Post-Match Thread and Ratings Boston 3-0 Southend United

Was annoyed last night and still annoyed. It was all pretty embarrassing. Decent first half but still didn’t look close to scoring. Second half was just absolutely dire. It was like we’d just come out second half expecting more of the same and expecting we’d eventually grab a goal as the superior team. They scored and it was panic stations.

For all the fantastic one off saves he makes, there’s a big question mark over Hayes for me and it will be good to get Collin back. Goodliffe isn’t the answer and should go back to Col Ewe in the summer. The midfield has the makings of being really decent, but upfront is where we’re severely lacking at the moment.

Hopper and Bonne both work hard but don’t score anywhere close to enough. You can imagine players like Macauley Langstaff and Ollie Pearce doing really well playing next to Hopper or Bonne, but they don’t look like they’re actually going to score the goals themselves.

It’s a real worry that we’ve got Hopper and Kendall contracted for next season who for all their hard work, don’t look like scoring anywhere near enough, and Walker who I just don’t think is up to it. In desperate need of a striker who can actually score.

I don’t think we need to panic. The playoffs were a nice dream but realistically we’d only put ourselves into contention given our recent good form. Boston have been in top 4 form of late so not necessarily the no hopers the table will have you believe. We really need to recruit strongly in the summer though. Some big decisions to be made.

It should be obvious by now that the same pattern keeps repeating itself, season after season. Decent unbeaten run, although comprising too many draws, but as a result flirting with a chance of the play offs, then a reality check just on the brink of really getting into the mix. It will be the same next season. The current coaching staff have repeatedly shown their limitations. How much more evidence is needed? COSU need to take a long hard look at the situation and act promptly.
Sot on! Recruitment generally has been average to say the least.

Dont know whats happened to Husin. Seems a shell of the man we have seen in the past who could control and dominate a midfield

Mostly anonymous in games these days but Kevs still a big fan. Its like watching Brown playing some of his old mat
Wheres all that flare and energy gone that I so admired in Husin seems far less fire in the belly? Perhaps it will turn up more when facing the need for a contract in a years time
Both Noor and Cav have had injuries that they've struggled to come back fully from. That first season they were with us, they were an incredible force in the midfield. They've both got older too, of course.

A painful watch last night. Hopefully just a blip. Win needed against Oldham without doubt required. Everyone else seems to be doing as a favour too. Are we good enough?

Why does the this place go into meltdown every time we lose a game ? Get real, teams lose matches. We are going to have a problem defending. Gubbins isn't a left back, Goodliffe isn't good enough and Hayes is just a back up to Collin and not in the same League. Morton can't do Miley's job and needs to play further forward. Add all that up and last night was a disaster waiting to happen. Enough said.

A part time team, in the bottom 4 regardless of their current form and getting spanked 3-0 by them.

People are entitled to be a bit ****ed off!

Ok we played crap last night And got rolled over by an in form side . But before we hit the panic button .Did any he play off doubters look at Rochdale score they got tonked 4 0 at home last night So does that make them a poor side as well These things happen in football .

I don't think it's about losing one game. That happens. It's the manner of the loss and the pattern of poor performances against the lower clubs, the fact we can't score more than two, can't keep a clean sheet, can't win more than two on the trot, can't defend a set piece, can't score from a set piece and can't go into any game with any real confidence. Training ground and motivational stuff.

They are near the top of the form table. They will be full time next season, regardless of which League they will be playing in. In their recent games, they have drawn with Barnet, beaten York and Rochdale and now us. They have a full time manager and I daresay some of their players are already full time.

You have summed up this squad perfectly

Surprised at Goodliffe too be honest. Know he's been in and out, but when we signed him, came with a lot of good wishes from Col U fans and sounded like something we needed.

Wonder how much of it is an attitude problem when players end up in the NL.

AND.... for those who think we're somehow entitled to win against Boston because we're a much bigger club
This part of your very good post (yes, I thought of the Aldershot floodlights, too!) reminds me of 1st January 1992 when we comprehensively beat Newcastle United 4-0 at Roots Hall to leave us, temporarily, top of what would now be called the Championship. As I was leaving the ground, a couple of Newcastle supporters behind me were mouthing off that the likes of Southend shouldn't even be allowed to play in the same league as their great club. I turned round and reminded them that past glory doesn't earn you the right to win games over less illustrious opponents.

Southend were so on top 1st Half (a bit like Eastleigh, but without the goals) that it was almost criminal to go in 0-0. What was said at HT? Well I guess GC had a go at his players and made some changes, KM probably said 'more of the same please'. Boston certainly started the half better but the goal was a wonder strike and changed the game, suddenly they had the belief that they could get more and win, there was no sign of shutting up shop and we were the ones that looked clueless. Maybe it was time for a change, but KM kept faith and before you knew it, it was 2-0 with a soft goal to concede all round. I understand why KM wants Hopper in his side, he negated their long throw threat in 1st half, he was our best defender! Husin was fairly anonymous although did have a shot on target in 1st half. I was crying out for Kendall to come on in his place, but to be fair when he did eventually get on, I can't remember him being involved much? Walker, despite what others have said, I thought looked quite lively, got a great cross in and had a goal disallowed?

The crime I mentioned in the 1st half? That was the standard of crossing, all the slick build up play, all the possession counts for nothing if you cannot deliver a decent cross. I don't know how many corners we had or free kicks, but they too came to nothing. KAF was my MOTM followed closely by LCP.

At the end of the day we are a non league team with non league standard players, who perform to a non league standard and make non league mistakes. We need to be realistic in just who we are going to recruit.

Yes it seems to be a factor , but I thought Noor was over that by now. Hes actually knocked up 35 appearances in the past year and scored once and I dont recall a single MOM award sadly

Now played close to 140 games for us and at least was averaging closer to 5 goals a season

Cheer up people, we have consistency and that is comforting. We know what league we will be in next season and we know what manager we will have. We know we will underperform, flatter to deceive and raise hopes and expectations beyond reality. We can probably count on being in this league for another five seasons and that will be coupled with a series of spiritless first round cup exits. I expect winning consistently must get very boring and who would want that?
