Brown considers Smith call up

Evening Echo

The News
SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown has revealed he is considering selecting goalkeeper Ted Smith for the final six games of the League One season.

Is this like when Brown used to come out and say loads of changes would be made, then he would have an unchanged squad for the next game?

I genuinely hope he does give Smith a go because it's pointless playing Bentley now, nothing to play for and his heart is set on leaving.

Bentley won't be happy but not a great deal he can do if he is running his contract down eh, we must start planning for next season:thumbsup:

On Bentley's performances this season, one would hope young Ted will be an improvement-even now.

Who cares if he isn't happy; any genuine fan won't be happy with his stance on a new contract

And I don't begrudge him moving on, but if he's good enough, he'll be signed whether in or out of contract; so sign up and earn the club some money for taking a chance on you, after all it's not as if we don't need it!!

Do we actually know Bentley's stance on a new contract or it is just chinese whipsers at the moment?

Why do you dislike Brown so much? Not having a pop, genuinely interested as I was someone who was really unhappy about how Sturrock was treated and actively disliked what I saw of Brown at other clubs but has come to see him as a success for us.

Changing the keeper is something you DO rather than something you TALK ABOUT in the media. Not sure what Phil hopes to gain other than column inches with his photo next to them.

Anyone see the comment on the Echo page, I guess that it does cut both ways:

"gary 51 6:58pm Wed 6 Apr 16 There is uncertainty about our manager in the summer, perhaps we should have a new manager on the touchline for the last 6 games"

Ron Martin has considered dropping PB for the last six games and brining in Graham Coughlan. Best to find out whether he's up to it.:winking:

I agree with this. Was disappointed when both "Tilly" and "Luggy" were let go and the way they were both treated in the end. As punters we are no privy to the "Ins & Outs" of the running of the clubs and the true challenges any Southend manager faces on a day to day basis. So, we can only judge them on their leadership and accomplishments from when they took over, the duration and when they leave. Tilly, Luggy and Brown must all go down as successful SUFC managers.

What are your talking about? It is Chinese whispers that he won't sign a new contract? What is Bentley's stance?

I remember someone saying a while back when it was mentioned he may sign, his dad commented laughing it off.

Doesn't sound like Phil,s going anywhere from that statement,

TBH at the moment it is more likely he stays than goes. The bookies (who tend to be right more often than wrong- it's life or death to them) have him going now as evens at best. Rightly in my view he wants to finish strongly- even if not for the playoffs winning or losing is a habit that can follow into the next season. On Ted its a tough one- he wants to know if Ted could be a replacement. As to Dan well if you make a big point of not wanting to commit could he really complain if the alternative was tested as a precaution? Not if he is reasonable- and I would hope that his agent and others would calm him on the subject. For Dan I still think he will either go to a big club on a big contract (75%) or will stay on a very much improved contract but with a clear release clause that keeps both parties happy (25%).

How about his quote in the Echo at the start of the season, that wasn't Chinese whispers - that's what I'm talking about!!

At the start of the season. Is there any possibility that could have been paper talk or that things may have changed in the last 8 or so months? If what Ricey says is correct, then maybe there is legs in Dan not signing, though a bit poor for Bentleys dad to laugh off any suggestion of Dan signing a new contract. Anyhow, its up to Dan if he wants to sign or not. Anyone should have the option to better themselves and if Dan decides not to sign a new contract then good luck to him
