Looking at his stats, he played 39 games for Bury last season in League 2. Bury only conceeded 50 goals in the league which is just over 1 per game, and they kept 16 clean sheets so he cant be that bad.

Looking at his stats last season, as a League 2 player, he played 41 games in total, kept 15 clean sheets and conceded 44 goals, an average of 1.07 goals per match.

This season, as a League 1 player, he has played 27 games in all competitions, kept only 4 clean sheets and conceded 49 goals, an average of 1.81 goals per match. This includes a 2-0 defeat at home to our next opponents Crawley, in the First Round of the FA Cup.

Paul Clark made Belford his Man of the match today, even tho there was plenty of good shouts for other players.
If you didn't go or listen to the match, he basically saved everything that was fired at him, with no mistakes, and he palmed shots away into safe area's, away from incoming opposition players.
So all in all, a great debut that helped Southend to the much needed win, without us having to chase a game by going a goal or two down.

Give him a chance guys, jeez.

Second all of that. Belford did well today.

That's the first clean sheet we've kept away from home in the League since the end of October.

What was Sturrock thinking? Why didn't he play Bentley?!

:tease:

Bit of a knee jerk reaction, I think, earlier especially as we kind of expected that Dan Bentley would play. Seems to have done well today, let's hope he can do so on Monday. I guess its in his best interest to prove that shorter goalies can be good - still find it odd there's a 7" range on estimates of his height!!!

I have been out all day and got score updates via the net this afternoon and get home to read the pathetic posts from people who judged this guy from info sourced from the net saying he was a crap, short-assed dwarf and fearing for our future. If ever there a case for individuals to post retractions and apologies to the keeper it is now.

I just hope he never joins the Zone and reads the tripe posted about him.

I think the comments on this thread regarding a guy who had not even made his debut for the club represents a new low even for this website.

Absolutely. This thread is unbelievable. So glad I went to the game today instead of staying at home and reading all that rubbish. The guy did the business for us today. Looked confident, made saves, caught crosses .... and he can boot the ball a fair distance too. Pretty talkative as well.

Just read this. Some amazing posts. 13 games to go and people would rather throw in a kid who's played 20 mins and was as nervous as you like, ahead of a keeper who gained promotion from this league last season.

Bentley is obviously work in progress, and if he improves his time will come. You don't see too many 18 year olds in clubs first teams. For now, lets back the new boy
