times.

Well said. We as a club could be so much worse off than we are now. As rigsby says, the progress we have made from only a few years ago is massive. I for one would be happy with the fee we would receive from a tribunal and grateful that I got to watch a possible future star of the premier league play for us. Everyone talks about "he should sign on so we get a fee. We gave him his break he should be grateful". But what about what he has done for us. Saved us on numerous times and turned draws and sometimes even losses into wins. People need to wake up and realise that we are a small club who do not really have that much of leverage in terms of bargaining with players (and their agents). Time to let him go and get on with it.

It's a massive mistake in my book. Not just because of the excellent fee offered but primarily because had we sold in the August window we'd have been able to negotiate our own sell-on percentage. We won't be able to do that at a tribunal and in the vast majority of tribunal cases the sell-on % is on the low side and is very rarely above 10%. It's a HUGE error for a player who was never going to sign a new deal, fair enough if that was a possibility but Bentley made it clear he wouldn't re-sign. The extra 15% or so that Ron would have been in a great position to negotiate (as he did with the likes of Hooper etc) will likely cost us a lot of money in the future - and that's without taking into consideration the much lower fee we will now receive too. Some will credit RM and PB for "giving it a go" but in financial terms I'd bet my bottom dollar they 100% regret this decision now - and they should because it was a poor one.

Correct !

Sell on clauses can be the ultimate gold mine, transfer fees, number of appearances, promotion and future international appearances.

If I recall only one club made a bid and we don't know the full details of how that fee was constructed and the fact they never came back after that and instead purchased another keeper, please enlighten me as to how we would have been able to negotiate this amazing sell on clause!!

Bently really ain't that great , he's a pretty good shot stopper but then again so was Flahavan he's pretty hopeless at crosses and his kicking is not the best I've ever seen . Seems to me if we can cash in then let's do it and give Ted Smith a chance that way we can then cash in on him in a few years time , assuming we're not in the prem by then

Agree with this, a good shot stopper, he just does not get in the pack for crosses, you don't have to be a giant, you always have an arms length... Just want a commanding keeper who will get in there, Bently reminds me of Simon Royce, a good shot stopper, but needs to mix in the pack with the crosses, and punch it away.

on the other hand we comfortably stayed up this season and even flirted with the play offs. that may be worth more than selling Bentley and getting another keeper in.
i say well done to the club for putting the football side above the financial side
